Ok so this isn't meant to be just about running, but I wanted to tip the hat to Ozle's topic about walking.

I'm a track athlete (or was until this past year) who specializes in sprinting and hurdles. I'm super in love with the sport even though I'm not really that great. I'm still in college so I may pick it up again, we'll see.

Any other current/past athletes out there?

Well, as I mentioned in Ozle's thread, I'm a triathlete. I most enjoy swimming, and have plans to do MIMS (Manhattan Island Marathon Swim) in the next year or two.

I'm also a member of RUSA (www.rusa.org) which is ultra long distance, unsupported cycling. I've been taking my rides light this season though, and instead been focusing on my swimming and running.

And I hate running. I just don't get much enjoyment from it. I dunno. But it's required for Tri's, so I put in the work.

Triathletes kind of amaze me. So, yeah, congrats on that. It combines 3 things I'm pretty bad at. I'm fast but I have NO endurance. Like even in high school I was a great track athlete but a terrible XC athlete, but oh well track's my sport anyway.

But because of that lack-of-endurance I'm totally with you that running is not really my thing. I run sometimes and obviously run in training, but I just don't enjoy it much, and definitely not as much as the running-is-life people (who are usually great people!!). What I really really love out of track is the competition, against fellow racers and against myself. If I get back into track one of the prime motivating factors for me will be that I'm just not at all satisfied with my PRs and I don't want to end my career without my times reflecting my absolute best. So yeah, fiercely competitive over here. Translates nicely to gaming, though, I'd say. ;D

I'm a runner. I ran Track and Cross Country in high school--2002-2006? Not so long ago, I suppose--and continued to run for leisure during college and now. I also coached middle school Track for years.

So, yeah, I love running. I was best at the 400 and 800 meter dash, and I was decent at the 5K for Cross Country (my senior year, anyway).

Middle distance is often considered one of the toughest categories in track and I can't disagree. I sure am not cut out for the 800. 400 is even pushing it for me although I did run it sometimes. 400 hurdles is considered one of the other toughest events and, yeah, I did that last year. Ugh.

I see no problem with that

im not aiming at WINNING the London marathon, much as I wouldnt expect to beat WW after a weeks worth of Dominion.

Obviously will take some consideration and effort, but 8 months training should be more than enough to finish a marathon.

Your last point is actually a really really good one. I too find that my head is completely clear and able to do it's best thinking when I'm training. For me, swimming especially. Being in the water, with nothing to focus on, allowing the body to take control of the natural rhythm and movement; no sounds, no talking... Nothing. Just me and my thoughts.  It's just relaxing, and a really good opportunity to think while the mind is void of anything to bog it down.

Long distance runner.

I do about a marathon a year (this year it's Chicago in October)

In 2009 I committed 5 months to training and did the Lake Placid Ironman.

I tend to do things "all in", hense the ridiculous number of Dominion games I've played since March...

It's not nearly as daunting as it seems!

Really, get in at the Sprint levels. They are very non-competitive and are GREAT for first timers and old stalwarts alike. And I mean that quite literally; I see people in the 70+ age bracket on a regular basis! The events can range from 200-400 meter swims, 10-15 miles on bike, and usually 5k (3.1 miles) runs. Nothing extreme at all, and absolutely the most enjoyable atmosphere around. The people are so supportive and just want to see everybody there succeed. And once you do your first, you're hooked!

www.totalimmersion.net/ - Best swimming instruction I've ever gotten
www.rusa.org/ - Not exactly the best for training, but I havn't really found something for cycling like running/swimming. There's still lots of good information here.
www.chirunning.com/ - It goes contrary to anything that's taught on a track, so if you're used to running track this likely won't work for you. But it's designed for taking people from no experience to long distance in an injury free and enjoyable way.

But I really do encourage everybody I meet to get involved in the sport. It SOUNDS daunting, but it really really really isn't. It's just FUN.

Oh yeah I don't mean to say you can't do it! I just mean that it's something that's so intimidating to me I can hardly envision it. A marathon is nearly 20 miles longer than I've ever run before, but a lot of people can manage it just fine.

You can pretty easily go from being about to run 5km to running a marathon in about 4-5 months (training less than 6h/week). Anyone feel free to pm me if you need a training program.

If you watch the Lake Placid 2009 show (and promo video), I'm in it.
In the swim part they do a close up of three swimmers swimming in parallel right next to each other. I'm one of those three. Imminidatelt after they cut away I run into on of the other two guys and it doesn't look nearly so smooth...

oy. not sure i'd go quite that far. but it is doable. the amount of training you need is heavily dependent on how much time and ability you have, how much of a base you have coming into training, and how fast you would want to finish the marathon.

On a note on the running, people ran off at the start of the Jersey walk I did! The show offs.

First person to finish the 48.2 miles did so in 7 hours 53 minutes apparently. Not bad considering most of it was hilly coastal paths!

I'm a runner myself!  Ran CC and Track in college and unfortunately due to Ill-Gotten Injuries (IGI), never ran to my full potential.  But I'm finally feeling healthy again and plan on racing some 5K's in the Ann Arbor area later this summer and fall.  Perhaps I'll throw in a marathon sometime as well, but no plans for that as of right now.

I'm a runner myself!  Ran CC and Track in college and unfortunately due to Ill-Gotten Injuries (IGI), never ran to my full potential.  But I'm finally feeling healthy again and plan on racing some 5K's in the Ann Arbor area later this summer and fall.  Perhaps I'll throw in a marathon sometime as well, but no plans for that as of right now.

