So when will you be willing to buy a Copper with Merchant Guild in play to get an extra coin token? My guess is just slightly more often than you would with Goons in play, which isn't very often. Interestingly, with Goons you're more willing to do it when the game is closer to over, whereas with Merchant Guild, it doesn't work as well... at least, doing it if you think it is your last turn is pointless (though doesn't hurt you either).

Masterpiece is so cool!

Merchant Guild - I think this will be awesome in giant Goons engines :)

Candlesticker is boring.

Advisor is Worse-than-Lab, I don't think it is good as it is engine card and opponent can easily disrupt your engine when you use it.

Soothsayer - do you draw a card too?

Plaza should really be 3, but it is finish this way. I guess it works in village+draw engines as you can discard extra coppers to have more money for worse turns.

Taxmen - better than Mine, I guess. That doesn't say much.

Stonemason - you want cheap engine parts? He's your guy!

Plaza at $3 would be strictly better than Village.

Here's the next one:

Name the 5 single kingdom card piles, that no matter which other 9 kingdom card piles are present, can make a player get down to 0 cards in deck, discard and hand.
Knights, Bishop, Island, Black Market, Governor.

Ok. I should also have had "No matter which cards are in the Black Market deck".
The others are 4 of the 5 I was thinking of, so there's still 1 missing.

lol at Governor... because it needs to be played A LOT for it to work. Say it's a Kingdom that has cards at every cost (including Poor House for $1, and Platinum for $9. And Peddlers or 3-player game for more than 8 $8-cost cards) and you started with Shelters.

In order to leave yourself with 0 cards in play, in deck, and in hand... your opponent needs to play Governor 97 times.

I'm not sure I understand the puzzle. Is it just asking for Kingdoms where 5/3 will not be the best move? Easy... any Kingdom where there are no $5s, or not good $5s on the board. I disagree that TM+TM will be a good opening... 70% of the time you have may as well have just bought 2 Estates to open the game. Sure they may collide later; they may not. If there's good support for them, then open with that support. I'd think Warehouse/TM would be better than TM/TM with Warehouse later.

He's looking specifically for kingdoms, with Baker, that you would either open 6/2 or 4/4, not 5/3, and not anything less (Double Ambassador, etc). Obviously this can't be a kingdom with no $5s, since Baker is on the board.

Oh right, forgot that Baker was itself a $5. But we don't know yet whether it counts as a strong $5. It may very well be that when it's the only $5, you may almost never want to open with it.

$4 stops you from opening with two of them, for example.

Edge case: Baker!

this will probably be the first remodel variant which in the german version has not ***bau in its name

remodel - umbau
upgrade - anbau
rebuild - neubau
remake - nachbau
develop - aufbau
expand - ausbau
butcher - Metzger/Fleischer/Schlachter?

This is great illustration of why German is such a pain to learn. Anyone (non-German) want to memorize these for tomorrow and try to remember which is which?!

Hm, German is a hard language to learn, but not being able to remember which one is which has nothing to do about the language. I'm German and I can't remember which one is which either.

I think it has a lot to do with the language... not sure why Joel limited his challenge to non-German speakers... seems the trick is that all 6 of them have very similar-sounding names, much more so than their English counterparts.

Thief is good in 4 player games against strategies that both rely on treasures and trash junk,
That's a bit harsh. Thief can be good in 4-player games, OR against strategies that rely on key treasures, OR against heavy trashing.
I think NMF is closer to the truth

4 Player Thief-Gardens is actually pretty strong.  Kind of like Beggar-Gardens, but you trade off a guaranteed 3 cards for a chance at Silver / Gold, and attacking your opponents.

Also the Thief in your hand doesn't give you any money to buy the gardens that turn, so you'll be needing that Silver/Gold badly to afford the Gardens in the slog.

I think that's Thief's biggest downfall. If it produced even $1 it would be useful in a decent percentage of games. In fact, that's my Scout fix, too. +$1.

How powerful would Thief be if it put one of the stolen treasures in your hand?  (Like, set each trashed treasure from each player aside, and at the end choose one to put in your hand and the others in the trash.)  Seems like it would make it extremely good in games where people trash some Copper.

On the Menagerie-Ruins engine, calling it that makes it sound like it's viable to buy Ruins for the purpose of activating Menagerie more, which I think I'd false. But Menagerie is a good defense to Ruins, and Fairgrounds is a great reason not to Loot someone at all.
If somebody really gets the idea to buy out the Ruins to activate their Menageries, I want to see the game log, that sounds good.

