Rules for Lancelots (Variant #1):

Set Up
Use both Lancelot character cards included in the promo in place of one Good and One Evil character card.
Build a Loyalty deck of 5 cards –three “No Change” (blank) cards and two “Switch Allegiance” cards.  Shuffle and place the Loyalty deck adjacent to the Score Tableau.
Reveal Phase:
The Evil Lancelot does notopen his eyes, but instead extends his thumb so that he is known to the other agents of Evil.
Play:
Gameplay proceeds as normal, with the following exceptions: At the beginning of the 3rd round and at the very start of each subsequent round flip one card from the Loyalty deck. If the card is “No Change”, there is no change of allegiance and play continues as normal.
If the “Switch Allegiance” card is drawn, Lancelot has had a change of heart.  The two Lancelot players secretly switch their allegiances.  This switch applies to all aspects of game play including victory conditions and rules regarding playing Quest cards.  They do not swap or show their Character cards.   
It is possible that Lancelot will switch allegiance once, twice or even not at all during a game.

Rules for Excalibur:

He who controls Excalibur has tremendous power, for Good or Evil.  Choose wisely, and use cautiously lest the forces of Evil be strengthened.
Excalibur can be added to the game as an optional player power.  Excalibur gives a member of the Quest Team the ability to alter the outcome of the Quest by switching another player’s played Quest card.
During the Team Building Phase, Excalibur is assigned by the Leader to one of the players on the Team by giving that player both a Team token and the Excalibur card.  The Leader cannot assign Excalibur to himself.
During the Quest Phase, Team Members select their Quest card and play it face down in front of themselves so that it is clear which player played what card.  Before collecting the played Quest Cards, the player with Excalibur may tell any one other player to switch their Quest cards (the unplayed card becomes the played card). 
After switching the cards, the player with Excalibur looks at the switched card (the card that was originally played). He thus knows which card that player chose, and if his switch was beneficial or harmful to the Quest.   The Leader then collects and shuffles the played Quest cards before revealing as normal.
Example:  Ron, the Leader, entrusts Sarah to both be on the Team and wield Excalibur.  He also chooses himself and Pat to be on the Team.  After the Team is approved, Ron, Pat and Sarah play their Quest cards in front of themselves.  Sarah elects to use Excalibur and switches the Quest card that Pat had played.  Sarah then looks at the Quest card that Pat originally played (Quest Success) and she knows that her switch has doomed the Quest to Fail.  The Leader collects and shuffles the Quest cards before revealing two Success and one Fail cards.

Note:
1. Good Lancelot and Evil Lancelot are role names, regardless of alignment. If they switch alignment, the player with the role Good Lancelot is now aligned with Evil, and the player with the role Evil Lancelot is now aligned with Good. Whichever one is currently aligned with Good must succeed missions, while the one currently aligned with Evil may choose. No extra information will be given to Merlin or Mordred if and when they swap.

For clarity's sake, please specify which player holds Excalibur even for the 2-person missions.
3. Votes are to be sent to me by PM. The Leader for each proposal auto-accepts by default. If you wish to reject a mission you have proposed, please send your vote immediately. To help me keep track of votes, please specify the Mission and Proposal number in the heading of your message.
4. The game will have 48-hour proposal deadlines and 24-hour vote/mission deadlines. If you are holding Excalibur and you know ahead of time what you wish to do, you may submit your Excalibur action along with your mission card. If you choose not to, I will announce when I have received all the mission cards, and you will have 24 hours to submit your Excalibur action, either in the thread or by PM. There is no penalty for missing a deadline other than the possibility that I will search for a replacement if you miss deadlines repeatedly or for an extended period without explanation. Please do your best to meet the deadlines.
5. Once a valid proposal has been made, it cannot be changed. You may change your vote up until I announce the result, and if you are Evil you may change your mission card up until I announce that I have received all mission cards, or the result of the mission is announced.
6. If 3 missions succeed, Mordred will have 48 hours to assassinate a player. This can be changed up until the deadline, unless you indicate that you've made your final choice. All players may discuss freely during this time, and I will reveal nothing about roles or alignments.
7. This is a difficult game. Each role is challenging to play. I recommend you avoid falling into auto-pilot and keenly remember which roles are present.

No. When the leader proposed a mission, he gives Excalibur to someone else on the mission - not himself. They can then either use it or not. There's no limit on how many times it can be used, other than 5 as there are 5 missions.

Sorry, yes that was unclear.

Whenever you propose a mission, you must choose someone on the mission other than yourself to have Excalibur. This choice is made before the mission is voted for, and is part of what everyone is voting for.
So whenever a mission is approved, someone will have Excalibur. Once all the mission cards have been played, the person holding Excalibur must choose to either not use it, or use it on someone, seeing the card they played and swapping it for the one the didn't play.

