Dominion General Discussion / Re: Storage Solution for Dominion
« on: September 27, 2011, 12:52:15 pm »
Mine are in a binder, but the cards are not sleeved. I can buy the 3x3 binder pages for $0.25 from my gamestore, and each slot holds the 10-12 cards nice and cozily. The original money & VP cards are stuffed in old playing card boxes which i carry around in a bag with the binder.

I can only imagine what sleeving the entire set does to the size and weight of the beast that is Dominion. Good luck...

Other Games / Re: Are any Dominion inspired games worth playing?
« on: September 23, 2011, 12:23:03 pm »
This Fortunes of War game is an amusing twist on Dominion. You get Wounds (curses) in every game, but they can easily be healed by lots of cards. When you head a wound, you always get +1 card. They kept copper, silver and gold, estate, duchy, province (which costs 9 now) and created a bunch of new cards. Some are good, some are dumb. Much more conflict. Good diversion.

Example of good card:
Stallion $6
+2 Cards
+1 Action
+1 $

ooo.... Lab +coin. Spammable fun

Example of weird card:
Ghost $6
3VP
+5 Cards
Each of your opponents gains a Ghost.

If your opponents never use it, the card basically reads: +5 Cards. Your opponents gain a Duchy.

Example of scary card:
Dragon $7
Your opponents gain 3 Wounds.
Trash a Treasure Card from your hand.

The Seaside rules specifically tell you what to do with TR when you play it on a Duration card. The Prosperity rules repeat the ruling for KC. The rules are really, really, clear. TR & KC stay out if you used them to play a Duration, until you clean up the Duration. No inference needed.

Except on what to do with chained TR,KC that hit durations. Donald had to make a new ruling on that one.

80
From Seaside rules:

"If you play or modify a Duration card with another card, that other card also stays in your play area until it is no longer doing anything"

You can hit 'info' on ISO to see that your KC is sitting there with your Caravan in your play area.

MODs: move topic to rules?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: A Noob's Expansion - Come Rip it Apart...

The Servant's Quarters card could be discarded by any discard-for-benefit card on your turn for some nice combos. Discard it to secret chamber, vault, horse traders, HAMLET, etc, and draw a card.

Let's see, a deck made of SQ and Hamlet. Play hamlet, discard a SQ for +1card and +action. Not bad.

Weird things would happen if your deck was small and you could play vault or secret chamber multiple times. You could discard a bunch of SQ and draw them right back through their own discard effect. Then play another vault. Not entirely broken, you can do that with a scrying pool anyway.

Download the implementation of Dominion from here:

http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=2366

that lets you play against 3 AIs that don't suck. Not saying they are great, but they have clever 3-pile logic built in. If they sense the game is ending, they rush VP piles. This will get you used to playing against 3 average players.

1 potion & ideally a +buy card early, to buy SP whenever you can.
trash cards (slowly is ok)
get #villages = #terminals - 1.

get a 2nd potion after a few turns

pick up cantrips & terminal actions whenever you can't do the above.

draw your deck. yay!

Goons is a great anti-possession card. Maybe the best.

I like rulebooks. I mean, I really like reading them in detail. Especially funny ones, which often join me in the bathroom.

But I understand that most people 'read' the rules by skimming them just enough so they can play the game. guided is right, that rule is clear in the book, but I can see how someone could skip over it even if they read the book. Not everyone is crazy like me.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Hoard/Scout
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:06:51 pm »
It seems to have inherited the only one Hoard logic from the original Hoard strategy.

Do you want it to buy a 2nd hoard instead of gold? Or a 2nd hoard instead of a duchy when it has hoard it play?

Simulation results! Scout & Hoard not good.  :(

First I fixed Hoard strategy so that it more aggressively bought VPs (whenever Hoard is in play, it will buy the best VP it can). Then I ran that against itself with 1 scout (more scouts is worse), bought anytime after the first hoard when nothing else looks good.

Smart Hoard 53% vs Smart Hoard with 1 Scout 41%

Rules Questions / Re: Teaching a "draw" phase
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:14:35 pm »
When I teach Dominion to new folks, the stage of play that confuses them the most is that they draw at the end of their clean-up phase. For some reason, it doesn't feel intuitive to draw cards then.

I thought people liked drawing cards  :o  Just ask them if they want something to look at when it's not their turn. They will start drawing cards.

I have more trouble the first few times with "discard everything". Yes, the money. Yes, the card you just bought. Yes, those cards in your hand as well. EVERYTHING. That part seems unnatural the first few times.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: 3 Player Dominion
« on: August 29, 2011, 10:49:24 am »
If you ignore curses in a 3-player game, while the other 2 go for it, you get the same 10 curses but you get them FASTER than in a 2p game.

I don't think it's a good idea to ignore most cursing attacks in 3p.

Start buying duchies with 6-8 provinces left. Depends on game.

The FAQ for Treasure Map tells you what to do if you have 3 copies of TM and you play a Throne Room. It's what AJD said, trash 'em all, only gain gold once (x4).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The quest for a Nash Equilibrium
« on: August 19, 2011, 09:08:31 am »
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't think there will be many boards where you can find Nash eq, in 2,3 or 4 player games. The strategy-set is too wide and the opportunities to react too numerous (even without attacks) that I think we'll be stuck in a big ring of near-degenerate RPS.

That being said, it will still be fun to look... I just think you could be tweaking for a long time

Dominion Articles / Re: Request: Golem
« on: August 18, 2011, 06:46:05 pm »
One thing about Golem decks I'm not sure has been mentioned:

They don't find treasure!

If you Golem and hit two not so great actions, skipping all your money along the way, you end up with... not much more than what you started with! You need a source of +$ or +cards to pair with the Golem, or else you are just wasting time.

I've seen it plenty and done it myself: Golem, find cool actions. Do cool actions. Wait, I only have $4 again?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Which card takes the longest to play?
« on: August 11, 2011, 07:16:19 pm »
Bah. I build scrying pool decks IRL all the time. I can play them fast. I have to shuffle very turn, but the actual spying and drawing is easy.

Pawns can be slow. Nobles can be slow if your opponent hasn't played with them much. Golem got a little ridiculous one game with curses and no trashing.

Rules Questions / Re: Throne room/king's court
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:55:17 am »
The rule on multiple TRs or KCs in play might have changed at some point.

I think the clearest thing to do is to leave out all TRs and KCs that are directly used to play durations, and clean up everything else. So you would clean up the first KC, since it didn't directly target a duration.

If you KC a KC, then play 3 durations, leave out one KC touching all 3. Clean up the other one.

I'm not sure it would be wrong to leave them both out, just pick one way and go with it.

Davio's is buying a Harem after 2 golds (and buys estates before harem's...)
Looks like 1 gold is way to go, but more testing?!

I think you want Durations to stay out a turn, so I'd rephrase Doppelganger as:
( ... When you remove that card from play during your Clean-up phase, return it to the supply)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Kings Court + Possession
« on: July 27, 2011, 07:18:26 pm »
According to CR, I've won all 3 of my KC + Possession 2p games, and each time I did it without buying both (I'd have one or the other, depending on the board). I think each time my opponent pulled off the combo on me, but that clearly doesn't mean victory. One trick is to possession proof your deck, as described in the blog's strategy article, or just ignore it and go for points before they can get you.

Or you can go for the combo, but don't count on it to win everytime

You win multiple internets for that answer.

I hope the hardware store takes internets. Real copper is expensive...

PS EDIT: Spolier tag over kill? They can be so much fun
