I've been playing a lot over the last few days, mostly to get my level to something that represents my actual skill, instead of my activity on Iso. Went from 21 on Tuesday to 23 Wednesday, 27 Thursday, 29 Today. I think I'll stop there, although the 30 barrier is tempting. I have a higher mean skill than most level 30's, so...

As the thread says, I did it.  For me it was making it up to level 40 and into the top 50 (I'm 40.070 and 48th on the board). 

I've been trying pretty hard to get this for the last few weeks.  I've played ~700 games this month which is way above my usual.  Its been really addictive as well, with the impending threat of iso going down, I didn't want to stop till i got this.

Trying to get to a new skill level makes playing really exciting, but it also feels stressful.  I have had to try pretty hard not to rage when you lose to a worse strategy that gets lucky.

It's because the formula to determine start player uses reverse alphabet sort as a tiebreaker, because Doug Z was bitter from always being last in line in elementary school.

I'm both baffled and amused with my level as of late.

Before two weeks ago, my peak level was 25. I knew with consistent play I could get much higher, because I had crazy uncertainty, and well my skill was about 38, so getting that to about 38+/- 8, maybe I could just about hit 30.

Well now my level is 34, 48.225 ± 13.852, and I'm actually in the top 200 on the leaderboard (precisely, in fact). I mean, my mean skill has gone up by 10, which personally I find crazy. I would have been about 30 seeds higher in the tournament with my current level. I don't even think I'm that great at Dominion, so how I've managed this amuses and baffles me.

I had a similar experience one time before. I was around level 34/35, then inexplicably went up to level 38/39. Then dropped back down.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like a lot of level maintenance is in not doing stupid things like buying random terminals in a Big Money game for no reason.

So, nothing huge and super noteworthy, but I think that for the first time, my uncertainty is lower than my level.
I suppose the main take-away message is that I need to play more Dominion!

It's been quite the journey, from when I was undefeated, to when I hit level 30, to when I choked away a 3-0 lead in this year's Dominion Strategy Championships.

When I was a noob I always thought I would have some grand epiphany about how to play better, and that the very tip-top players (how I viewed level 15 and up when I started), were ninja masters.....but instead it's just been boring gradual improvements with experience and I now recognize that only WW, Bonogi, -Stef-, and Rabid are unbeatable genius machines.

Anyway, now that I've hit 40 I think I'm going to take a long break, although I've said that many times before.

Thanks to all the usuals for the vast amount of free entertainment and surprisingly positive internet community, (theory, rrenaud, new CR folks, DougZ, DXV) and the iso Youtubers who undoubtedly helped my play (WW, jonts, jsh, lespeutere, michaeljb, RobZ, olneyce et al).

When I was a noob I always thought I would have some grand epiphany about how to play better, and that the very tip-top players (how I viewed level 15 and up when I started), were ninja masters.....but instead it's just been boringsubtle gradual improvements with experience and I now recognize that only WW, Bonogi, -Stef-, and Rabid are unbeatable genius machines.

Were the improvements really boring???  I agree it's gradual as I used to face obi wan with trepidation but now when I face him I am confident in my ability to win.  These players are only "unbeatable geniuses" if you believe them to be it.  Part of my joy in Dominion has come from advancing to a level of play where I am confident in my ability to win against any opponent.

I did not start my dominion playing like that and it is only recently that I have obtained that level of confidence.  There are many lessons I've learned throughout my dominion career, one from obi wan is the importance of recognizing how to play a board right from the start.  He once trounced me in a Colony/Mountebank game by investing in a Potion for PS.  Stef has recently beaten me where he built an engine that could Duchy dance while mine couldn't.  And I've also found uses for cards myself like using Scheme for both engine games and slogfest games.  I've always had a special place in my heart for Cartographer which is an often underused and underrated card. 

While improvements have been gradual, I hardly see them as boring.  I have invested countless hours into this game which I would not have invested had improving at this game been "boring".  The fact that each new kingdom provides an opportunity to learn is a unique and exciting prospect for someone who has played over 3800 games.  It's a testament to the excitement Dominion offers that I still and will continue to play this game.

I just reached level 43, which is the highest I have ever been on the leaderboard. I was previously a level 42 back in August, but stopped playing for a few weeks when I thought Iso was going away.

I am so surprised--and thankful!--that Iso is still around, and I am actually playing better Dominion than ever before.
