Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Expansions in 2018
« on: July 17, 2018, 08:24:00 pm »
I didn't realize it had become so popular to hate on Prosperity.  I remember when that was everyone's favorite expansion.  I mean sure, it has Trade Route and Counting House and a few dud Treasures.  But it also has some of the strongest cards in the game - King's Court, Grand Market, Goons, Mountebank.  Rabble is a solid draw card, Cities can get insane, Worker's Village is a solid village, Watchtower is quite good.  And getting free Peddlers is awesome!  You can make a golden deck with Bishop, and Monument is pretty nice if you can get it rolling early.

My thoughts exactly. Prosperity was my first expansion, mostly because of the good reviews I saw on this forum. Maybe the most recent expansions have changed some opinions.

- Nothing stops you from revealing this repeatedly when an attack is played and taking unlimited coin tokens.

Why does this "you can reveal a reaction card an infinite amount of times" rule exist? It seems completely unnecessary and only causes rule confusion.

Ruined Watchtower (Reaction - Ruins)
Whenever you gain a card, you may reveal this from your hand, to put the gained card into your discard pile.

After release, have there been any cards that have turned out to be significantly stronger/weaker than you expected?

the rewards are not super impressive [...] but neither is the amount of effort that it takes — just play like 20 games every day and you'll become a top player within a year.
Uh... at 10 minutes a game, that's 200 minutes a day, three hours, 20% of your waking life, half your leisure time.

So no.

Dude, what? Three hours a day for a year is nothing. For most hobbies, if you do it for three hours a day for a year, you'll still suck at it compared to the average person doing it (who ever gets anywhere).

I'd be very surprised if the average player finishes more than 20 Dominion games a week.

Fun thread exercise!

For those worried that fixing the bottom ranked cards will now create a new bottom ranked cards ... it doesn't have to be a perpetual cycle.  We're just worried "adding points" to the bottom rank to improve them.   It's OK to have a new bottom ranked cards  since they were previously NOT in the bottom ranked cards hence, were decent to begin with.

Agreed. It's narrowing the gap between the top and bottom. Sure, this card may have some cool niche uses, but it's still bad in 90-93% of games.

It's a shame that Embargo is so bad. Really interesting and flavorful concept. It's one of my favourite cards in Seaside, though it never ends very well.

So I know you don't look at fan expansions, but you should check out the artwork from the Antiquities expansion, and then you should hire this JanBoruta guy to illustrate at least a couple cards in all future expansions! I especially like his human closeups on cards like Archaeologist.

https://imgur.com/a/WQ1aX

Hmmm...apparently that's not a question. Will you please hire this guy?

This brings me a question: How are the artists chosen for each card? Do you choose them, or does RGG handle that?

Netflix will take over the world with the skip intro button. It's now a better product than having an entire show on the harddrive.

What's worth watching on Netflix these days?

Lost in Space looks promising, though I've only seen the first couple episodes.

Was browsing the forum when I found this Gem. Now it's eating up my time.  ;D

I find that not allowing yourself to move around makes for a much less tedious and more challenging game.  Somehow I managed to guess within 20 miles in a spot in rural northern Sweden.

On my fifth try with Houndmaster. The hero power seems very weak compared to the others.
Was progressing very well with double +2 health on my minions, until Face Collector took control of my entire board with a Treasure I had picked up from the Satyr.

I've been toying with that mode as I still enjoy the solo content more than anything else. I played Tinkerer first and beat it quite easily on first play. Re-rollable RNG just made perfect sense to me. I've since tried Tracker 5 times or so and have only made the final boss once... I'm not really feeling the hero power. It's usability has a lot of potential (Especially when boosted to cost 1 and be useable twice), but I can't seem to ever have good spells available. Either I play too many early and can't pull what I want later, or I wait for the ones I want on rotation and the bosses flood me with useless junk. I'm also really, really bad at rogue though, so... I'll get it eventually.

Beat it on my first try by using Jade Shuriken with the double 1 cost hero power and the treasure that lowers the cost of cards that didn't start in your deck by (1), resulting in Infinite Jades. Cheap Shot was available to clear the board every turn.

Working on my third try with the Houndmaster. Jungle Giants didn't seem to work against infinite minions from Glinda Crowskin.

Also where is the contest that McGarnacle was talking about

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?board=32.0

That's fan card creation, not kingdom design. This is a kingdom design contest.

But that's for 2014. Where's the one for 2018

There hasn't been one.

People don't really care about kingdom design here, at least not as much as they used to.

We forgot about this one: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=15555.msg614801#msg614801

Looks like we never finished the Bracket.

I liked the MF implementation of Dominion. I mean, ShuffleIt is an improvement, but I had zero issues with the old one.

I don't like that each player ends up with a different set of Boons. That feels very swingy to me. I mean, Boons are already swingy in a similar way. But here, if player 1 gets a particular boon on turn 1, then player 2 immediately knows that they can never receive that Boon the entire game.

Yep. It's swingy. It's really a card for Timmy-type players. A for-fun card, and we've had a lot of fun with it indeed. I'm sure there will be a lot of players who just hate the kind of swinginess it can create. Heck some people hate Black Market, even though it's been proven to be a "high-skill" card.

EDIT: I am guessing, though, that it's not quite as swingy as it looks. Rather, I don't think it's swingy as I think it looks, but your mileage may vary.

Gotta say, as a Timmy player, I absolutely love this card. It reminds me of Miser, which is also a favourite of mine.

Yes, Dominion has always been lacking in theme, but that doesn't mean we should give up on the idea.

Any chance of a Nocturne design competition in the future? I've missed having these.

Dominion Articles / Re: Witch, revised for 2018
« on: February 10, 2018, 01:55:58 pm »

A lot of new players don't like Witch, because it slows down the game. Most people's idea of fun is getting to play a bunch of cards and produce a bunch of money. Witch gets in the way of that. But I like Witch. When I give out Curses, I think to myself "yes". When I get Curses, I think to myself "no". Even if you don't like it, you have to respect it.

This. My family has refused to play with any curser in the kingdom, and dislike Attack cards in general, which is a shame. Then they complain that the games are too short.

I did not even bother with the art list this time around.  Takes too much time.

Conversely, the art list is probably the only one I will be doing, due to my lack of experience.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Weird German Dominion promotion video
« on: November 12, 2017, 06:03:09 pm »
The video was far less strange than I expected from reading these comments. I'd say that the point of the video is to present something interesting and exciting-looking to potential players. They aren't going to know or give a crap if the people are playing it wrong. Sure, they could record a realistic game where everyone plays straight-faced the whole time. That looks fun.

However, since this is promoting a tournament, that point is kind of moot.
