Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Dominion moments 2013

I don't track points either. I just play the game and find out at the end if I won or lost.

I mean, I'll do my best to track points, and I'm almost always know who has how many Provinces... but certainly it's non-trivial to track points so well that you always know if a move would cause you to lose by 1 point... if it were, there would be no point counter extensions, no debate about whether it's legal to take notes, etc.

Why not add a Sea Hag clause?

Innkeeper
Action/Attack - $4
+$2
Each other player discards the top card of his deck. Then he gains a Lodging from the Lodging pile and puts it on top of his deck.

I like the idea to give out bad cards that are not part of the supply. Also, very nice to counter with Watchtower, Jack or Library. Maybe Lodging should give +1 Card or make you discard only one, though, as it's much worse than Militia right now. Then and Innkeeper should probably give a better Vanilla Bonus (like +2$, +1 Buy) to make up for it.

Innkeeper that gives +2$, +1 buy is a way way better Woodcutter that just costs $4 instead of $3.

I don't mind criticism, honestly.  It's important to hear contrary viewpoints.

The Isotropic subforum, as it exists now, is all Dominion, so I categorized it with online Dominion as a Goko child.  I couldn't think of another place to put it -- it's mostly Dominion topics, so it seems weird to be in Innovation.  It could go to a new section, "Online Gaming Platforms", but does that mean Goko goes there too?

The bigger picture is that we're considering expanding this forum/site into covering more games than just Dominion -- not like BGG and trying to cover everything, but a subset of interesting deep games that can be played online with logs.  Innovation is the first step, and Twilight Struggle in a sense I had already started.  Maybe after that we'll add more games.

That having been said, it's very important to us that the existing f.ds community remains as it is.  Those aren't empty words -- we wouldn't try to expand if we thought it meant sacrificing what we already built.

What we are aiming for is that it turns out like Forum Games -- that stuff happens over in their section, and the Dominion stuff rolls on in the Dominion section.  We want to do for other games what we did for Dominion, and Innovation is an easy first step.  If it doesn't work out, then that's as far as we'll go.

What about this... Under the main "Dominion" section, you have "Online Dominion" as a Subforum (same level as Dominion General, Dominion Articles, etc). Under the "Online Dominion" forum, you have child boards for Isotropic and Goko. Or, since Goko is the official one, just have Goko threads directly in "Online Dominion".

Just a thought!

I have to admit that I'm glad kuroishin showed up (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=6282.0). This place was getting boring. I think I'm addicted to internet drama. :-[

You were the one who complained first...

Are you talking about the "I'm so annoyed at Goko" thread? That was really just meant as a joke, because given the title it would seem that I was making yet another Goko vs Iso debate thread, when there were too many already, and then the contents showed that I was actually complaining about there being too many of such threads.

Anyway, 15 is possible with only a single action card being played.

I can get 21.
Remake, Feodum, Feodum, Watchtower, Market Square.

Remake a Feodum (Gain 3 silvers, tally 3), Gain a Storeroom from Remake (tally: 4) than Trash it with WT to gain a Feodum (tally: 7) which you also trash to gain 3 silvers (Tally: 10).
Do this with other Feodum too. (tally: 20).
In meantime, reveal a Market Square once on any trash, for 21.

Catacombs, not Storeroom?

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Please intervene.
« on: March 19, 2013, 11:32:04 am »
I've started playing some games without having bought anything yet... just don't be the one to actually start any games. Look around for an open game; many of them will be with all the cards.

7633
Goons says: "While this is in play, when you buy a card, +1VP". When you play Procession on Goons, Goons is in the trash and no longer in play. So, you don't get any VP tokens for that.
However, it's not actually trashed on the first one, since it has to be in play to do the second play....shouldn't it at least give points for the first play?  {ed: although I guess that might be tricky since the points come from the buys--which is why maybe you should get all points from buys available before it is trashed, in this case 3}

Looks like you're missing a key aspect of Goons... which is that it does NOT give you any points due to the fact that it gets played. It doesn't matter how many times you played Goons, there is no "points for the first play" or "points for the second play". Goons only gives points based on "while this is in play." "In play" is completely separate from being "played." Yes, usually cards that are "played" end up "in play." But there's lots of exceptions such as Feast, or cards played with Procession. In the same way, if you Throne Room a Goons to play it twice, you will still only get ONE vp each time you buy a card, not two, because there is only one Goons in play.

The version of Goons you are thinking of is much more powerful than the actual Goons, because you can get a lot of VP from playing Throne Room-Goons or King's Court-Goons, even if you don't actually buy any cards.

You might can stretch KC and Throne Room too.

Well, those make you choose a physical piece of cardboard in your hand. The previous examples make you select a card name, not a specific instance of a card.

Right, meaning you can name Black Lotus. With Throne Room you can't choose Black Lotus.

I think the Dominion FAQ forum belongs with the new Dominion section and not the meta section.

Agreed; a board FAQ would be Meta, but Dominion FAQ is Dominion.

Very minor, but this should probably be called "other" or something like that, because "Innovation" is also "non-Dominion related", but that's in its own section now.

