I thought I had a great strategy here - Picking up islands, great halls, bazaars and a festival or two, then transition into Vineyards. The Island+Great Hall+Vineyards means I could pick up a ton of VP, and keep my deck flowing.

It seemed to work, but my opponent just flew through the Provinces- picking up 8 in just 20 turns. His only support was money, Navigator and Festival (and an Inn at the end).

I know Navigator is under-valued, but this seems a little ridiculous.

What am I missing here?

He does do a cute play at the end for the last Province, though.

He got 4 Provinces in 14 Turns, pretty much right on par with Smithy/BM.  At this point, any Festivals were merely expensive Silvers so his strategy was Navigator/BM.  I would guess that this is a bit slower than Smithy/BM so at that point, he's getting good draws.  He used the discard portion of Navigator only 2/6 times on Turn 5 and 17.  So yeah, he did get good draws in able to drain the last 4 provinces in 6 turns after picking up a substantial amount of green.  But in general, I don't think you would have that many turns left.  Since he wasn't picking up Duchies, I'd say in most games Navigator could empty the Provinces within 22 Turns easy.

So it looks like I should have gone vineyards a little earlier. Combind with a little bad luck.

I know we talk a lot about x turns to 4 provinces or 5 provinces with different strategies. I would love to see done benchmarks for time to 8 provinces. It would give a good idea how long one has when going for an alt vp strategy that leaves all the provinces to the other guy.

Has this been done somewhere?

When I had a simulator, I had it for some cards.

You can do it with Geronimoo's simulator. Set up buy rules to always buy provinces and no other VP, set up a dummy opponent that buys nothing.

Pure big money unoptimized (buy province, otherwise, gold, otherwise silver, otherwise nothing) takes an average of 26 turns.
