Although I've never gotten very far in nethack, I've played a lot of roguelike and roguelike-like games. I'm hoping that someday Sword of Fargoal 2 will be released, but I'm not holding my breath there. If any of you have a PSP or a Vita, I recommend Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman for those who enjoy roguelikes and Prinny and Prinny 2 for those who enjoy very difficult platformers.

EDIT: Oh, and Spelunky for those who like both. Man, that is a great game.

Anyone else ever get into Dwarf Fortress? I played it a whole bunch back in the day but then stopped for awhile. I recently picked up one of the newer releases and tried to see how far I could get. Halfway through the third summer, one of my immigrants who had lived in the fort for awhile revealed themselves to be a necromancer, animated a bunch of body parts that were in a refuse pile near my entrance, and killed almost my entire fortress before being subdued, and all I could do was be like, "well that's new."

I've played it before.  Not much though.

I've been playing a few months. Trying to get my minecarts to function properly.

My only noteworthy DF accomplishment was colonizing a seaside volcano. Then I constructed a grand lavaduct to carry molten rock to the sea, and began to construct a massive artificial igneous island!

But then, you know, goblins. I may still get back into it someday.

That's when you redirect the magma flow to double as your fortress defense. Couldn't possibly go wrong!

I can recommend FTL as well. It's a good little time filler and cheap.

All the rats I've seen are red.  If you really did see a green rat, it is probably a high level rat that has a small chance of appearing on an early floor.

My highest score so far is 5556 on DCSS i challenge you all to defeat me!

468982 is my highest, still. (HOFi of Beogh). My highest non-pure-melee is much lower, 49795 (White DrNe of Kiku, died from stupid Orc Knight's bolt).

What do you need help with exactly, pops? What class(es) are you playing?

I tend to pick a random race, then pick a class.  It sounds like pure melee is OP?

I can't figure out what fangs and claws means, i looked all over the abilities and mutation descriptions but couldn't find it.

Is ther a diminishing returns where levelling up one skill high makes it harder and harder to level it up, or is the game kind of broken when you max out melee weapon proficiency?

The main thing about leveling melee weapon skills is that it decreases your attack delay.
A weapons minimum delay is its base delay/2, rounded down to end in a 0, or 70%, whichever is lower.
So base delay 100% = min delay 50%, base delay 130% = min delay 60%, and base delay 200% = min delay 70%.
Note that the percent signs are misleading; I don't think it actually has anything to do with percents.
Each level of weapon skill decreases your attack delay by 5% until you reach min delay. Leveling past this point doesn't have much effect.

Fangs and claws and other body parts sometimes give you auxiliary attacks when you attack something. They also may affect which items you are able to equip or use.

Melee is good, but even a melee based character will want to delve into magic eventually for escape options.

Some combos you might want to try are Merfolk Transmuter, Draconian Wizard, maybe a Minotaur Berserker if you want an easy start.

I see no one has mentioned Dungeons of Dredmor which has tons of replayability because of the role balancing.

Binding of Isaac is fun for being able to just pick it up whenever you like.

It routinely sells for 0.99 or less on steam which is how I got it and Dreadmor.

I'm not an active user of steam so I am not really able to catch when they have sales.
