General Discussion / David Lynch (Twin Peaks)
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:22:46 am »
I wanted to make my Hulu Plus subscription worthwhile so I decided to watch Twin Peaks. I was in college when it first aired, and I wasn't able to commit to many shows. After hearing so much about it, I'm giving it shot.

So far I've only seen the pilot and episode 2. I am so grateful to get past the pilot. The sound levels were atrocious, so I found myself riding that volume control like a roller coaster. I didn't catch everything because some of the dialogue was just so soft. How thrilled I was to see the captions come back in episode 2. And, well, the pilot also contained a lot of Lynchisms that were more annoying than artistic. He had some great shots, of course, but the show reminds me of just how overrated David Lynch is.

But hey, the 2nd episode gained some steam, and I was startled when the episode ended (unlike the pilot, where the end credits couldn't come soon enough). I'll be looking forward to watching the other episodes.

I have to forgive the dated look of a 23-year-old show. That's unavoidable. I try to stifle a chuckle when I hear the music, though. It's so overly dramatic. Very Lynch.

Making this a general Lynch thread in case people want to talk about his other works (I do like Mulholland Drive, even if I don't know what I'm watching).

I've been reading about Room 25. It sounds pretty fun. It's not a deep game, but it has a Mafia-like feel to it.

I want to learn more about it before I buy it. One way to do this is to play it, but I don’t know if anyone here is willing to run it.

So the next best way to learn it would be to mod a game. I'm wondering if I have enough information to run the game. I'll have to read the rules and look up tile distribution.

From what I've read, the traitors have an edge, though I suspect that will be mitigated by a PBF format.

First, I should see if anyone has a copy of Room 25. If so, and said owner does not want to mod a game, I'd like to talk with the person about modding my own game. I bet it'd be just as much fun to mod/watch.

Edit: Okay, I'll mod the game. I just need to create it. Players so far are:

1. Qvist
2. Tables
3. mail-mi

Other Games / Cards Against Dixity
« on: April 23, 2013, 02:22:41 pm »
I wonder what it'd be like to play Cards Against Humanity with Dixit rules.

What that would mean is that you don't use the black cards. Instead, you would choose a white card from your hand and make up your own question. Then everyone votes for the best white card. Just like with Dixit, you don't want to blow it away.

In thinking about it, I don't think I'd care much for this version, but it came to mind. A friend of mine was talking about a variant of CAH she played, but she's not divulging those rules yet. She says it makes the game more interactive. For some reason that made me think of Dixit rules for CAH.

Okay, if I don't stop reading this geeklist right now, I'll never get any work done. I must bookmark this, though.

I've only looked at the front page, but so far #20 is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. I'm sure that the same thing could be accomplished with Dominion cards. I'm already snickering at the thought of Harem getting the same treatment.

This geeklist is the reason why the internet exists.

Other Games / Lord of the Rings deckbuilding
« on: April 18, 2013, 02:22:58 pm »
Hmm, any preliminary thoughts about Lord of the Rings deckbuilding?

I haven't looked at the rules, but it just doesn't do anything for me. For one, calling something "deckbuilding" just seems like a transparent attempt to cash in on a trend's popularity (even if it is true).

The description doesn't sound groundbreaking. Sounds like it is styled off of games like Ascension and Legendary in that you have a custom pool.  Unlike Legendary, it doesn't sound like it is customizable. The archenemy deck sounds pretty cool, especially since you could "attack" other players by defeating the current archenemy and bringing out the next one to attack everyone.

If it comes out at a table, I'll be interested in trying it out (just like I did with Legendary). But it doesn't scream out to be purchased.

General Discussion / Marvel: Avengers Alliance
« on: April 08, 2013, 12:03:39 pm »
Since people are posting about games they play, I thought I'd see who else plays Avenger Alliance on Facebook. I played it when it first came out (coinciding with the release of the movie) and then let it drop. I started playing it again.

I don't friend random people just to build a network in a game (especially since I have friends who already play regularly, so I get my fill), but I think I'd be okay with most people on here. I never got into a screaming match with anyone from here, so that's positive.

Other Games / Death of a philomathic
« on: April 04, 2013, 10:14:23 am »
According to my calendar, today marks the death of Alfred Mosher Butts, the inventor of Scrabble. While unemployed during the Depression, he read the front pages of the New York Times and figured out the distribution of letters, on which he based the scoring criteria.

His wife surprised him by spelling quixotic and racking up 214 points.

