Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Self-Referencing Cards
« on: August 12, 2012, 03:27:14 pm »
Man, you guys will make lists out of ANYTHING

Come to think of it, we need a list of lists that we've made.
We have a few lists of lists. What we really need is a list of the lists of lists.

Indeed. My favourite Wikipedia page is this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lists_of_lists

Ehm, when you play Spoils you have to return it to the supply pile. So I'll play a spoils and 4 coppers, but before buying anything I have to return the Spoils. So that seems to leave me with 4 money to buy with.

Naturally this isn't the correct interpretation, but it seems the obvious one from the wording. Why not say "When you discard this in clean-up phase"? To avoid combo with herbalist and bank?

No, once you play a treasure it gives you money, doesn't matter if it is picked up later.

Like, if you buy mandarin and your treasures goes back on deck, you still have all the money it provided if you have more buys.

Well, yeah if you read my entire post you see I agree with you. My point was mainly that it is a bit confusing (especially to noobs) having to remember how many spoils you have played, and it seems more clean to just return in discard phase. Hence the question, is it that important to avoid combo with herbalist and bank? (And potenially other cards I don't think of now).

Using the poker as an example that has been previously mentioned.   BEFORE all the poker sites legalized the use of them online, if you used it to benefit your game, was it cheating then while the poker sites were... 'silent'.

Edit: On second thought, it sounds very similar to using steroids in baseball before they were properly banned.  Cheating?

If theory prohibits use of the extension, then it is properly banned (aka illegal/cheating), no matter if he can enforce it or not.

Quote from: Turambar
Now if the extension should be allowed or not in tournaments is completely irrelevant to most of this discussion, the point is that the extension wasn't allowed, and you shouldn't have forced the issue. IMO theory should have refused you using spreadsheets or pen&paper as well. What would you have done then?
Used them without telling him, obviously.

But then he would be cheating, something he claims he would never do, so he could not have done that.

I wish people would stop accusing me of violating the rules. I didn't, I wouldn't have under any circumstances, and I never will in the future.

Can someon plz post a link to the tournament rules? Are they the "DominionStrategy Championship Rules"?

Because if they are, using the unofficial point counter is clearly cheating (or violating the rules or whatever) as stated in the rules:

If the players are unable to reach an agreement, they shall play with randomly selected cards (excluding any fan-made cards), no veto mode, identical starting hands, and the official point counter.

No, they aren't - those were for the tournament last winter. They were worded similarly though, and I don't think using the extension was illegal in that one either. It's pretty hard for me to see from your rules quote how using it is "clearly cheating". Those words (and the similar ones used for the rules this time) prescribe some things that should be true about games; they don't say anything about what shouldn't be true.

Ok if i quote the full quote of theory in the DominionStrategy Tournament RUles:

Players may, upon mutual consent, agree to play under any constraints they wish (e.g., with/without veto mode, sets limited to a particular expansion, with/without point counter).  If the players are unable to reach an agreement, they shall play with randomly selected cards (excluding any fan-made cards), no veto mode, identical starting hands, and the official point counter.  (Although we understand the objections to point counters, we have no choice but to permit their use because we simply cannot effectively enforce otherwise.)
Since this paragraph concerns all add-ons and constraints, it is clearly implied that if players do not agree, then only the things mentioned are allowed. Now for the National tournament the rules where much more sloppy, but still one should from the wording expect that this wouldn't be allowed in this tournament either.

Now if the extension should be allowed or not in tournaments is completely irrelevant to most of this discussion, the point is that the extension wasn't allowed, and you shouldn't have forced the issue. IMO theory should have refused you using spreadsheets or pen&paper as well. What would you have done then?

General Discussion / Re: Euro 2012

I really like Greece qualifying, because now all the "oh, they are not playing the Correct Type Of Football (TM)"-people are going to start complaining how bad this is for football, which I always find funny.

Playing football is about winning games, and Greece are (sometimes) extremely good at using their (not very good) players to do that effectively, which is impressive.

In the same way Chelsea deserved to win the Champions League final, because they defended well, and were effective. In general (barring mistakes by the referee) the team that wins almost always deserves it, for all sufficiently good definitions of "deserve to win".

Like some others I also have an issue with animations, if there is no option for both turning animations off and only playing against other players without animations, I don't think I'll bother trying it. Even many Isotropic games are too slow for my liking.

Donald X has already stated that the animation speeds shown are medium, and that there is a fast setting as well and the fast is pretty comparable. He also mentioned that he hopes that their is the ability to pair based on it for quickmatches because well if the other person is still watching you play a card then your effectively on medium.

Isotropic is too slow? How? Isotropic does the BARE MINIMUM it straight resolves actions theres no animation.

I never said that Isotropic was slow, i said that some games played at Isotropic are slow. That happens for two reasons:

1. Slow cards, for instance pawn, hamlet and scrying pool (I often veto scrying pool just because I cannot stand the 3-min turns).

2. Slow players, and I'm not talking about thinking what to buy the first rounds (or the occasional break for thinking later), but when you take ages both playing actions and buying every round you are too slow for my liking.

I agree with your comments mith. The first game I don't really know why i won, or how I should play. Weird game.

The third game I played really badly, opening double jack(wishing I'd read how double jack does in colony games), but then (for some reason) started buying hunting parties. Naturally this didn't work out.

The last game dukes wasn't even my plan, but when I hit 7/6/5 when you bought provinces, early duchies was my only chance, while hoping my deck could survive it. Luckily it did.

Thx for the games, really tense ones! I was down 1-3 (after, at least some, really questionable play on my part), and was excpecting to lose, but I managed to come back. Very good opponent considering his rank.

Other Games / Re: What other games are as good as Dominion?
« on: December 02, 2011, 05:35:30 pm »
The game i like most (together with Dominion) is Agricola. Anyone here playing at play-agricola.com?

I also like Puerto Rico, Battlestar Galactica and lots of other games, but none as much as my 2 favourites.

I ended in second place, so I know what happened in the final ;).

The Japanese guy got a super Horn of Plenty-turn and got 4 provinces in a turn, so it was a deserved winner. I got an unlucky start in the final, so I'm not really sure if I could have won if I'd been luckier. I probably misplayed a bit anyway (I'm not very good with HoP).

The japanese guy said he played on isotropic as well, but I don't remember his online name.

Regarding the skill of the players, certainly quite a few of them wasn't exceptionally good, but it's hard to really see who is good and who is not from few games, luck plays too big a part. For instance I ended second to a Coppersmith/Great Hall opening my second game, which cannot be the correct opening.