Easy puzzle:

What one other card belongs with these three, and why?

Rebuild, Mystic, Contraband

Wishing Well. Only cards that have you name a card.

Rules Questions / Re: Double Throne Room
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:43:20 pm »
And for a quick example:

Your hand is Throne Room, Throne Room, Smithy, Copper, Copper. You play Throne Room 1, selecting Throne Room 2. The first time you play Throne Room 2 you select Smithy, drawing 6 cards. Lets say one of these cards is Market. You may now select the Market for the second play of Throne Room 2.

I'm sure we're getting way overly clarifying here, but I cringe a tiny bit when I see "select Smithy, drawing 6 cards"... that's the whole source of confusion right there. I'd much rather say "select Smithy, drawing 3 cards. Then play Smithy again, drawing another 3 cards."

Rules Questions / Re: Double Throne Room
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:50:47 am »
Hello.

This happened to me in a game and we couldn't get to an agreement nor find the answer over the net. Hope you can help me.

If you play a throne room with a second throne room, do you have to declare which two actions will be copied before any one of them does or do you do that one at a time? The point is, if the first action card you play makes you draw any card, could any of those new cards be the second card that would be copied or it has to be one that was initially in your hand?

Thanks.

Welcome! :)

Others have answered correctly; note that it will help you to remember this: Throne Room does NOT "double" the effects of an action you choose. Rather, it makes you play that action, which includes doing everything that action says to do, and then play that action a second time, which includes doing everything that action says to do (a second time).

Goko Dominion Online / Does anyone play on the iPad?
« on: March 17, 2013, 02:36:33 am »
I just tried playing Goko on my iPad 1. Started 4 games, all crashed the browser before the game began. 3 during the game loading screen, and 1 a second after the cards showed up on the screen. I know that the iPad 1 doesn't quite have the specs of the newer version, but this seems a bit ridiculous.... It's not exactly ancient hardware here. Using Chrome, btw.

Should I just post this on GetSatisfaction? I am seriously considering buying all the sets mostly for the Dark Ages, Adventure, and AI play, but the ability to play a game on my iPad is a dealbreaker for me... Especially considerng the fact that a lot of the UI problems I have with it is caused by the fact that they wanted to make sure it worked and looked exactly the same on the iPad.

This removes almost every advantage that playing online has....

-Fast setup time
-Faster play time
-Not having to count up points at the end
-Faster cleanup time
-Not having to own all the actual sets (Goko sets are way cheaper than real sets, and only 1 player needs to own them)

The one online-advantage it retains is the ability to play against people who aren't physically near you. But if I were going to play with real cards, I would rather play with a group of friends IRL every time.

I know that "reveal" as an action you can take is well-defined, but is "when is a card 'revealed'" well-defined? As in, is a card only "revealed" if a specific card told you to "reveal" a set of cards that includes this card? Or is it "revealed" anytime the card becomes public, like when you play it, or trash it, or move it to the Island Mat?

7644
And if Doug Z does choose to answer, maybe he could comment on the date selection? I had blissfully assumed we would have IsoDom until a week after some official Goko launch. Was there a stealth launch last week? Or did the time just come?

He had always said 2 (I think) weeks after Goko was no longer beta.... I think Goko has removed the beta status now; though I don't know exactly when they did. I believe they said in one of the Q&As that they would not be having a big "launch" this time; they would just call it production.

Didn't save the log, so hopefully it will show up on Council Room tomorrow, but most likely I've played my last game now.

It was a fun Tournament-Colony-King's Court-City game. We both opened 2/5, which sucked for that board. He went City, and I went Tournament. I started to buy Cities with my $5s; otherwise Tournaments and King's Courts. Got Followers, then Princess, then Trusty Steed, then Diadem... the first 3 being played with a King's Court at least once each. Never got a second Province; got 5/3 Colony split plus 6 extra Estates to his 6 Curses.

Another thing is to keep an eye on your cost reduction. If you play your last Highway and suddenly find you can't Upgrade your Bank into a needed Province because they both cost zero, you're going to feel pretty stupid. There are lots of little interactions like that.

Good point, bad example. Makes more sense to talk about a missed opportunity to upgrade Copper into Province at that point, if you're playing 7-8 Highways on a turn. Upgrading Banks into Provinces is a terrible use of a Highway board.

I don't know if this is right. The only reason to have Bank in a Highway/Upgrade deck in the first place is that you upgraded a copper to it on a 6 Hwy turn so you could upgrade it to a province later.

I suppose that's true, upgrading to a Bank isn't terrible for that reason. It's just that the fact that Bank can be upgraded to Province normally means that the particular example means you were less likely to be playing a bunch of Highways before your Upgrade. If it has said Copper to Province instead, then it's a situation where you're much more likely to accidentally play too many Highways.

So everyone likes going out on a win when... and so if we assume that everyone who plays Isotropic today will play until they win a game... it's possible for all but 1 person to win their last game ever. At least one person MUST lose his or her last game.

That being said...