He first dubbed it "Lexiko" and then "Criss Cross Words," but no one was interested in mass producing it. He later sold it to James Brunor, who renamed it "Scrabble" from the Dutch word, "schrabben" (to scrape or scratch). Only 532 sets were sold in the first year, but we now can see just how successful the game has been.

It would be interesting if they decided to release a new version of Scrabble with brand new scoring. Might be interesting to see just how the English language has changed since the 1930s. Although, Butts's method probably wasn't as rigorous as it could be.

Other Games / 6 Board Games that Ruined it for Everyone
« on: March 07, 2013, 08:53:34 pm »
Amusing Cracked article about bad board games.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-board-games-that-ruined-it-everyone/

Naturally, Monopoly shows up at #1. I suspect it's not because it's the worst game (I'd argue for Chutes and Ladders or Candyland) but because it's the most popular of not-good games. Though, the author is off base by saying that it's based entirely on luck. Negotiating is a major skill in it.

Though, I can't argue with the suggested alternative for Monopoly, except that it's not exactly a light game for most families.

Bonus points for this quote, though: Risk is worse for family game night than incest.

Forum Games / Wanted: Sentinels of the Multiverse cards
« on: March 04, 2013, 11:47:55 am »
So here's my dilemma. I would love to run a Sentinels of the Multiverse forum game. I'd be willing to put together the spreadsheet and maintain the card flow. I wouldn't even have to rely on private messages since it's a cooperative game, and I can make the hands public. It should work pretty well.

But I don't want to key in seven separate decks. And you know that there will be more than seven decks if the game becomes more popular.

I've been hoping to find a list of all of the cards and their effects. My Google Fu has failed me. So I figured I'd see if anyone is able to find something that I can't.

If I could just the list of cards, including their keywords and instructions, then I could put these in the spreadsheet and go from there.

So anyone got anything fruitful in this regard?

So how many people would be interested in playing Dixit at http://www.boiteajeux.net?

I hopped in a couple of games, but one guy doesn't realize it's his turn yet, and the other one started off just fine, but when the second player was to give his word, he inserted a spam link. Seriously, who the hell sabotages a freakin' online game with spam?

So I thought I'd see if I could get a game going with f.DS people.

Non-Mafia Game Threads / Red November - Gnomes survived well done!

Game State

Prologue

Captain Oleg Eelspeaker strained against the wheel. As the largest of the crew at 42 inches high, Oleg often steered the Red November during turbulence. Today, his barrel-chested physique served the crew well as he righted the submarine.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Oleg turned to Nikolai Barnaclescraper. "Progress report, Comrade," he demanded.

The lanky seaman unceremoniously dropped an empty fire extinguisher. His wide eyes bulged comically against a backdrop of soot. Releasing a puff of smoke from his lungs, he replied, "Fire is contained. Another fire reported on level 2. Two compartments are now filled with water. Reactor is dangerously hot. Also, Leonid Squidrider is passed out in the engine room."

Sneering, Oleg spat, "I always knew that son-of-an-elf couldn't hold his liquor." A thump interrupted him, muffled by the several inches of steel separating the compartments of the sub. He looked at the door and then nodded to Nikolai. The seaman gingerly approached the door and turned the handle several times. The door flew open, unleashing a wall of water cascading over the two gnomes. The limp body of Timur Sharktickler floated by Oleg .As he struggled to keep his footing, the captain kept one hand on the wheel and grabbed Timur with the other.

The gnomes found themselves neck-deep in water. The Pneumo-matic Door Press (tm) hissed shut and locked into place. The surrounding bulkhead buckled under the weight of the ocean, and the door groaned in protest as the metal twisted around it. Timur coughed water into Oleg's face as he regained consciousness.

"Wonder what else could go wrong," muttered Oleg. As if the universe felt obliged to sadistically reply, the submarine rocked suddenly from a great impact. Nikolai trudged through the water to the porthole. He scrambled toward Oleg, his face pale.

"S-s-s-sir," he stammered, "K-k-k-kraken starboard."

Cursing the ancestors of his enemies, Oleg pointed to the aqualung swaying from its hook. "You better take care of it, Barnaclescraper. I still have to guide this boat to the Mother Land."

Nikolai silently pointed to himself with an incredulous, inquisitive look, but he obeyed his captain. He slipped the breathing apparatus over his head, giving him a comical appearance. Once the device was strapped on, the gnome waddled through the water toward the exterior hatch. Oleg barked out his name.

