I've got a character going now I think is fairly interesting...a Deep Dwarf Death Knight (of Yred, of course). I was trying to think of novel ways to play Deep Dwarves, other than the usual necromancy, Makhleb, Elyvilon, Trog. And I realized that all the enemy death knights you see in the game are deep dwarves, and all the deep dwarves you see in the game are death knights. So maybe there's something to it lol.

The idea is you use Drain Life as a source of healing. Which isn't the most reliable thing in the world but eh it's enough...I'd never really tried it before, it's more powerful than I expected. Staying at **** piety to use it is annoying sometimes, but it doesn't impede the undead servant gifts so long as you stay at *** or higher. Very satisfying to sap the lifeblood of a screen full of yaks, and with +3 invocations you can really get it to sting. And of course you start with that wand of heal wounds, which is major, and I'm not using my MP for too much so I could recharge it liberally if I needed to. But I haven't yet.

Picked up some storm dragon armor, which is pretty cozy. Maybe could have basic charms online by Vault. My main concern right now is my weapon, which is a hand axe of electrocution...not awful but it would be nice to upgrade to something beefier. I was very, VERY tempted to roll with Agnes' infamous vampiric lajatang...but I already had 15 in axes and 10 in shields. It may still be the right move to use it, but I'll stay the course and hopefully find a vampiric axe somewhere.

I wasn't expecting to make it very far but I just grabbed the swamp rune. So now that I've posted this I'll die in Snake two minutes later naturally...

Anyway I thought this was a cool character concept, it's pretty fun and surprisingly effective and it feels like a unique class.

Ah well, as predicted I met an ignominious end in Snake. I had plenty of healing/escape resources, but no rPois (none spawned!! Well except on some weaksauce artifact weapon), and I underestimated the damage output of some Naga Sharpshooters. Before I died I did have the great satisfaction of draining the shit out of Saint Roka's band.

Unfortunately no spectral dudes, because I was struggling to keep my piety at ****. I made it to ***** once, but when I tried to capture someone it failed and sent me right back to **** haha.

Playing a DD is exhausting! I mean, I would have an easier time of it if I took a less crazy strategy, but what fun would that be

Octopode Assassin of Ash...2 runes, died helplessly to a giant eyeball in Depths as Mennas and co wail on me. Personal best Octopode ever by far; I had just picked up a quick blade of distortion from the Enchantress and I had Orb of Destruction, Haste, DMsl, etc. available for support magic. It was practically cheating though...I had found a +6 ring of protection followed by a +4 ring of protection on D1 and D2, which simplified things immensely.

Vampiric draining is absolutely cheating. But I only found it at the bottom of Elf, which meant I only got to use it in Zot...and by that point, I wasn't taking any chances.

I have a Lvl 13 Grey Draconian Warper of Okawaru. I have a variety of spells to cast, I'm more a wizard than a bruiser, but I can get close as an option on squishier things. Most of my spells are utility spells: Blink, Teleport Control, Sting, Mephitic Cloud, Shroud of Golubria, Cure Poison, Portal Projectile, but I also have two big damage spells Bolt of Magma and Iron Shot. I can cast Magma Bolt at 7%. Iron Shot is still a bit off (22%). For now, I do a fair amount of my damage with weapons crossbows, primarily, but want some magical alternatives that scale better into the mid/late game.

So far Okawaru has not given me any Long Blades (I have 6 levels of skill in Long Blades, my best weapon skill). The best Long Blade I've found is a +1, +2 scimitar of slicing (pretty crappy at this point in the game where I've gotten to the bottom of Lair). Should I switch over to this RandArt that's an Axe and give up on Long Blades or just focus on magic/projectile damage until a better Long Blade eventually generates:

The +6, +4 broad axe of the Hills {elec, +Blink Dex+1 Int+2 SInv} stops crackling.

Nice! It's hard to give super specific advice without a character dump, but looking good so far.

How's your defensive skills? Being a grey draconian helps with that (grey draconians are sweet), but if you haven't already I'd probably put at least 10 levels in Dodging and Fighting.

Spell set looks pretty good; iron shot is plenty for a 3 rune game (in my experience), so get that castable, and if your Earth gets good enough you could add in LCS or shatter. Might as well get some higher level translocation if you find Book of the Warp, obviously Controlled Blink is excellent and Phase Shift is also awesome. Maybe put a few more points into Charms, if and when you can get stuff like Regen, Haste, R/DMsl. Depends on what spells you find of course, a few levels in Summoning or Necromancy can be helpful as well if you feel like it.

