Help! / Re: WW needs help - how does Marin do it?
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:25:39 pm »
Game 9: Can someone explain how I lose the curse war 8-2? Yes, I probably over-buy remake, but with so many FVs, I'm looking to get the 5-cost draw cards, which just never happens for me really until it's way too late.

Get council room in 2nd shuffle and stop buying fishing village - remake, which is not the best combo...
So you're telling me that on turn 6, I should have bought COUNCIL ROOM and not play the remake?
Actually I meant 2nd shuffle where you bought witch instead. It is all about tempo in this stage and council room is the only card that gives you it. Then go and pick up some witches. What i tried to say is that you still have 7 coppers and an estate in your deck and you want to play remake as often as possible. If you get that council room+remake turn you can actually remake your trash and buy something useful.

You are somewhat too dogmatical.

marin feels like he thinks more of his own rather follow some previously walked path.

Although he tried to convince me that double ambassador is almost always better than amb silver... which I think is false.

I'm also running bad against him, but sample size not big + i'm sure some of them were luckbox wins.

Lighthouse mint FTW.

with 2 money go for another lighthouse, with 3 i would opt for trade route.

i occasionally flame my opponents for sub-optimal plays. If someone playing this would win me and argue that this was not a luck win i would get really mad.

NO strategy based purely on attack is going to work. (TR/KC/TR/KC-Militia/Goons-Masq)

NO strategy that isn't able to play strong attack counters (almost?) every turn (lighthouse, moat) won't work. (mostly mentioned 3 pile enders)

Strategy must have a huge draw. Mostly for gain card-draw card in same turn, being able to play critical cards every turn (lighthouse, outpost).

I would say quarry-fishing village is very very strong opening.
Possible further buys include: another quarry, workers village (prefer over fishing village, because of somewhat better draw and critical +1 buy), wharfs (or council room?), KC,TR (no comment), forge, outpost. That's how huge draw gets built fast. For defense vs. attacks - lighthouse.

In end phase bridge for mega turn or goons/watchtower for ''some'' VPs.

I don't see anything particularly horrifying there, but at the same time I don't think either of you can claim the moral high ground. This topic is getting a bit pathetic now.

Yes, agreed, your post is indeed a bit pathetic. :)

10:59 def: wow, that is a weak, weak board.
10:59 ARTjoMS: why did u veto pwn?
10:59 ARTjoMS: only+buy
10:59 def: that's why
10:59 def: I thought you may go ambassador->engine
11:00 def: which I wanted to block.
11:00 ARTjoMS: meh didnt want it
11:01 ARTjoMS: stupid, but interesting
11:01 def: with pawn, something like counting house coppersmith would have been interesting.
11:02 ARTjoMS: that was my initial plan... but you vetoed pawn... :( :)
11:03 def: disconnects ftw..
11:04 def: you definitely need another copper ;)
11:04 ARTjoMS: why?
11:04 ARTjoMS: i got coppersmith
11:04 def: would be even more fun, 8 coppers -> province
11:08 def: see, there you would have needed one more copper.^^
11:12 ARTjoMS: that was no less no more than birthday present
11:13 ARTjoMS: and you dont even thnak me
11:13 def: ?
11:15 def: what are you talking about?
11:15 ARTjoMS: last game
11:16 def: yeah...I won because we chose different tactics and mine wasn't too complicated, so?
11:16 ARTjoMS: i took clearly inferior strat knowing it, and you got free win
11:16 ARTjoMS: and you dont even thank me
11:16 def: lol
11:17 def: that's the most stupid thing I heard in a long time
11:17 def: nobody forced you to do so
11:17 ARTjoMS: that is the most afwul thing i have heard
11:17 ARTjoMS: when someone gives you present
11:17 ARTjoMS: and you dont say thank yuo.. just because they didnt have to do it
11:18 def: did I ask for a present? do I even have birthday? no. Plus, you started being rude in leaving immediately without saying anything.
11:18 ARTjoMS: rude lol.
11:19 ARTjoMS: leaving is rude?
11:19 ARTjoMS: you didnt say thank you
11:19 ARTjoMS: that is rude
11:34 def: and a lucked megaturn at the end didn't even help you. no gg, since you played shitty again, and get rid of your mental illness soon.
11:34 def has returned to the lobby.

Good flames :) Maybe i got ''mental illness'', but this guy is definitely smoking something illegal.

That's exactly the kind of player I do avoid.  If people start insulting me in random ways I consider that quite funny, but I really, really despise the bad loser.

Apparently some ''good winners'' just can't admit that they got lucky. I suspect it is ego thing: huge ego + stubbornness = can't face truth, so they find it easier to take truth as insult so that their ego doesn't get hurt.

18:35 blueblimp: yeah that is nice, I hate it when it hits only copper
18:35 ARTjoMS: and buying silver in same turn
18:35 ARTjoMS: chances of that lucky very small
18:36 ARTjoMS: no gg
18:36 blueblimp: lol
18:36 ARTjoMS: pure luck

Hardly someone to avoid.  He was just a little bitter.

What?

If my opponent gets unlucky and i get free win i cooperate with him rather make a hero of myself like you did.

Thank you for posting games.