As Nikolai turned to address his captain, Oleg tossed a harpoon gun at him. He clumsily caught the heavy armament and staggered backward from the force. Oleg pulled a flask from his pocket and took a hard swig from it. "Be sure to shoot the bastard in the eye. I hear they don't like that."

Any nautical inaccuracies can be chalked up to gnomish engineering and not author ignorance.

What is Red November?

Red November is a cooperative game where the players assume roles as gnomes on a doomed submarine. The whole thing is falling apart, and you must survive long enough for the submarine to get to rescue. Everyone wins if the submarine survives, and everyone loses if everyone dies or the submarine is destroyed (which results in the former). Alternatively, someone could turn on the others at the last moment and abandon ship before it's destroyed. In this case, the coward wins if the submarine is destroyed, and he loses if the submarine makes it to the end.

How is the game played?

This is a quasi-simultaneous mode of play where we track each player's position on the countdown. Moving from one part of the submarine to another takes time, and performing an action takes time. The more time you take, the more disasters are likely to happen. Then we move on to the person with the most remaining minutes and perform his turn. If you document all of the events, you may end up with weird time-warp effects like a gnome pumping out water before the compartment even springs a leak. Think of the submarine as being part TARDIS if you want.

How does this work in forum play?

There are no secret hands. Die rolls and card flips are handled by me. Information will be presented in a Google Docs spreadsheet, including a crude map of the submarine (prototype forthcoming). As each card comes up, I'll be sure to include explanations of what they do. In order to ensure that players understand the consequences of their actions and to keep me honest, players should post their actions along with how much time they think elapses. One thing you don't want to do is to calculate that something would take you 6 minutes but be surprised that it's really 8 minutes.

This looks too hard. Count me out.

The 1st-edition rulebook is pretty abstruse. I've been playing this game for years, and I only recently found out I've been doing two things wrong. You can look up rules summaries on BGG. Those are much nicer to read.

One thing about Red November is that it is reactionary. If nothing is going wrong, then you can be proactive by searching for items. For most of the game, however, you'll have a smorgasbord of disasters to fix. You won't even need to read much beyond the player aid. Where there may be some confusion, other players can give advice (they want to survive too!).

How many players does it take?

Red November can take up to eight players. The game can still happen with fewer players.

I have a burning sensation when I urinate

Why are you telling me this? Go see a doctor.

Other Games / Through the Ages online
« on: December 24, 2012, 11:42:53 am »
Starting a new topic based on discussion elsewhere.

If you have a hard time finding the time to play a full game of Through the Ages (or you want to see what all the hoopla is about), there is a web site where you can play the game: http://www.boardgaming-online.com/index.php?cnt=1

As far as I can tell,  it's designed to handle a game over the course of days/weeks/months. Hell, if everyone is online at the same time, I suppose you could complete a game within a day.

The interface is not 100% intuitive or really even documented. For that reason, it's been suggested that you play a game with yourself first so you can get used to the interface before diving into other games. It does help. You create a game and then add other players, only the other players are yourself. So, you can have a game with four players all named the same. It can get a little confusing, but the interface also designates by color, so it's all good.

I still like the online forum because I can access it with my phone, and I'm not always working on a computer where I should have nontext elements; this forum is stretching it. However, I can play on BGO at home as well and get my TtA fix.

Non-Mafia Game Threads / Witch's Brew II - Double, Double Toil and Trouble
« on: December 11, 2012, 10:03:24 am »
 Rules of the Game

Note: This part has been edited so the rules of the game are always visible in the first post. The original message is unchanged at the end.

At the beginning of a turn, each player will post his five chosen cards in an individual Quick Topic. When cards have been chosen, post in the forum that you are ready.

When all of the players have chosen their cards, the starting player posts which card he is playing by posting I am the…. The player immediately below him in the list (or the first player if there is no one below the current player) then indicates that he doesn't have that card, posts I am the… to take the role, or So be it to acquiesce . If you play the So be it then you perform that task immediately (which can be important for Druid, Witch, and Wizard).

After all players have performed their action, the last person to post I am the… gains the benefit of the card. Everyone else gets nothing, aside from the rewards already gained from playing So be it. This person now starts the next round of bidding by posting which card he is playing.

