Trash cards or get really powerful attacks?

I've always wondered the answer to this question, and it gets annoying every time it comes up:  Is it better to trash a few cards, or not trash them and get the first Mountebank?  (or something similar)  (of course it depends on the kingdom, but what do you usually want to do?)

I am no expert but I know enough to say that there is no easy answer to this question. This particular question depends so much on the kingdom. Very very generally, though, if there appears to be a viable engine on the board (viable even if your opponent chooses to go straight for the curser) and the trashing will be important for that, go for trashing first. I recently had a Base only game on goko, and when I saw Witch on the board I erroneously assumed it would be a Witch-BM game. I simultaneously scoffed and was intrigued when my opponent opened Workshop/Remodel but I proceeded to get crushed by his awesome Base-game engine that shrugged off my curses and gave me even more. I didn't analyze the game well (casual game lol) but the point is that you have to analyze the board holistically and go from there. There is never a single right answer. We all know that Witch-BM is supposed to be dominating in Base, but it wasn't in that game.

Cursing/strong attacks are great and very often the best move right up front, but in Dominion nothing is certain (except of course that you can never skip Rebuild...or Scout).

Do both!   With the amazing TAXMAN!!!!!!

Actually, Taxman is a rather middling attack.  A better example of an attack/trasher would be Ambassador.

Along these lines, what I've always wondered is what do you do when your Witch/Chapel or Mountebank/Chapel opening collides? Do you play your attack, or trash? When do you switch your priorities?

It's a different answer when you step up to multiplayer btw.

Presuming it's turn 3/4, I'd trash 3 cards, since I am going to be buying a silver/etc on the other turn, and I want to play Witch more often.

You clearly open double Urchin and absolve yourself from decision making.

But which one do you trash if they collide??!!??!!

In 2P: I'd trash if Witch/Chapel collided

In 3P+: I'd curse if Witch/Chapel collided

I typically curse whenever my opening terminals collide.
