And you have every right to boycott their product for not letting you say "fuckity fuck."  Or you could always just post on getsatisfaction.

I really hope they don't have any players from Niger.

"Hey where are you from?"

It seems increasingly unnecessary to have auto censors in place when dealing with a global community (this is a lie: I always find auto censors unnecessary; adding Babel hilarity doesn't make it any more unnecessary).

Especially since you can just mute the other person. If he makes an offensive statement, then silence him. No reason to cut off his conversation for what might be considered by a subset of people to be offensive. Let the player make his own decision of what is offensive. You only have to be offended once, and the solution is easy in Goko.

The harm is that it is ridiculous if I can't say "less".

On the other hand, what's the harm?
The fact that all such systems filter out perfectly legitimate words for some languages. The only proper way to approach the problem would require language identification and separate filters for each language. The former could be done since the language can be identified fairly reliably already based on short snippets and because the users are identified across sessions, but that would be ridiculous overkill for a product like this. For the latter, there are languages for which no good filters exists, partly because of less effort having been put into developing them but also because it is inherently much harder for some. For example, creating a good filter for Finnish would be an order of magnitude harder task than it is for English.

The best they could do would be something like "if it looks like English (or maybe some other major language) we filter it, otherwise we don't". The benefit-to-cost ratio of even that is quite low.

You know what's even better in terms of cost:reward ratio?  Just don't have a language filter at all.

Or allow every player to set an option for wether the chat filter is active for chat he receives.

It's so ridiculous you can't use WTF.

The easiest way to get through the profanity filter is to put an extra letter in the middle of the blocked word.  Here's an example, courtesy of one of my more charming opponents.

To achieve maximum efficiency and protection against filters, add lots of extra letters! For example, when you strip the excess letters from this post it becomes highly offensive to certain people.

That's why I'm not a fan of swear filters.

The harm it does is that it can disrupt legitimate conversation (I wrote a fiction once where "cockpit" was bleeped out).

And the benefit is minimal. It doesn't stop people from swearing. It only stops them from swearing with correctly spelled words. Frankly, if someone is going to call me a flaming twatwaffle, I would at least prefer that the person spells it correctly*.

It's a false sense of security. The host is saying, "Look at this safe environment we are providing your child," while not presenting a safe environment at all.

* Caveat: The type of person who would call you a flaming twatwaffle probably is not intelligent enough to correctly spell flaming twatwaffle anyway.

So yeah, I saw Vermilion on last night.  And he was totally serious.

On the good side, I know whose opinions to ignore on the forum!
