In b4 "depends on the kingdom"... what's the general consensus as to which to go for? My instinct says that most of the time you prefer Witch... obviously if you open 5/2 it should be no contest, but otherwise, should you pick up a Potion in your opening, or grab things that will help you get to $5 quicker?

Witch, IMO. Lower-risk, for one; drawing 2p is much more likely and much more damaging than drawing $4, $4 and not getting a witch. Also, the Potion is as bad as a curse for the purpose of buying provinces. And, +2 cards is better than +1 card/+1 action, again for the purposes of buying things.

Oh, and Witch gives faster cycling to find your Witch faster (+2 vs +1 card).

Yeah, this question was prompted by a game I just played. Golem was also available, so I opened Potion. Ironically, I hit $4P the first time through, but of course took Familiar over Golem. I actually ended up picking up a Witch pretty soon after that, my 2 Golems were playing the Familiars and Witch quite frequently. My opponent actually picked up Familiar as well, after getting Witch (he opened Feast). I won the Curse split 6-4.

I think the only thing that would make me take Familiar over Witch would be the presence of Scrying Pool.

Edit: and good enough support too, probably +Buy and passable trashing.

I think the sims have already shown that Witch is better, Geronimoo has posted something about this already.

I think if transmute is the absolute only trasher on the board, it might be worth going familiar over witch. In this situation you're basically gambling: you will definitely lose the game if you get don't get a familiar on the first shuffle and your opponent gets a witch, but if you do get the familiar you will be in very good shape once you pick up a transmute on the next shuffle.
