According to the official rules, how many different ways can you make it so that you put a card on your Native Village mat, when you don't have a Native Village mat?  I can think of two.

Don't you, according to the official rules, get a mat when you buy a NV?  Same with PS and Island?

sorry,just looked it up.  You get the mat when you first gain a NV
so I believe Masquerade actually causes you to gain one without gaining one, therefore not giving you a mat

Yep, and I think that should be the only solution then. Masquerade is the only card that lets you get a card without gaining it.

On the other hand, you take an Island mat when you take an Island, not gain.  I don't think that's a well-defined term.  Maybe being passed an Island warrants taking an Island mat, but then you've conveyed the information that you've been passed an Island.  Same for Pirate Ship.

I was originally going to do Island, but I saw that in the rules so I chose Native Village instead.

I think the online implementations, isotropic and Goko, handle this better by giving you the mat whevener the respective card appears in the kingdom or the Black Market deck. Perhaps the original rules were specified the way they were because there was no space on the cards for an additional setup rule like Trade Route has.

Me, but I had no idea you weren't supposed to put some mats out if you didn't have the card. I just throw them down for everyone before the game starts.

I usually don't bother with mats, especially not the correct ones. Most of the time I just take a NV mat and use it for everything, Island, NV, VP chips, coin tokens. A Trade Route tokens I just put on the side. I can remember and look at the pile to know how much they are worth.

Good catch ! I think if I ever masquerade my opponent a native village and she doesn't have a mat yet, I will argue like hell that it is just a necropolis until she gets one
