I think this is a very good combo : with trashing and source of draw (here Doctor and menagerie), you can quickly get more than 4-5 provinces in a single turn.

Rather than Merchant Guild + Quarry being a good combo, I think this is just Quarry being generally good with any +buy and Merchant Guild being generally very strong on its own.

More specifically, Merchant Guilds is going to like cost reduction, since then you can spend lots of buys on engine pieces while taking coin tokens.

can someone shortly explain why merchant guild is so strong?

i cant figure it out yet how good they are.
You definitly want to have more than one in play. Are 2 allready strong or only 3 or 4?

By itself its just a Herbalist which gains some coin tokens.

We don't really know how good Merchant Guild is right now.

I think most people are expecting it to be a fairly mediocre card most of the time, but shining in the right kind of engine. A quarry based engine is certainly one of those cases.

...spin-offs are still better for all of the previously cited reasons.
But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.