I should of known, you looked like a runner! Maybe I'll do an Ann Arbor 5K, too...

I am a sprinter and jumper. I just finished high school and don't really intend on doing it again. I got more into mid-distance this year, but my love is the triple jump. I'd be curious to here about PR's from DSell and Robz888 (and anyone else who did 1600 and below and/or jumps and/or hurdles). I started it to stay in shape for basketball, and hate training, but sickly enjoy the competition of an 800.

Other thread notes: I'm a mathlete, too! Four years at ARML, only one year of qualifying for AIME (should have been at least two). Two years back, my team was one stupid counting error (that I made on a team-round question) from winning the B-Division, so we ended up at 7th.

My soccer coach did an Ironman. He and his son and his mother did a mini-triathlon (the pup is afraid to swim outside of a pool) together, which I think is pretty neat.

Oh, and my PR's:
2:03.8 800m (hand-timed split of a 4x800m)
41'4" triple jump (that could easily be broken, I think I am more of a low-mid 42' jumper, at least)
No other PR's worth sharing.

Well, you have me beat in the 800m! I think my best was 2:05. My best 400m was 53. And my best 5K was 16:54. I think those are my only good times.

It's funny, my best in high school was a 52.6 relay split (I never really run straight 400s) but then in a time trial in college during fall training I pop off a PR. Unexpected. The rest of the spring season, though, was... >.>

Oh, I ran a 60 once and I think I got 7.25.

Yeah, I mean, I couldn't catch you in the 1 or the 2. No chance. Maybe if I had a good day, I'd break 24 for the 200. The 400 is a different question altogether, but I never really had the chance to run one when I was in good shape at the end of the season. It's funny how it worked out, I started off doing mostly 200's, and then skipped the 400's to all of a sudden run mostly 800's by the end of the year. Funny enough, I've only run a handful of them (maybe 5), yet it's already my best (running) event.

Sweet, so my time is actually about -3 seconds! (I was so good I even managed to hit the other players hurdles!)

You didn't know? The time you receive is actually [The time you ran] - [.5*Hurdles hit].

Sweet, so my time is actually about -3 seconds! (I was so good I even managed to hit the other players hurdles!)

I'll be running a 10k over in Santa Cruz this weekend (Sunday). Normally that wouldn't be terribly exciting or noteworthy, but there are more than 15,000 runners, which is a massive number for an event this size.

Really looking forward to it. ;D

Just finished this:

I've got to say, running 6 miles with 15,000 people was a blast. There were no waves, just a mass start. There were some people seeded for world class runners (~25 minute range) but the rest of us got to run, weave, dodge, and dance our way through the massive field.

It really was a joy, even if PR's weren't really an option (dropped about 10 minutes moving through traffic).

Just got home from running a Marathon. 3:55. /psyched

I'm exhausted, I hurt, I need a beer (or many), pain killers, more beer, a blanket, and nap. Good times.

I just finished my first marathon in 3:51.

Oh wait that was 2001. Since then i got a job, a wife, two kids and +15kg. So i'm out of this game. Loved runnig, back then.

yay runners! I being a younger sibling followed my brother into track in grade school but had a much greater passion for soccer(better at it too) I dropped soccer in high school in favor of the more intellectual and friendly cross country team. My times were no where that of my brothers but I managed to match him as a captain of both teams. I think my 800 time might have been around his it was my best race. After high school I stopped running as much but stayed as close to the sport as possible. My roommate freshman year trained and ran a marathon, my roommate sophomore year was a triathlete(on our college team and very good, I'll have to ask him some times), and this past year I lived with a former teammate who runs cross country and track for MSU. I live with my girlfriend now and were training to run a half marathon in the summer, its been a long while since I ran for a purpose and I am looking forward to it. Oh during college I have picked up ultimate frisbee and play it as frequently as possible, so I'm not a total lazy bum. I've always wanted to try a triathalon(sprint) but am a horrendous swimmer and have no bike :(

Without pushing us too far into RSP, I have been thinking a lot about my running days and my runner friends in light of the Boston Marathon bombing. The running community is pretty close-knit so my heart really went out to them.

I have been missing track since the season is upon us. I am still in college and could still be out there on the team, but the nature of the program here and some of my other involvement make it unlikely that I'll rejoin. :-\

I injured my knee two months ago, and have been unable to run ever since. It's very jarring. I ran several miles roughly every other day for the last 10 years. I've realized recently that not running is taking a huge toll on my emotional and mental well being. I need the thinking time that running provides.

This has also been on my mind. Of course it would be just as sad if some other group of people had been attacked, but I can't help but think about how exciting it is to cross the finish line and accomplish something like that... and then to see or be apart of what was happening yesterday. Just horrible.

No and no. I mean, I can do stuff, it just causes my knee to feel a lot worse. I mean, even walking on it makes it feel worse. It doesn't really hurt as long as I'm not using it. I just think it's like the world's worst case of tendinitis, but it's not getting better. Anyway, I'm getting an MRI next week.

Sounds rough. :-\ I hope you're able to get that figured out and get back running soon. Tendinitis can be a real pain.

Have you considered picking up biking?  Serious road biking is a really great alternative to running.  When I had a stress fracture a couple summers ago I spend most of my usual running time biking instead.  Emotionally, it does the same thing as running and it has the added bonus that you can get more variety into routes because you can go farther.  The downsides though are that you need the gear, a convenient location and it's a longer time commitment to get the same physical exertion.
