Aside from concealing how many Coppers you have, I can think of one semi-realistic situation and one pretty unlikely situation.

EDIT: OK, you guys are way more creative than I am.

I think this question's been asked before.  First thing that comes to mind is you have extra actions and Library/Watchtower in hand and you know that's going to get you better stuff than Coppers, so you're just playing the CH to increase your card draw.

Oh, another possibility: you want to draw just enough to avoid decrementing the multiple P Stones in your hand.  You must be a shark at counting cards.

I can also imagine really, really weird situations where you Golemed into the CH and a forced trasher, let's say a heavily pumped-up Trade Route, and your hand is otherwise empty, so you'd rather Trade Route into thin air, so as to keep your Gardens big.  Don't know why one would build such a deck, though.

To discard or not to discard?  That is the question.

Surely you would play the Trade Route and then the CH.

D'oh, yeah that would be better.

You have two actions, and only Counting House and Trade Route in hand.  You need the coins from Trade Route to buy something.  You have one copper in your discard.  If you play Trade Route first, you must trash the Counting House.  If you play Counting House first and take the copper, you trash the copper with Trade Route.  If you play Counting House and take no copper, you have nothing to trash but you still get to use the Trade Route.[/quote]

When not playing online, you extract just enough to buy the stuff you want to buy, since you don't want to waste time fishing out extra coppers that you don't have the Buys to use.

You have only four cards left in your draw and discard piles and want to play a harvest next.

But the $1 lost from Harvest would be accounted for by having an extra Copper in hand (or more than 1 Copper, in which case Harvest wasn't even going to get you as much money anyway). I guess if you tag on "and you want to buy a Grand Market", it works.

Or play more than one Harvest, or KC/TR it.

You draw all your coppers but one, and fire a loan at the last treasure in your deck.

You already have enough in hand to buy a Grand Market and another 5 cost card. You consider buying Inn, however, you don't know if what you have in your discard pile is worth buying an Inn for, or if you should just take a Duchy.

Maybe something with Hunting Party and not wanting to cause an untimely reshuffle.

When you're going to play Contraband but don't want the opponent to be certain that you have enough $ for a province/colony. (e.g. if you have 5 coppers in discard, and a three card hand of contraband/platinum/counting house, looking crestfallen and picking up 3 coppers will more likely induce your opponent to block platinum or gold instead of colony.)

When you are going to play remake or steward to trash a copper but don't want to run completely out of money because you are going for some crazy calculated strategy where your treasures add up exactly to $8.

You want to buy a Mint and don't need all your copper to do it.  (Counting House doesn't work well with Mint, but you might have gotten the Counting House from a Swindler or Jester, or Jestered a platinum that you want to mint, or you might just want the Mint as a 15th card for Fairgrounds.)

You are possessing another player, and you are playing another card which will force a reshuffle after the Counting House.  You use the Counting House to get only as many coppers as you need, then the other card to force the reshuffle, and give him a deck with the Counting House missing the reshuffle but most of the copper still shuffled in.

You don't need to PLAY the coppers you pull with Counting House, so this distinction doesn't really work.

Anon79 presumably has the real reason it's written this way :)

Admittedly farfetched, but:

You Golemed into a CH and a card drawer.  Your draw pile is empty so the card draw will trigger a reshuffle this turn.  You already have enough $$ for a province buy, so having more coppers won't help you this turn.  The rest of your discard pile is green, so leaving the extra coppers in your discard pile for the reshuffle will improve the quality of your next hand(s).

A few Copper mixed in with greens? I'd rather take all of the Coppers into hand to get through that horrible shuffle ASAP.
