Highway/Saboteur might be preferable if you're trying to hit Provinces exclusively; they can replace them with Duchies or Golds, but Saboteur digs all the way through, so it's much more reliable than Knights. You can play fewer Highways once you trashed the expensive stuff.

I meant, if meanness is your thing. Obviously don't buy Saboteur when it's not in the game, that would be cheating.

So, it turns out Highway and Knights are pretty mean.

For sure, big Knights engines are brutal even if you can't trash your opponent's Provinces. If they manage five Provinces before you trash the rest of their deck down to Copper and Pawns/Courtyards/&c., it should be a close game. Normally it takes them more than 8 turns to empty the Estates, and if you were sensible, Estates won't end the game anyway.
