Dominion General Discussion / Why does luck in Dominion feel streaky?
« on: June 30, 2015, 07:26:35 pm »
I just had a very demoralizing day of Dominion, including having shuffle luck that ranged from below average to comically horrible in about three-quarters of the games I played.  It's frustrating.  And just a few days ago, I beat Marin three times in a row, in large part due to luck (because really, how else would I have pulled that off?  I'm not that good).

And I was just thinking, luck (both good and bad) in Dominion always feels to me like it comes in bunches, and that I have good days and bad days.  After the first 2-3 games I play in a session, if I keep playing it always seems like the luck, good or bad, generally continues for the remainder of the day, only changing the next day, or maybe after I take an extended break.

I know enough about statistics to know that there's no possible way this could actually be true.  But a lot of people I've chatted with while playing say that it seems the same way to them too, that their perception is always that luck seems to come in streaks, and does not seem to follow what you'd expect to be a normal distribution pattern.

Do you feel the same way?  And, why is this true?  What is it about our perception that tricks us into thinking that there's discernible patterns to shuffle luck?

Game Reports / Is Counterfeit/- a better opening than Cultist/- here?
« on: June 30, 2015, 02:50:09 pm »

My opponent and I were talking about this game after I resigned and he suggested that Counterfeit might have been a better opener than Cultist, as you can trash faster, which will help you line up Urchins, so you can catch up to the Urchin/Urchin opening.

I thought the cycling of Cultist plus Cultist being able to potentially activate an Urchin was more important.  But as my opponent astutely pointed out, a Cutlist/- opening gives you a strong chance of setting yourself up with a bad shuffle.

Thoughts?

Great minds think alike: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=13454.0

As I said, starving to death is the official ruling.  I had to resign or face my demise!

I had a similar (but more interesting) game with Monsieur X about a week ago, the log seems to have never been recorded or whatever.  But that game had Governor, Spice Merchant and Possession (and no +actions) and was also really degenerate because of how Possession totally warps how Governor's "penalties" play out.  I got to a point where I couldn't gain any Golds because I was just going to get Possessed the next turn anyway, because we could both use Governor's draw with impunity to be sure to play Possession every turn no matter what (we had both thinned with Spice Merchants enough to do that easily).  I really wish I had the log because I feel like I'm not describing it well, but it was such a yucky game.

That game and this game I just played with Jeebus are like perfect distillations of what's wrong with Possession.

I'm looking for a log of a game I played yesterday with Monsieur X, I can't find it.  The game was played during the log search downtime, does that means the log is pretty much lost?

Is Butcher of all things really such a strong Big Money enabler?

Yes.  Especially when you can open Butcher/- like your opponent did.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards you hate!
« on: June 03, 2015, 07:12:38 pm »
I'm not entirely sure I get all this fear of Cultist, though.  Maybe we're playing it wrong or there has been some *serious* long-tail probability weirdness involving it just so happening to always show up with its strong counters, but I'm pretty sure that the last five or six games we've had including Cultists have been won by the person who got zero/fewer of them.  It's starting to get a serious aura of "trap card" on our table.

It might not be fear so much as just hate.  I can't really explain your experience because my experience has been very different.  Maybe it is a weird coincidence that you keep getting boards where Cultist is weak(er), I don't know.  But the issue is, Cultist tends to push you towards simpler strategies because when Cultist is on the board, way too often the best strategy seems to be to open double-Silver, go for a bunch of Cultists, then shift to buying just VP and money (maybe more Cultists at exactly $5) at the opportune time.  If you don't contest Cultists you'll have 10 Ruins in your deck before you can say Jack Robinson, and good luck digging yourself out from under that pile and then beating what is effectively a Lab-BM deck, which can get to half the standard VP reasonably quickly.  It's sort of similar to Rebuild in that sense (cf. JW's post).

I think this forum and videos made by good players are the best sources of information.  But I'd also suggest asking your opponents questions about the game after it's over.  When I was first playing I did that a lot and while some people would just leave the game right away, I did find a lot of people to be pretty helpful.

I'm just really looking forward to gaining Nobles with Ironworks, that's going to feel good.

EDIT: other effects off the top of my head:
- set aside a $5 or $6 card with Prince without the need for Black Market/Quarry chicanery.
- make Peddler free with just 3+ actions in play.
- create "shortcuts" for Remodel-type cards (hey look, I just Upgraded an Estate into a Margrave)

Can you Inherit an empty pile?  It doesn't have an "if you do" clause about setting the card aside, but then again, you're not placing the token on the pile, you're placing it on the set-aside card, so I'm guessing you can't.

Am I the only one that saw the card art and immediately thought of Golden Axe?

Makes me think of the guy in the lower left here:

Dominion Articles / Re: 2 player games versus 4 player games
« on: April 03, 2015, 01:59:17 pm »
Everything Stef just said.  Another thing to bear in mind is that with 4 or more players, there are only 3 Provinces (or Colonies) per player, which greatly shortens the game.  So, in 4P you should generally start greening earlier than in 2P or 3P.

Also in 4P the metagame around cards that are powerful, but are only powerful if you get a lot of them (Fool's Gold and Minion particularly), is very different.  If you try to go for such a card, you have to have a plan B: if more than one of your opponents goes for the same pile, you're just not going to be able to get that many of the cards and you'll have to adjust your strategy accordingly.

Lastly, if you don't want your play group to all start hating each other, I would suggest always have a defense of some kind if Torturer is in the kingdom.  Without a good defense, that attack makes for a game of unending agony.  In my opinion at least.

I wonder how the selection of Events will be implemented online.  I mean, will the total number of Events in the game be fully random, or will it have a default limit?

68
Well, he answered half of my question.

I also just realized that the on-gain penalty is pretty brilliant: you can use a discard attack to counter the effect but if you're able to gain a Lost City in your action phase with a discard attack in hand and at least one action to spare, your deck is probably already doing what Lost City does, and the benefit of gaining it will be more marginal.

I'm disappointed the art isn't an upside down cardboard box.

That was Donald's prototype art.
So if you rotate Transmogrify 90 degrees then it becomes Duplicate?

I know this has basically zero chance of happening, but having the option to play with a text-only interface like you could on Isotropic would be fantastic.

If you're going to buy a duchy for 6 coins anyway, why not take the border village as well if it improves your deck?
If it's the last Border Village and there are two other empty piles and you're down by more than 3 VP.

Someone had to edge-case it, right?

Help! / Bad play or just a really awful draw?

I win the Stables split and keep it to just one HT, since there's no villages.  My opponent gets a second HT and a Bishop, which both seem like a waste to me, because you really want to use your one terminal slot for +buy right?  Am I wrong, or was I completely screwed by my draw on T15?  Little of both maybe?

My only other thought at this point is, maybe my Bank/Gold buy should have been Province/Mystic instead?

EDIT: I also just thought that maybe two terminals is reasonable, because I knew I wouldn't draw my deck reliably.

Goons: virtually never skippable. Only question is engine or Goons/money.

Ironworks: premier Workshop variant.  Pair with cost reduction for fun times!
