Dominion General Discussion / Re: More Fun With (Un)popular Buys
« on: December 26, 2011, 07:58:09 am »
hmm chancellor... wonder why neither of the first 2 guys have it, is it actually useful? o.O

It is a really nice Silver when it is the only terminal you are going to have in your deck. It can also boost you to play crucial cards more often (Mountebank, Witch, ...), but I would be afraid of 2 terminals so I would only combine one Chancellor and Familiars...

But you didn't look closely - I have Chancellor in my least list ;)

So, strategy would be go for mass Bag of Gold because it only costs $0 so why not? :) Get a couple adventurers and Diadems thrown in and I'm great :).

Maybe I missed a joke here, but...Diadem and Bag of Gold are prizes from tournament  ;D
Yes, yes you did. The first one was meant as sarcasm and the 2nd as a joke.

Fishing Village(92.0) Border Village (90.1) Caravan (89.8) Silver (88.2) Nobles (87.8) Goons (87.4) Tournament (86.3) Province (85.7) Worker's Village (85.2) Festival (84.4)
11: King's Court (84.3) 12: farming village (83.2)

As you can see I've been a Village idiot quite a bit in my time as a level 0(Only recently leveled up). Now I am level 4 (thanks to all you level 20's 30's and 40's that accepted my proposed games and taught me things   :D)

In the original 10 cards setup I would make a deck of some Fishing Villages, Nobles, Tournaments, and Border Villages together with as many Provinces as I could spare. :P

edit: And lowest(hmm chancellor... wonder why neither of the first 2 guys have it, is it actually useful? o.O) :

Diadem (11.0) Chancellor (13.3) Counting House (13.7) Navigator (17.4) Bag of Gold (18.2) Stash (19.0) Harvest (20.5) Adventurer (21.0) Cache (22.0) Coppersmith (22.7)
11. Explorer
12. Copper

At a young age I was taught that coppers were bad unless you were going gardens. They were EVIL. So I trashed them, a LOT. I saw no use to Chancellor after trying it a little bit. Navigator I lose with more than I win. Never really get to use it effectivelly. Same with the others except for BoG and Diadem. Fool's Gold would've been on this list except that I recently played a game where I went for a Fool's Gold strategy. It was on this list a couple days ago xD.

So, strategy would be go for mass Bag of Gold because it only costs $0 so why not? :) Get a couple adventurers and Diadems thrown in and I'm great :).

This is slightly off topic, but I find it odd how Donald X has less "respect" than theory on this forum...
If you look at posts then respect and do posts/respect then you see that actually, Donald comes out with more respect. It is theory's posts that cause the extra respect.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night. I would like to thank theory for all his hard work, Donald for keeping those expansions coming while also checking back at the forum and reading all that we have to say, and Shark_Bait for being Shark_Bait.

Is this confirmed as a smartphone app then? I was pretty sure it was announced to be "on a number of platforms".
Their goal was to support everything. I do not know what all that includes, but whatever you are asking about, they would certainly like to include it and probably will.
So, will we have a must-pay-for isotropic that will make the current isotropic have to shut down?

Make a man a fire, and he will be warm for a day.  Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

There's the hilarious King's Court - Scheme - Posession - Chapel mirror match, where both players trash all their money because each player plays more with their opponent's deck their own, and the game ends in a stalemate with both players refusing to buy cards.
This must be why theory never plays Alchemy games. lol.

Also, I am starting a lot of sentences with words like 'but' and 'also' although my English teacher told me not to.  ;D

Well then, your English teacher lied to you. There is nothing grammatically wrong with starting a sentence with a conjunction. Also, you can definitely start one with also.
It is normally wrong to start a sentence with a conjunction. I don't know why, it just is. I was taught it in 5th grade.

Lookout Troll?

I'm not sure why you're grinning about this.  I would expect this to be more of a rage thing.
You need to spend more time in the interwebs my friend. The face is a popular "troll" face. Basically, your enemy grinning at your dismay.

it might be a sign that i play too much dominion, but those nested quotes remind me of king's court stacks.

No worse...

This is one of my favorite topics so far.

