"You may gain a Foo. If not, gain a Bar. If not, gain a Foo"

You have to gain either a Foo or Bar unless both piles are empty

I already suggested that on the first page, but the problem is that it can cause you to gain two Foos depending on how you read the second "if [you do] not".

It could go like this though:

You may gain a Foo.  If you do not, gain a Bar.  If you do not gain either, gain a Foo.

You may gain a Foo or a Bar. Repeat this until you have gained a card.

What if both are empty? Infinite loop.

You may gain a Foo or a Bar. If there are no Foos or Bars in the supply, stop carrying out this effect. Repeat this until you have gained a card.

If all Dominion players were also computer programmers, this would be perfect.  ;)

I think the best up to now were these:

"Gain a card that is a Foo or a Bar." (Workshop)
"Choose a Foo or a Bar in the supply and gain it." (Band of Misfits)

Edited because of terrible orthography.

I think the best up to now where these:

"Gain a card that is a Foo or a Bar." (Workshop)
"Choose a Foo or a Bar in the supply and gain it." (Band of Misfits)
So, for the card idea itself it would be like this:

Old Crone
Action-Attack $4
+1 action
+1 buy
Each other player chooses a treasure in their hand or a Curse in the supply. He gains all the Curses chosen this way, you gain all the treasures chosen this way.

In three-player games, how can both of my opponents each gain both of the chosen Curses?

I refuse to believe that three-player games exist!

What was wrong with the suggested,

Name a card that is either Foo or Bar and is in the supply.  Gain that card.

?

Nothing. But it uses both the workshop and the Band of Misfits wording ("a card that is X") and ("name a X in the supply") and therefore can be said with less words.

Well, "Gain either a Foo or a Bar that is in the supply" would work as well.

Edit: Oh it was already said, I seemed to have missed some posts while reading.