I would say you don't need to train weapon skills at all right now, unless you're really going for a hybrid warrior mage. The axe is not THAT good IMO, wait until Oka gives you something worth training for (or you find something, more likely). Seems you can do enough damage with your conjurations and bows anyway, and you don't want to spread your skills too thin.

I found a Manual of Dodging (a pretty good find) so that's been on for awhile. I'm at Level 10+. I'm going to keep training it until the manual stops teaching me things because hey free XP. Fighting is only at about level 6, but I'll train it up for the HP/other small bonuses.

I do have a point or two in Charms because it's used in Control Teleport and Shroud of Golubria. If I find Book of Warp I'll be training Translocations and Charms a lot more (I found Teleport Control in the Book of Control). I haven't found any of those spells you mentioned.

I started playing Santa Claus as a High Elf but I think it makes sense as an Ogre. There's no way Santa is the same species as the elves in his employ

The motivation for this character was that I'd always die with Ogres because of their low AC, so I thought I'd use Ozocubo's Armour to boost that up a bit. I used weapons of protection the whole game, which is pretty lame but hey, for an ogre every bit of AC is precious. I wanted to curse a giant spiked club and use Condensation Shield as well but it didn't work out that way. I'll tell ya it's nice to be a caster with 300 HP.

And of course Ashenzari is great...Santa knows everything, but is also bound to his duties. By the end of the game I had hungerless level 7s including cBlink, Servitor, Orb, as well as Haste, DMsl, Freezing Cloud, and Glaciate was getting castable for fun. Switched out Icicle for Dispel Undead so I could mow through Crypt and Tomb, and also to boost my average Servitor power. I would have gone further but I was down to scraps of food, having eaten most of it in Crypt/Tomb. I probably would have been fine in Pan but I wasn't willing to risk such a stupid fate.

And I cracked up whenever I imagined Santa waddling through the dungeon, blasting orcs with his badass Christmas magic. It keeps me more motivated to stay alive haha. BMO was the same way.

This guy was the stealthiest dude there ever was...Bloodless Vampire, 27 stealth, Champion of Dithmenos, Stealth++ on the Faerie Dragon Armour. It was absurd...you could walk right next to wandering monsters and they wouldn't notice. You could start stabbing them sometimes and they wouldn't even notice haha.

Unfortunately after 12 runes, a Brimstone Fiend appeared out of nowhere in Dis to ruin my day. Tried to teleport out, but my wand of healing was empty, and potions of curing weren't cutting it. The sad part is I was just thinking that it was getting a little hot for comfort, and I was going to cut and run after the 13th, especially with the wand of heal wounds run dry and no more discovered recharging.

Such a fun game though. The royal jelly -- stabbed! Pan lords stabbed all over the place. 3/4 of the "boss" Pan Lords were stabbed without even waking up. Cerebov was uncooperative and started marching around his little island like a brat. Fortunately I had been carrying around a +8 blowgun all game from the Labyrinth, 6 needles of paralysis from the Abyss of all places, and a manual of throwing from Elf so I knew how to use it. I was able to paralyze him, shadow step and stab, although it took a few needles and he whacked me with his sword once. It all came together, that was a really cool moment.

Anyway, sad story, came here to commiserate ;(

I take it as a sign that my true stealth win must be an octopode.

Dithmenos is great for an IE, I recommend it! Not just for stabbers.

... and the thematic explanation would be that Santa Claus works during the night, and nobody has ever seen him, right? 

How do Ice Elementalists work with Dithmenos?

Hahaha yeah something like that. It's not as much of a stretch as it could be. Originally I wanted Santa to worship a good god but I abandoned that plan.

Well IEs are what I've tried, so that's why I mention it particularly. Dith won't stand for an FE obviously. It might work well with other magic classes too.

...but my point is that conjurations with shadow support are very, very powerful. Throw Icicle with a shadow shard chaser is devastating. Or in the particular case of an ogre, it's very pleasant when your shadow hits with a giant spiked club, or hurls a giant rock. The shadow passive bonus is very strong for anything, not just hexing. And the bonus stealth is just icing for most characters.

I did learn that Dith doesn't really like summoners though. I didn't realize he doesn't accept your allies' kills. I was wondering why my piety dropped to 4* in Tomb, because I was chomping everything with Mana Vipers!
