See if you can spot the two completely reasonable mistakes my opponent made, which, together, lost him the game:

#1 ycz6: 22 points (3 Provinces, 3 Great Halls, and an Estate); 16 turns

#2 marin: 21 points (2 Provinces, 5 Great Halls, and 4 Estates); 16 turns

   — marin's turn 16 —
   marin plays a Border Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions.
   marin plays a Great Hall.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
   marin plays a Grand Market.
   ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action, +1 buy, and +$2.
   marin plays a Grand Market.
   ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action, +1 buy, and +$2.
   marin plays a Great Hall.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
   marin plays a Grand Market.
   ... (marin reshuffles.)
   ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action, +1 buy, and +$2.
   marin plays a Border Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions.
marin plays a Silver and 2 Quarries.
   marin buys a Border Village.
   ... gaining a Mandarin.
... ... putting a Silver and 2 Quarries back on the deck (in some order).
   marin buys a Border Village.
   ... gaining a Mandarin.
   marin buys an Estate.
(marin draws: a Silver, 2 Quarries, a Province, and a Great Hall.)

Great Halls, Border Villages, and Grand Markets are all gone.
ycz6 wins!

I don't get it. He ran out the piles when he was behind? He didn't grab duchies with the Border villages, getting Mandarins instead for no apparent reason? I don't see how mandarin is the problem here, and I don't see why these are reasonable mistakes.

How do you grab Duchies with Border Villages when two Quarries are in play?

You don't. I should read more carefully. But a duchy on the second one, because the BVs were up to 6 by then. I don't know, I still don't think this is that confusing, though somewhat more understandable, but at least as much quarry's fault as it is Mandarin's.

His plan was probably to just buy two Border Villages to 3-pile, grabbing random actions with them, then buy a Duchy to end the game and win. It's just unfortunate that the random action he chose happened to be Mandarin, making buying a Border Village and a Duchy impossible.

Of course, he could have gotten a Duchy with the BV on-gain effect the second time around, but likely he wasn't paying too much attention since he figured he'd already won. He said as much in the chat postgame when I pointed this out.

Well there's the real problem. The very same thing's cost me more than a few games. ;)