I did it, but it was in real life: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=8051.0

I've downgraded my assessment slightly, because I realize that even if it hits every time, it's not as good as +2 cards +2 actions. With +2 cards +2 actions, you are free to spend those actions on any action cards you have in your hand. With Herald, one of your 2 actions is forced to be used on whatever action card happened to be revealed. If that card is non-terminal, then I suppose it doesn't really matter. But if it was terminal, +2 actions would let you play 2 other terminals from your hand, which perhaps you'd rather play that the one that was on top of your deck. Then again, this only matters if you have more terminals than you can play.

Also you can't topdeck actions to reveal with it unless you pay at least $11.

Edge cases: You played Outpost; you have Scheme in play; you have Watchtower in hand; you have Royal Seal in play; you have Herbalist in play; you buy a Nomad Camp after buying this. Also, if you buy this from the Black Market.

EDIT, well, Wandering Minstrel is probably better.  Maybe.

Late to the party, stuck in meetings. I haven't read through this thread yet, but this just sounds insanely strong to me. There's a lot of decks where this will be +2 cards +2 actions more often than not. For $4! Add in the on-buy ability... I don't see how this isn't going to be a crazy-strong $4 card.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: When you can spend your tokens
« on: June 06, 2013, 03:25:02 pm »
Why would it matter for Poor House?  It's not like you're literally exchanging tokens for Treasure cards - they're just increasing your fielded coins this turn.

It matters with Poor House because Poor House has a lower bound on it's -coin effect.  For example, if have 6 treasure in hand and played a poor house, you would get +4 coin and then -4 coin.  If you played two coin tokens, and then played poor house with 6 treasure in hand, you would get +4 coin and then -6 coin.

Of course, in the end, you end up with +0 coin from Poor House.  But in the second scenario you don't have those two coin tokens during your buy phase.

Right, though it also only matters if you for some really odd reason chose to spend the coin tokens before playing Poor House. There may be another card that would be better if you could do so.

Black Market.
Also you can't do it after buying a card.

Oops, I knew about Black Market as well; but forgot to mention it.

And I did quote "before buying cards." But why? What would be different if you could buy a card, then cash in a coin token? I'm thinking that there's probably some sort of "while this is in play, when you buy a card, take a token" type thing... that would explain the rule.

I find it interesting that Donald would say that you can exchange your tokens for money "in your buy phase, before buying cards." I wonder why? Right now Poor house is the only edge case I can think of where it matters at all... wouldn't the rule be easier to write if it were just "at any time during your turn"? Makes me think that maybe there will be a Guilds card that will make it matter.

Wasn't sure about the price. It's worth noting that the tokens can't be spent this turn, since they have to be cashed in before you start buying things.

Maybe drop the +card and keep it at $4? My main intent was to make a way to monetize the excess buys that can pile up in some engines.

I was mistaken about when you could use the tokens. But I still think this card simply gives way too much of a power boost to cards like Market Square, Hamlet, and Pawn.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Possible card ideas

Not quite strictly better - the coin tokens are delayed a turn, since I think you still have to play all your treasures and coin tokens before buying anything. So on this turn, it's +1 card, +1 action, and get the two coin tokens, and on the next turn you can spend them. Still really good though.

I don't see how they are delayed a turn. Unless there's a rule that I haven't seen that says that you can only use coin tokens during the part of your buy phase that you play treasures. The rule as mentioned by Donald that I've seen is that you can use them during your buy phase. So you buy a coin token, then immediately cash it in.

*EDIT* Re-read Donald's first preview, I see now that he said "before buying cards."

Action - $4

+1 Card
+1 Action
+2 Buys

During your Buy phase this turn, you may buy Coin tokens for $0 each.

Nice idea, but to cheap imho. Play it every turn and you have a strictly better market for $4. At $5 or with a on-gain penalty or something it's probably fine

At $5 it's still strictly better than Market. Not sure what you mean by "play it every turn." The turn you play it, if you want it could exactly a Market. Or it could be an activated Conspirator. Or you can just save up coin tokens. Combine this with Market Square, Hamlet, Pawn, or any other cheap +buy, and it's completely insane.

I would be very surprised about that.
You make the decsions for your opponents. There's no reason why you can't make him use coin tokens.

Absolutely. Pretty much the only way I can think of to word the coin token rules to not allow a Possessed player to use them would be to specifically mention Possession in the rules, which just wouldn't happen.

Remodel for $5 whose virtual +$2 can be saved AND increased by other coin tokens.  Sounds strong to me, especially if you have a Baker or something else to get tokens from.

First instinct is that this will be very strong if there's another coin-taker out there; a little strong if there isn't. Just replacing a card with a same-cost card and getting 2 coins will be great. How often do we use Remodel or even Expand to replace Province with Province?