When you have played a card, it is assumed that you want to implement its action unless you say otherwise. In the case of So Be It the action happens immediately, so announce your intention to decline. In the case of I am the…, it cannot be resolved until everyone has had a chance to play it. You might not want to announce right then that you have no intention of implementing its action

Play progresses similarly until all cards are played. When everyone is out, we start a new set where each player posts in his QT his next hand and announces he is ready in a forum post.

I'll update the game state as often as I can.
Game state
Witch's Brew rules

Other players may also update the game state if they request access.

Normally, the potions without ravens and the number of vials are kept secret, but that's impossible to do in a forum game, so we'll track points as they happen. This is a departure from face-to-face gaming.

The original post:

I had fun moderating the previous Witch's Brew game, so I'm willing to host another one. I've learned a few things from the previous game, which I've applied to the spreadsheet.

The rules are actually pretty simple and can be found here.

If you would like to see each of the 12 role cards in action, you may peruse the previous game.  You can also find the forum rules there, including a caveat that VPs will not be hidden, despite the rulebook

If anyone is interested, this will be the game state.

I'll add players that have confirmed they would like to play. Once I have five players, I'll randomize the player positions and set up the QuickTopics (or reuse QTs for the recurring players).

General Discussion / How old are you?
« on: December 04, 2012, 02:29:42 pm »
So, the topic of age came up in another thread, and it seemed fitting to post an obligatory, "How old are you" thread.

Since I've been chumming it up with some people in the non-Mafia games, I'm mildly curious.

But don't just post your age. That's boring. Post something relevant to your age. Who was your favorite band as a kid? Where were you when the Challenger exploded/Berlin Wall came down/9-11/etc.? What TV show or movie really influenced your life? What was interesting about your childhood? Anything age-related will do.

Other Games / Sentinels of the Multiverse!!!! POW!
« on: November 21, 2012, 09:57:42 am »
Last weekend I finally got a chance to play Sentinels of the Multiverse. It was quite fun. I've seen it mentioned in the forum once before. There is concern that the beginning set could get boring kind of quickly. I imagine that it could, but I put in about eight games this weekend with just the base set and still had fun. I had access to the first expansion (Rook City) and was trying my hand at one of the new heroes, but the convention closed down at that time (if the hotel says it wants you out by 7, you comply dammit).

If you haven't heard of it, it's a comic-book-style cooperative game where your team of superheroes battles a villain in some peril-fraught location. A round is fairly straightforward:

  • The villain goes first and follows a script. The flavor is heavy for this game. If you're fighting the self-aware robotics factory, then the villain alternates between building weapons to hurt you and repairing itself so that the piece you destroyed earlier is a threat again. If you're fighting the alien warlord, his horde of minions grows in number and threaten to overwhelm you. If you fight the inventor of the terralunar tractor beam (not the exact name), then you first race the clock to stop him from pulling the moon into the Earth and then contend with a vengeful mad scientist who blasts you every turn. Each villain is different.
  • Each hero then gets a turn. You play a card, activate a power, and draw a card. Each hero has his own deck, so what you draw will be useful to you. Again, theme drips here. The Batman clone has gadgets and can deflect damage. The speedster cycles through her deck and plays a bunch of cards. The power suit builds up his ammunition for a devastating attack. And some heroes can help out others. The fire-based hero has a card that converts everyone's damage to fire, which allows him to increase that damage. The psychic can give other heroes cards or can predict what the villain will do next (and even manipulate its actions).  There is a leader character who has some punch of his own, but he really shines when he inspires the rest of the team.
  • The environment has a role in this too, and a card is usually flipped for this. On the Mars base, you may have to contend with pervasive red dust miring your equipment or an oxygen leak damaging the combatants. You may have to contend with rampaging dinosaurs on a lost island. And let's not forget all the innocents in danger when fighting right in the middle of Megapolis. The environment affects heroes and villain alike, but it just wouldn't have tension if it didn't inconvenience the heroes more.

I only played the basic set, and apparently it was the original Kickstarter version that my friend has. From what I read, the enhanced version, which costs $10 more, has better quality components, an updated rulebook, and updated villains. See, the villains in the original game didn't scale. I noted that the villain didn't change whether we had three heroes or five. And it was ridiculously easy to defeat the villain with five players (though each villain card had an advanced rule that you could use to make it harder). From what I read, the updated villain cards now take into account the number of players. Also, the enhanced box is large enough to house the cards plus expansions and now includes an insert to hold the cards. The original box was completely empty so your cards slid around and got all mixed up.