Let me just add:

Scumbag Santa knows what your subconscious wants.  ;D
No... Now you've done it. The great nation of ponies is coming to attack! All manly men to arms! Villagers man your Villages! Jesters Keep Jestering! Jack Of All Trades Teach the others how to be manlier men! And most important of all, Coppersmiths, I hereby order you all to, become Goldsmiths or join the ponies  8)

So what, women aren't allowed to play Dominion?  I'm sure the nice lady on the Forge card would beg to differ.
You're right! Take all the women away for safety!

5 hours later
Villager: uhh... Sir?
Me: Yes?
Villager: Well... we told the women to go away and well...
Me: Hmm?
Villager.. They all went away... to the Ponies....
Me: WHAT? NOOOOO! Please tell me we at least kept the Witches.
Villager: Well... one stayed... but uhh....
Me: Yes?
Villager: She wants gifts or she will leave too.
Me: Fine... tell the Witch she can rig as many competitions for herself to win as she wants. Free of charge bla bla bla. And, if anyone reports her or w/e she is allowed to do whatever she wants with them outside of lethal action unless they are obviously with the ponies. Also, be warned, teenage boys have been infected by the Pony Plague. Just check out this scout report. But be warned... it is terrifying.
Villager: Omg how did so many teenagers be caught by their influence?
Me: I don't want to know...
DUN DUN DUN...

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards You Horribly Misjudged
« on: December 21, 2011, 03:17:20 pm »
Ironically I first saw this game when I was ~8 but never remembered the name and didn't find it till I was ~13@ theory's awesometastic blog. ^_^_^_^

Those numbers don't add up unless you were a playtester at 8 years old.

And on-topic, I don't really have many cards that I misjudged. I first discovered Dominion around October-ish time last year when someone at my local boardgame club pulled it out and taught me. At the time I was pretty new to 'real' games altogether (I'd only been going to the club for a month or two to get me out of the house and before that I'd only played Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess... The usual suspects). I fell in love with the game and looked it up on BGG and discovered the link to Isotropic. I played there a few times and then saw Theory in the lobby advertising this site and so I was pretty much here before I'd finished learning all of the cards.

I guess I underestimated a couple of cards the first time I saw them (Chapel, Ambassador, Goons etc.) but as soon as I'd been beaten by them once or seen an article about them on the blog, I knew what was going on.
w/e who knows. Besides I said about 8. Maybe I was 9 or 10. I don't remember that well as to ages xD. I just remember events I've been too. For instance, I remember my first base ball game @ a stadium but I don't remember my age then or what stadium it actually was lol.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:54:31 pm »
One thing that I've learned in my 24 years being online is that text is a terrible medium to convey tone. Jokes don't always go over so well.

For example, in a real-life game, if one person has a 5/2 split while I have a 4/3, I'll jokingly exclaim, "Hax!" If I did that in Isotropic—especially to a complete stranger—I would not be surprised if he took it poorly. I wouldn't mean to insult him, but my assumption that he would find that as humorous may well be my folly.

When someone looks to be rude, that might not be his intention. He may be trying to convey a joke, or he may not have a perfect grasp of English, or maybe it's even a combination of both. It's the listener's job to comprehend the message, but it's also the sender's job to ensure the message is easily and universally comprehended. Humor in a textual format is difficult to pull off, and it's very easy for the other person to interpret it as something else.

Of course, if there is a string of profanity, then I'm less likely to give that person the benefit of the doubt and just assume he's really that angry at me.

That's what smilies are for.

"Hax! :P" or "Hax! ;)" should do nicely. :)
Nope. I've tried it. Some people haven't seen a smily before. Also, you would be surprised how many haven't seen :P or XD or xD or even -_-.

Well if people don't know common internet lingo, that's not your fault it's theirs. What can you do?
Don't say Hax. That, and link them to something like http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=239640

Province- I was eating pizza and had my plate over part of the card when first shown it by my friend (he slid it across the table) and thought it said Pizza. Later I saw the same picture with the word Province and yelled "WHAT THE COPPER IS THIS?!?"

Then I read Gardens instead of just pushing it aside as a "girls' card". Needless to say I face palmed :(
edit: Chapel I actually understood, as well as most of the other cards. Ironically I first saw this game when I was ~8 but never remembered the name and didn't find it till I was ~13@ theory's awesometastic blog. ^_^_^_^
