this could fill really fast. grujah and shraeye probably want to play, then just two spots left and 4 people who were in last game who might want to play.

We could always play modern!

Has anyone played other variants extensively?

I've personally always been a classic player. However JDIP supports many different varieties.

However x2: I still plan on running this one Classic. :P

Jack, that's a hugeee map and I don't want to think about how long it would take -- but it looks fun! It says no playtesting in the article -- how many times did you get to play it?

A couple of times. It proved to be a bit unbalanced, and I made a second version, but I have since lost the second version.

wow, looks like you guys actually have played this a lot. That most recent game was my first game of diplomacy, but since I've played a few games on http://www.playdiplomacy.com/ . I haven't played any variants.

There was a chance for a stalemate line if Germany helped us. That's kinda funny; right now I'm in a game (on the above site) where I'm germany and leading a stalemate line that we've been working on for a long time against a threatening italy.

Playdiplomacy.com is okay in terms of finding games, but my favorite site to play on is dipbounced.com. The interface is a little harder to use, but once you're used to it it's not bad. The level of play and communication is much higher than what I've found on playdiplomacy, but unfortunately the site is dying :(

For interfaces, I like playdiplomacyonline.com.  It's the cleanest interface I've seen, but the site is just starting to take off, so it's hard to get a full set of 7 players without one power (or more  >:() just disappearing.

For quality of play, you gotta use the Email judge servers, where the old-school and serious hobby-players hang out.  http://usak.asciiking.com/

That reminds me, I should post my QT link in Dip2 with Jimmm, because he and I discussed some edge-cases (well, kind of. But you saw an example RE: Berlin in the final year).

I was looking at things for a while trying to see if there was a way for people to rally against Galz in the last game, and hold him at 17 centers, even if Germany decided to gift Warsaw to the Turkish Empire.  I think there was, but I'm not a complete expert in stalemate lines.

I'm familiar with that line... and it might have been possible, but it was going to be tough if it was - only because I had a troop positioning advantage at that point. England was too Fleet heavy to hold it - I *think*.

Imo, I kinda lost when I given away moscow stupidly, I could have hold it for quite longer.

bump! is shraeye playing? he should!

I see why you guys prefer those other sites. I'm playing a game with a really bad russia that is really swinging the game. We've tried to show him the error in his ways but won't listen. Normally players like this would just get killed off, but nobody can afford to fight him right now, so he's sitting at 6 centers.

Any of the other maps in jDip looked interesting, just because it would take experienced players out of their comfort zones.

Heh, they do that. Moderation my friend. I still play, but I pick and choose much more carefully than I used to.

I'll take your /out for now, but if it starts to look like this might be launchable in the future (a few more sign up), I'll see if you want back in.

/tag.

I'm trying to find another copy of the rulebook, the one on their website seems to be corrupted (or adobe sucks).  I get the basic idea, but I don't understand all the move details - particularly convoy - and I didn't get to the part re: building stuff in winter.

oh you don't need to bother with convoying, it's never a good idea, especially if you're england.

So for convoying, your moving a land unit across water via a ship.  So, say, if you're england and had an army in London, a fleet in the English channel, and wanted to move your army to belgium, you would order:

Army London - Belgium
Fleet English Channel Convoy London - Belgium.
(Edited, thanks Shraeye).

Your fleet "stays in place" and transports the ground unit along it.

This movement has the same conditions to be resolved as a normal move.. for example, if a german unit were to also move into belgium, the move would bounce and your army would stay in london.  You can support the move into Belgium from a fleet in the north sea, for instance, to provide it further support like you would a normal move.

The one difference is that if a convoying fleet is forced to retreat, the convoy does not go through.  So if your fleet in the English channel was attacked by two french fleets, the move to belgium would not go through, even if no one else moved to belgium.

Any other questions about it?  Or does that clear it up?

Army London - English Channel - Belgium
Fleet English Channel Convoy London - Belgium.

You only need to specify the convoy path if you are using one of the email judges (USAK, for example).

As far as I know, the current version of the rules allows for ambiguous convoys which will then only be disrupted if both convoying fleets are dislodged. (nkirbit pointed this out, but it's a common mistake to think that you can 'cut' a convoy like you can a support; the convoy will go through unless the fleet is dislodged)

I recently played some GoT which is basically diplomacy easy-modo.

I'm willing to give this a go, but be ready to yell at me a  lot.

That leaves us one down if Twisted decides to play. Two if not. Plus Grujah needs to be dragged back in here.