I plan on picking up this game. It's actually not a bad price if you go to CoolStuffInc or MiniaturesMarket. I have the expansions wishlisted on CSI; I am trying to package this game with the anniversary edition of Galaxy Trucker so I can get free shipping.

I definitely recommend giving this game a try. It's light-hearted fun, and you may even find yourself getting into the action.

Rules of the Game

Note: This part has been edited so the rules of the game are always visible in the first post. The original message is unchanged at the end.

At the beginning of a turn, each player will post his five chosen cards in a Quick Topic set up by me. This accomplishes two things: 1) a way for a nonplayer to verify cards are being played correctly and 2) confirmation that the players are ready.

When all of the players have chosen their cards, I'll announce that the next round is to begin and announce the starting player (this is random at first and then is based on who won the last bid in the previous round).  The starting player will post which card he is playing by posting I am the….

In the case of So Be It the action happens immediately, so announce your intention to decline. In the case of I am the…, it cannot be resolved until everyone has had a chance to play it. You might not want to announce right then that you have no intention of implementing its action, but you can send me a message in the QT. Naturally, if the action requires a choice to be made, it won't be implemented until you elaborate.

Play progresses similarly until all cards are played. When everyone is out, send me a QT with your next hand. If you play all your cards early, you may send a QT to me early with your next hand, but keep in mind that the events happening after you're out could affect your decision.

I'll update the game state as often as I can.

Original Message

I pulled out Witch's Brew the other day and marveled at how much I enjoy the game. I then thought about making it a forum game, and I think it'll work. I'll obviously have to maintain a spreadsheet so everyone can see what cauldrons are available and how many components other players have, but each turn is practically run by the players.

I would have a Quick Topic set up for each player so that they can submit the cards they choose, but that would only be so that I can announce when everyone's hands are selected.

I would open this up to five players. I think the game really shines with five, but there are rules for three and four.

I don't have the means to link to the rules right now, but they should be easy to find (and if someone else links to them, I'd be grateful).

So, is there any interest in Witch's Brew? It looks like it should be easier to maintain than most other games. I'll have some spotty connection this weekend due to the Kansas City Game Fair, but I'll mostly be available.

General Discussion / "You think too much"
« on: October 26, 2012, 09:55:38 am »
As a board gamer, do you find yourself accused of thinking too much? Well, "accuse" is a strong word, but I guess "called out" might be appropriate.

My co-workers at lunch have expressed an interest in playing games. Knowing they weren't hardcore gamers, I brought Blokus and Gobblet. I introduced a form of Hanabi. This gets interesting looks from other people in the cafeteria, and one woman that we know even looked at the strange way we were holding our cards in Hanabi and said, "You guys think too much for lunch."

Sadly, this isn't the first time I've heard such a thing. I have a hobby that stimulates my mind. I love thinking tactically. I love solving problems. When I relax, I'm usually not doing nothing.

Even among my game-playing lunch crowd, I'll hear someone say, "Count me out for this one. I'm not in the mood to think." I always found that statement weird.

I mean, I'll sometimes not be in the mood for a game, but I would always say, "I'm not in the mood to play," instead of "I'm not in the mood to think." I'm always in the mood to think.

I guess I'm an oddball in that I don't consider thinking to be a bad thing. I suspect there are a lot of you who feel the same way.

Other Games / Kingdom of Loathing card game - An Adventurer is You!

So, apparently, there's a Kickstarter for a KoL card game. It's part deck-building, so one could compare it to Dominion and such. Of course, I wasn't drawn to it being a deck builder. I was drawn to KoL. What's that? You don't know what KoL is? Well, feel free to check out the KickStarter at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/336486938/mr-card-game?ref=live

But I highly suggest you play the online game and see what it's all about. It's a hoot.

Other Games / Tobago

Has anyone played Tobago? I've played a couple of games, but I've really enjoyed them.

I can safely say that I've never played a game like it, and I think it might be a safe bet to say that there is no game quite like it, but my experience is admittedly limited.

It's kind of like a territory capture game, but you're not really capturing territories. You're reducing territories to your advantage. And it's not really a bidding system, but there's a similarity as people choose to take certain cards. And there is an element of risk with the curses.

I've had to cool down my recent board-game purchasing spree, but I'm sorely tempted to pick this up for my own library.

General Discussion / A joke thread

Seems like something that would do us all a bit of good would be to have a joke thread—a little something to pass the day, especially for those who access the forum during work hours.

I'll start with one of my favorite terrible jokes.

What goes clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop, bang-bang, clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop?
