I tend to pick a random race, then pick a class.  It sounds like pure melee is OP?

Not OP, just easier to play/get into, as your survival is mainly based on big HP pool and scrolls of tp/blink, where you have to think more with other classes.

I do not agree with heron that even with pure melee you need spells. Heck, you will be wearing chainmail/platemail for majority of time (unless you find a dragon armor) and that makes casting nigh impossible. I'd much rather stick to pure melee and Evocations for various wand effects.

He did use the word magic.  Wands are magical.  Is there a wand of blinking out there?

No, I really think that you want to train blink or swiftness or even haste on a melee character.
The benefits are enormous. Haste is just a massive buff to everything basically, and blink and swiftness make great escape options when you're in a pinch. I suppose if you need blink to escape then you should have run earlier, but it's still good to have.

OH! big question.  How do I change my name? I put Xed in as my name when i first started playing but I can't figure out how to use a new name for new characters.  All my characters are named Xed

In the main menu, click the enter your name field and you can change it. This also lets you have multiple characters at once.

Also, just cleared Lair with my Grey DrWz of Sif Muna, so yay.

Sadly, same. I took a long break after my Zot: 3 death in annoyance though. And this run is looking really good; I will start casting Lehudib's Crystal Spear and Ice Storm soon, and those are really good spells.

I discovered a hidden room by accident during one run when my scroll of teleportation put me in a room that was walled off from everything else on the floor.  Is there a good way to discover those without a scroll of magic mapping?  You could reach it using the staircase in the floor below, but if I had passed by that one I probably would have assumed it led nowhere special

If you denounce a religion, will the god try to find you and kill you later or something like that, or have you lost very little as long as you don't return to that religion that run?

Meh, wands and scrolls.

Though, I did lose once on a very good run cuz I banked most my Blink Scrolls for a treasure trove that was.. shitty.

I like drinking those in start, if they turn out good, great, if they don't, well, at least I died early. :D

Yes. There is always 3 stairs down and 3 stairs up, on every floor. If on a floor there are only 2 steps down, that means that one of the up-steps on lower floor lead to a secret room. (If there are 4 stairs, one is a mimic).

Yes, they will take vengeance if you leave them (exception is leaving a good god for another good god (Zin, Evylion, Shining One)).

Terence is like.. the easiest unique (except maybe Iyib).

Sigmund, on the other hand.. if you see him, run. If you really have to kill him, do it like.. after D:9 or so.

Also Grinder. Grinder is a huge bitch, exp if he paralyses you.

So, is the best strategy in this game to be monotheistic?

For the most time, yes.

Later on when you can take the punishment and you already made the best use of your current God and need some other benefits, you can switch (I never did this, but people say so).

I got killed by God punishment only once, I think. I was Demonspawn that had that trait to randomly spawn imps and things, and I have taken Okawaru. Unfortunately, I forgot that he doesn't take it lightly when your allies die.

what does Zot: 3 mean?

Within the dungeon, there are other branches, like the Lair of the Beasts (the easiest one), the Orcish Mines, or the Vaults.
The Orb of Zot is on the Zot branch, which has at least three levels. To enter the Zot branch, you first have to acquire 3 runes of Zot. These are found in most of the more difficult branches, like the Shoals or the Snake Pit. Then you go down to the twenty-seventh dungeon floor, enter the Zot branch, head down a few more floors (hopefully not getting killed by the weird monsters there) and grab the orb. Then I guess you leave the dungeon. Probably something terrible happens when you grab the orb though.

There are 15 runes total though, so you can also play an extended game where you get all of the runes.

I tend to learn everything from the starting book, and later ditch slow and summon imp.
I usually start out skilling spellcasting and conjuration.

The main tactic I like to use is hiding in a corridor and using conjure flame as a barrier. If there is no room for conjure flame, you can summon imp, back up twice, and then conjure.
Summon imp is a pretty good spell for a while actually.

Mephitic cloud is also very useful to deal with crowds, especially if your character doesn't breathe like my current grey draconian.

Blink is used to escape, magic missile for killing the basic enemies.

I base my later skills off what books I find/are given.

How far do you usually get to and what kills you? (Like, which level of the dungeon do you die on)
Have you reached the ecumenical temple?

You probably need to use the tactic called "Running for your life" a little more often.

I've reached the ecumenical temple several times.  I didn't know it had a fixed position, I thought it was a random place.

I found a dagger of speed.  It said attacks with it take half as long, but deal slightly less damage.  Does that mean if I max out my dagger skills I will attack four times as fast? Or do they not stack?