Some more comments about games.
Game 1. Curses were 6-4. I should have gotten salvager faster.

Game 3. After 1st shuffle it was clear that i won't be able to match in engine making so i went green early, didn't really want to take province that early, but what else you can do with 8 money and one buy. Too bad silk road split 4-4.

Game 4. Don't know how i won that, it felt like actions collided alot and it was either 7 or 5 in the beginning, wasn't delighted to take 3rd ghost ship early, but at least i knew what to do when i draw expand -ghost ship.

Game 5. Going 2nd maybe wasn't that bad, but i didn't feel like going BM. Though a second about smugglers-gardens, but assumed it would be too slow. I thought chapel would make library-warehouse-money a lot faster+you can set chapel aside, but after turn 3: Chapel; Silver;Copper;Copper;Copper it was obviously over. I really don't think my strategy was inferior. Just played a solitaire game with that combo and maybe i got lucky but it was 4 provinces in 11 turns and 5th on 13.

Game 6. It was clear that this will be engine deck, now looking back i would probably open with potion as it is fastest reliable way how to set up engine. I was surprised how successful potion move from my opponent was knowing there is ghost ship around. Didn't felt all that bad about chances to win until realized my opponent can draw entire deck.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Taking a $5 card over an early gold
« on: August 26, 2011, 07:32:01 pm »
I really think apprentice

I figure if your $6 came from 4 coppers and a +$2 action, mint is a good call. I don’t really think I’d really want to go for apprentice, because it’s not really good for trashing coppers, so you might as well take the gold now and just get your apprentice next shuffle.
Exactly.

So i had an opportunity to play vs. tat and did ask him some questions.

me: you usually don't play high ranked players, why so?
tat: coz there are few top players when i appear
me: they say that you reject their invitations
tat: i do have preferences over cards, so i dun play some card set

If your engine is good enough to draw them both and opponent knows what he is doing then it is most probably better to play fortune teller first.

Sea hag-silver opening stands out.

Turn 4&6 bishops were really big mistakes.

You should ignore bishop, goons and nobles entirely unless very late in the game

44
The idea is that the Village gives you the possibility not to draw the next card, which in some circonstances is actually the good play.

uh.huh.puh.

Silver also gives you ''possibility not to draw card'' and increases average money per card (unless it is bigger than 2, so this is way more likely to work in colony games).

Village gives you possibility to draw card. This could work if you have bad cards in hand and want to force reshuffle (no cards in draw pile),

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How many cards in a strategy?

A follow-up question: as the strategies get built around more cards, what do you do to reduce your dependence on shuffle luck for these combos to hit?

Your questions are very general, each game and situation should be examined separately.

Luck is part of this game and being able to assess risk is one of the best qualities a player can have.

46
MB just improves in 3-4p games, because opponent on your right might have played MB already and other opponents might have already discarded their curses. In 2p games witches somewhat somewhat have an edge, especially with 5-2 starting split and witch-nothing starting buy. Those coppers you get from MB are not that bad.

Torturer needs +actions, preferably village, but it will be too slow vs other curse attacks.

Familiar is a card that i recently have started to hate and think that it is too much luck based, it might be too slow vs other curse attacks, but not always.

Sea hag usually is a solid opener, but it feels to me like it increases variance quite a bit, not only your key card might be discarded from top, but also there is increased chance that one might not be able to buy a silver after opponents sea hag turn. There is quite a big difference between Curse -Copper-Copper-Copper-Estate and Curse-Copper-Copper-Estate-Estate.

Dominion Articles / Re: An Endgame Primer
« on: August 06, 2011, 11:48:25 am »
A lot of obvious and trivial stuff.

I will just add that in common case where your buying power consists of money your last two shuffles probably have bigger impact on outcome than your 2nd shuffle, getting early gold might help you to accelerate advantage, but it won't do much if your money per turns in endgame are: (13 4 4) or (7 7 7) and your opponent hits (8 8 5). Or when you reshuffle your ~25 card deck and it matters in which turn you get your 8 coin, especially this is true as to who will get his savager, remodel, forge, expand, smithy, envoy etc in his hand first. What i wanted to say that there is a lot of luck involved in endgame. Really, everyone can do envoy+BM and better players don't have that much of advantage there.

WanderingWinder, i think it is more interesting as to when start buying provinces. As i remember from simulations for smithy+money tactics is better to wait until you have gold or two rather than buy province on 3/4/5 turn. With vault this probably isn't true.

Another interesting thing is what to do with 2 buys (wharves, council room) and 6-7 coin, go for gold or 2 silvers? -- gold will probably be better if your average money per card in your deck is greater than one, but this might change when we start to go green.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Anti-Point-Counter option?
« on: August 05, 2011, 04:44:02 pm »
If point counter appears at the top it is fine, but when someone invites me and i have to look at their status to find out that in game point counter will be used then it is really annoying.

I have experienced more annoying things though : i invited some 35+ player and when game started it appears that point counter will be used although there was nothing about it on his status.  And for some reason ''!disable'' also wasn't there, just ''!status''.

49
Next time you play him ask him why does he chooses opponents so. He seems to be a very good player and would be near top anyway.
