Say that when goko was first implemented, instead of giving you the whole base set for free and selling packs based on expansions, you had to buy or earn each card individually. With what you know about all 205 cards, which ones would you avoid buying or only buy for completionism.

I'd buy all of Guilds and Dark Ages and some individual cards I suck at playing (such as Goons, Nobles, Embassy, Scrying Pool and Fools' Gold).

Mostly the snoozefest bad cards. I have a spot in my heart for some bad cards, but e.g. the marginal value of "you get to see harvest in a small fraction of your games" is small to me. I would probably buy bureaucrat out of irrational love, but I wouldnt pay for adventurer, even though I love to buy it on the rare boards it is good.

Beyond that:

Tournament! That was easy.

Spy. New players overbuy it and then it makes their turns last forever.

Scrying Pool. Same problem except worse because it's such a key card.

I would not avoid any card. However, I think it would be smart for Goko to sell individual cards for $1 a piece in addition to the expansion packs. The reason I say this is that this allows people with small budgets to buy a card or two at a time and eventually if they buy card-by-card, Goko will actually make more money this way than through the actual expansion packs. It also allows people to avoid owning cards they don't like such as Possesion and Tournament.

In all honesty, I think threads like this are just going to promote negativity.

On Goko I would buy everything. If I bought physical cards separately, I would leave out those, that take lots of time to resolve (Hunting Party and Scrying Pool for sure, maybe something else as well).

I'm shocked that the word "Rebuild" has not appeared in this thread yet.

Hamlet. It's just sooo slow to play it, and it's very frustrating if you unvoluntarily discard smth for +Buy.

Knights. I have not enjoyed a game with Knights yet.

Possession. I do not like the card and what it does to players' strategies when it's viable.

Black Market -- oh wait! I've already not purchased it when given the option! I actually have Gokoins in my account unused because I refuse to buy Black Market and have it show up when I create a random Pro game. :)

To economize I might buy Scavenger but not Chancellor and Vagrant but not Scout. I might even go with Thief and Pirate Ship but not Taxman (I play enough 3+ player games where Thief and Pirate Ship are exciting much more often).

Cards I wouldn't bother paying for:

Shelters
Scout
Thief
Harvest
Fortune Teller
Adventurer

A bit more debatable, but still probably not worth the money, space, nor time:

Pearl Diver
Wishing Well
Walled Village
Spy

Cards I would deliberately avoid buying:

Ill Gotten Gains
Rebuild
Duke
Tournament
Swindler
Possession

Also probably wouldn't buy, because I find them annoying:

Cultist
Advisor

Cards I would think twice about but still buy:

Scrying Pool
King's Court
Black Market  (can't really justify this, but I enjoy the card)

Interesting -- why not Duke? I didn't realize Duke elicited strong opinions either way. (The card I mean, obviously everyone hates the college basketball team.)

I find tournament really fun. Definitely wouldn't skip it if I was buying cards.

Tournament can be fun, it's also really stupidly swingy. One kind of negates the other.

Duke is as dumb as IGG, it just becomes a buy rush.

I definitely sigh whenever losing the Duchy split in a Duke game. I don't hate the card, but that split is so easy to lose as second player even if you're playing decently, and you're at a huge disadvantage if you do lose it--then need to play out the rest of the game anyway.

Rebuild, Scout and Woodcutter. I own physical copies of them, and while i always veto the first, i never see somebody buying the other two. Dominion without Chancellor wouldn't be the same for me, though.

I think Tournament is the only card I can think of, for it's swingy-ness.  I don't feel too great even after I win with it.  Possession comes close, but I usually can use/make the other person not able to use it.

Moat

I can't tell if this is a meta-joke or not.

But now that you mention it, I wouldn't be too sad buying Lighthouse but not Moat.

I do like how Lighthouse becomes even more powerful as a bane.