I'll update the OP with details on how to propose missions etc before the game starts. I haven't sent PMs yet because I realised Monday is probably further away for you than it is for me.

So...Excalibur. I have no idea how this card will play. Initial thought is that the threat of Excalibur is more powerful than the actual power is Excalibur.

My initial thought was that I have no idea how Excalibur will/should be utilized haha.

My second thought was this:

Well, based on discussion in the last game, it seems quite probable that even if there is scum on the first mission, they'll pass it through anyway. So what would be the point of using Excalibur if it's liable to flip a 'pass' to a 'fail' anyway? If anything it seems like a good excuse for scum to "steal" the first mission and play it off as an accident. So I don't really see a good reason to use it M1. Plus it gives us collectively a while to ponder/discuss strategy haha.

Thoughts on these thoughts? Just impressions really and I'd love to hear what you guys think.

here's the deal with excalibur:

it makes it possible for a mission with two good guys to fail. This is bad. So I think we should agree that if you use excalibur, at least for this mission, you are a spy.

using excalibur as a good guy for this mission is only good if the other player is a spy and failed the mission. This is unlikely. And is an excuse for a spy to use it, and still maintain that both players are good.

So I will assume that anyone who uses excalibur for this mission is a bad guy, and will not use excalibur if I get it.

I also think it's a bad idea to give someone Excalibur with an agenda (as in, hey liopoil, I'm giving you Excalibur and you should use it). Spies will use that information way more than we can.

One good thing is that double fails this game are much more likely. No one knows modred and there's a chance that on m3 and m4, both very crucial missions, neither spy knows the other.

Some theory thoughts --

No one should ever, ever, ever claim their role (prior to mission 5). This is specifically referring to the Lancelots, since Merlin and Percival would never claim. Don't claim. Just don't do it. Don't use it as an example of "Yeah, you were right with your read earlier, but now I'm good!" This gives scum a 50/50 shot of winning even if three missions are passed.

Also, don't try to deduce other's roles in thread. Keep in mind, you have different information than what Modred has -- but he still has a decent amount, and will be able to read into our thoughts. Saying "I think player X is Good Lancelot!" gives away a lot of information, and if you're trying to fool Modred, chances are you are going to fool your teammates more. I don't think there should be anything more than good/bad. People trying to fit someone else in as Lancelot gives away the fact that they're not Lancelot -- I think we should avoid this.

One thing -- I think if we get to mission 5, and Evil Lancelot is now good, he should absolutely claim. Mordred already knows who he is, so he's not narrowing down the Merlin pool anymore by claiming.

Does anybody have any M1 ideas that don't involve randomly voting for randos and then rejecting most teams that don't contain you? And then it likely goes to the hammer, and quite possibly passes regardless of roster?

Not that there's anything inherently wrong with that. It's sort of RVS-ish and maybe you can derive some insight from the interactions. But I was wondering if anyone had any better ideas.

Well, yeah.

Taking a look at the proposal order, it looks like liopoil is last to propose. Meaning, if the trend that almost always happens in Resistance games (rejecting M1 proposals until Proposal 5) continues, he'll be the one in charge. I, so far, am OK with that. There's a lot of variables in this game with the RMM nature of it and Exacalibur that I don't think M1 will matter too much, but I could be wrong.

I was initially going to decline it, but thought about what TA said. Why wouldn't have liopoil rejected it? He's the 5th proposer and rejecting my mission would have increased the chance of him proposing. So I accepted it. It's not super likely I'll be included in P3, P4, or P5, so I was alright accepting this one. If you only Decline missions you aren't on, it ensures that the 5th proposal will go through. Of course it depends with all these PRs, and I don't expect people to explain every single one of their votes because of it, but it's something to keep in mind.

Walrus is my top resistanceread, so I have no qualms about that. However, I do have qualms about liopoil being on the mission.

Yo, I was just musing a little bit about the Lancelots and I thought I'd share.

Here's the breakdown for the various allegiance-swapping possibilities. Correct me if I'm wrong:

1.) Allegiances never swap

(3/5 * 2/4 * 1/3) = 1/10

2.) Allegiances swap once

(2/5 * 3/4 * 2/3) = 2/10
(3/5 * 2/4 * 2/3) = 2/10
(3/5 * 2/4 * 2/3) = 2/10
Total: 6/10

3.) Allegiances swap twice

(2/5 * 1/4 * 3/3) = 1/10
(2/5 * 3/4 * 1/3) = 1/10
(3/5 * 2/4 * 1/3) = 1/10
Total: 3/10

So there is a 60% chance that their alignment will end up opposite of what it started, assuming it goes to five missions. Which I guess means, evolutionarily speaking the Lancelots should initially behave as if they are on the opposite team. But practically speaking, it's not a huge margin, who knows to what extent the Lancelots have thought this through, and also my reasoning may be crude or plain wrong haha. I know I have neglected some finer points such as other power roles, and the fact that the game may end before they switch.

