Topic: Learning Agricola! (Game Started) (Read 26430 times)

So there has been expressed interest in learning how to play the great strategy game that is Agricola. Whether you say Agri-cola, like some weird manure-flavored sparkly beverage or all in one syllable, as I believe it is supposed to be said, we don't care here! (I myself am partial to manure-flavored beverages).

SO! We will have to decided what version of the game we play. We can play the family version of the game, which is recommended to start with, or we can jump straight into an advanced game with minor improvements and occupations. If you want to play, please post in the thread with your preferred game settings. Also, go make an account at http://www.boiteajeux.net/ and post your username there along with your /in. If there is enough interest, it could be an all beginner game with me "moderating", or basically helping out with rules/questions. Signups are now open!

I'm not 100% new, I have played once before, but if there is room I would like to play. my username is liopoil there. I'd suggest going ahead and using the minor improvements and occupations, they aren't too complicated. I used them in my first game and it worked out fine.

it will be your turn next shraeye. THe reason you haven't had a turn for a while is that Dsell took starting player, and since he is to your left, you now go last in this round instead of first. Now, you'll go last next round as well since he took it again

For you, that's pretty much all that's going to happen this harvest.. you'll lose four food.

In general, there are three parts of a harvest:

1) Growing Phase: For any veggies or grain that you have sown, you will receive 1 from each stack.
2) Feeding Phase: You must feed your family. You have to spend 2 food for every member of your family (With the exception of newborns... family members that were created in the round immediately preceding a harvest.. they only take 1 food to feed).
3) Breeding Phase: For any animals that you have at least 2 of, they produce an offspring (if you have room on your farm). Note that no type of animal can produce more than 1 offspring.. for example, if you had 5 sheep you would still only get one newborn.

I should just take another comprehensive look at the board and maybe the rules. I've been mostly playing from my phone so it's hard to remember all that I can do at any given time and even tougher to know what I should do. I like this game, I can tell that there's a lot of depth and it'd be fun in person (and possibly in a second game online). I just don't want anyone to think I'm intentionally screwing them or anything with suboptimal choices; they're not extremely purposeful at this point.

Oh I understand what you mean. I really enjoy playing these games in person much more. They're easier in person and easier to remember things and what is going on.

I find it really hard to try and screw people over online since It's hard to pay attention to what everyone is doing by figuring out what has changed... IRL, it's much easier.

That's what I was thinking (pardon for giving away your plan) but you can plow, pick up 2 grain, then sow and bake the other.

I was actually playing Agricola IRL last night and had the corn scoop and grain cart (grain cart gives 2 extra grain when you take grain) so every time I took grain I got 4 grain

It was pretty awesome.

When you sow, you place one grain in as many fields as you can afford to (You can sow as many fields as you wish, as long as you have 1 grain for each field). This places that grain on that field, and in addition, you get two additional grain from the bank placed on each field. Then, in the next three harvests, you will get 1 grain taken off. So, you'll get 1 grain after rounds 9, 11, and 13.

Baking bread is when you use an oven to convert grain directly into food. If you have the stone oven or the brick oven (major improvements), when you play the bake bread card, you can immediately convert some of your grain into food, following the guidelines on the improvement.

Like an engine in dominion. It basically automatically generates food for you. Usually through planting grain/baking bread or planting veggies and cooking them or through animals. Some way that will generate food in a few actions, rather than just taking food off the board.