Maybe this isn't very useful, but I thought it was interesting at least!

All right. This whole situation of loyalty switching and crazy swords makes my head spin, to say nothing of the extent to which any of it should be discussed. I think I agree with the idea that Lancelot reads should be kept to a minimum, but it does feel a bit like an elephant in the room. And then Excalibur is like its own little minigame.

Also, something to remember -- at this moment, Mordred has no idea who his partner is. And the partner has no idea who Mordred is. So there's a MUCH higher chance of a double fail at this point.

This is wrong. 3/4 chance of no switch after this time * 2/3 chance of no switch next time given no switch this time = 6/12 chance of no more switches (no chance of 2 more switches). So it's exactly 50-50.

I just wanted to get a reaction from everybody to see where everybody stands right now. Especially after the Lancelot switcheroo. Plus I needed to buy some time to figure out what I wanted to do haha.

I have to say I think my biggest town read is Twisted right now. He seems like he's taking an earnest, active role in the game.

I was also considering mail-mi, because of our successful first mission...maybe that's the best thing to go by in these tumultuous times. And his attitude seems chipper enough.

Arch and lio are more in muddled/scummy territory for me right now. lio, your reaction to my request right now seemed slightly off to me. Remember last game when I asked you and yuma to chime in, and I found yuma's answer scummy for being sort of aloof and disinterested? That's sort of the impression I got from you just now. Discussion is pro-town, and I just wanted a quote for the daily papers. Arch is sort of in and out, but that's rather in character for him. I do think he acted a bit scummily in the aftermath of M2 though.

...or rather, was bad at the time. Or even possibly good, but was anticipating breaking bad. The Lancelots really throw a wrench in things, so I'm even less confident in my "knowledge" than I normally would be.

PPE: I was thinking about nominating mail-mi for my proposal as well in 3.2. I'd rather have had you and mail-mi get the mission than anything with lio or Arch on it. I'm glad it worked out.

That was then though, and there's been another alignment switch, which leaves me more befuddled than ever. I'll reread and think about it.

Uh so the way I think of it is Good Lancelot and Evil Lancelot are the character names, and they do not swap, only their alignments swap. So GL could end up Evil, but his name is still Good Lancelot. Maybe that's confusing for some people, I don't know.
So Mordred knows who Evil Lancelot is, and if Evil Lancelot ends up Good then he doesn't know his teammate, Good Lancelot. So Merlin and Percival should both claim Good Lancelot (who is Evil).

I never really did much... I didn't know what my motives were! all I really wanted was to get myself in a position to be on missions once I knew my alignment... which didn't work out.

I knew you were Good Lancelot as soon as I figured out Walrus was Percival, but I think that if I put Walrus/TA/Liopoil M4, it would have been too obvious. I was comfortable putting Walrus/TA/Mail-mi, knowing that I had the hammer for M5 to put the correct team.

Yeah, I feel like it's hard for the Lancelots to figure out what they're doing if they don't know what alignment they'll end up as. If you've read the Lancelot rules, the 2nd suggested variant fixes this by having all swaps public at the start of the game, so everyone knows which will be which at all times. This could be interesting, but I feel like it takes away from the mystery of the Lancelots. A third way that I came up with that I'd like to try out some time is for only the Lancelots to know when they'll swap. So they'll both know what alignment they'll be when, but no one else will.

I was actually quite sure of that last mission based on the following reasoning:

M1 means very little because it's M1.
M2, I knew Twisted and I are good, so I know Arch is evil.
M3, mail-mi succeeds. I didn't think that at that point he would do a decoy pass as scum. So I figured he must be good Lancelot at that point. And then the allegiances switched back.

In fact, when Twisted was talking about Excalibur right before M4, I was like SHUT UP, don't make mail-mi suspicious! Lol. So I had to try to play it cool.

Twisted just seemed too...obvious as Merlin. Like that "Well mail-mi is always scum" Or something to that effect was a big reason why I figured you weren't Merlin, but you were! I also figured out liopoil was my secret partner because he rejected the same mission I did post-Lancelot switch. And Walrus accepted, even though he wasn't on the mission. So I figured he must've known something about mail-mi's alignment 'cause he wanted MM on the mission after the switch. But really nice play, you had me fooled.

I think a problem that this game can have, particularly with Avalon roles, is that because everyone has something to hide, it can be hard to generate discussion. In Mafia, generally the game gets to the point where Town members can put every single thought they have out there, whereas here everyone has a filter. Maybe the way to get past that is for people to better learn strategies etc of the game so people can lead discussion without giving away whether they're Merlin.
