Introduction, Sign-ups, etc:
« on: April 02, 2013, 05:19:47 pm »

I've noticed recently that it's quite common for a game to be posted as an "Any interest in..." thread, just to have it fill up within a few hours by regulars here on f.DS.FG. While that's certainly great for all of us who are addicted to playing way to many games at once, it's often not very inviting to new players who don't know the whens or the hows to get involved. There's no centralized place to come together and say "Hey, I'd like to play X".

As a whole community, I think we've done a remarkable job organizing and running and growing ourselves, but I would hate to see that stall, and I always want to be encouraging and welcoming to new players. I want it to be as easy as possible for them to come in and join in on all our good times.

With that said, what I hope to achieve here is two fold. First, a list of all active and willing mods, with a list of games that they're willing and excited to host. Second, a list of all games that we are currently playing, or have interest in playing, with a constant and open "interest in" sign-up list. This way new players can come in, see what we're all about, and say "Hey, I would like in on the next game of 'X'". Their name goes up on the list, and when it's got a full team of players, we can check with the mods who are willing to host that game and see if they're ready to launch another game.

Obviously there's no commitment here. If you're a mod and are willing to host, but just have too many games going on at a particular time, we'll wait you out, or maybe find another willing soul to host. But this way we can match up players and games and mods, and have a nice centralized flow.

The only rule that I'll implement is for addicts like myself who will sign up for almost anything over and over. If I (or anybody else) is currently in a running game of X, and a new player (or somebody not currently playing X) wants in the next one, that player will get priority over me. In addition, Mods will always have final say in how many games they wish to run at any given time. Otherwise Watno/Kirian/Kuildeous/Myself will have Tables running 10 games of Through the Ages at once...

So:

Please post here if you are a Mod, or wish to be a Mod. Post a list of any/all games that you are willing to host.

and

Please post here if you are a Player, or wish to be a Player. Post the name of any/all games that you are willing to join in.

I will try my best to keep both lists as up to date as possible. I will also include a link to the current Non-Mafia Games Queue, which has links to all active and completed games, for easy reference.

oh, this is cool! well, I think I might be willing to mod a game, if it's one that I've played several times. I have not modded anything yet. I am also a player! There's really quite a few games that I would at least consider playing in, pretty much any game that I've either played and liked, or sound really interesting and not too complicated to learn without actually ever seeing the actual board and pieces. Currently I am in diplomacy, puerto rico, power grid, and ground floor.

I'm willing to mod every game I enjoy, but I like to limit those to 3-5 games at a time. I currently host Mage Knight I+II, Pandemic IV, Shadows over Camelot (which still searches for replacement). I hosted Small World before. Here I posted some suggestions for upcoming games. But I currently won't host more games unless another one is finished.

I currently play in most other games here.
7 Wonders Teams I, Battlestar Galactica I, Flash Point: Fire Rescue I, Ground Floor I, Pandemic IV, Power Grid I, Puerto Rico I, Red November I, Terra Mystica II+III, Through the Ages V

I might host another Terra Mystica, but probably not after the current ones have finished. if someone else is interested in hosting this, I can provide the spreadsheet.
I'd love to play Eclipse and Dominant Species.

Officially announcing signups for TtA VI through to XV.[/joke]

Give me some time to think about this. But I'm probably happy to host most, if not all, of the games I've already hosted, and perhaps a few more.

I guess I'm always willing to "mod" an Agricola game of any size (2-5) on Boite a Jeux (really just involves setting up the game, anyone can do that). I think a couple people posted in Agricola II that they want in on the next one, don't remember who though.

Count me in to play Gauntlet of Fools, 7 Wonders (prefer singles, but team game would still be fun), and Puerto Rico.

I like to host/play in stuff :).
hmmm....
I've been considering running a Deadlands:Reloaded RPG after Power Grid finishes, since there have been a few random requests for an RPG (although I don't know how much interest there is in Savage Worlds)

Mostly I want to play in games that I can't play with my usual gaming partners.  So: Terra Mystica, Through the Ages, BSG, Witch's Brew, Mage Knight, Shadows over Camelot.  Basically any heavy and/or thematic games (except Dominant Species/Eclipse, since I'm hopeful I'll get them and play them some day).  I'd be down for an 18xx or Age of Steam or something if those are PbF-able, and someone's willing to organize it.

I'm currently in 6 games, which I think should be my limit...(especially if one of them changes into me GMing an RPG)

Okay. I'm willing to host:
BSG
Resistance
7 Wonders
2R1B (now I've actually played one lol)
Ground Floor (if Kirian were to send me the document)
Through the Ages

I probabably don't want to be running more than 3 games at once. Right now I'm running two - BSG and TtA V

I'll happily mod Ground Floor, and you can certainly have the spreadsheet Tables; I think you should be able to make a copy with Google Docs anyway, yes?

I can also mod Puerto Rico or Power Grid Factory Manager (I wouldn't want to mod PG itself on a forum).

Interested in playing the deeper strategy games, preferably those with high transparency.  (Gee I wonder why I hate Mafia style games.)

I'll just quote this here, is there interest in a beginners/learners game?

So eHalcyon and Jimmmm have never played before, TINAS has only played a little and was interested in E-deck only, and there could be others here who haven't played before but would like to give it a try. I think an all-beginners game would work fine, and the only modding that really needs to be done is setting up the actual game at BaJ. AFAIK you can't set up a game without being part of it, so one of the beginners would need to do that.

Thoughts? Should I post this in the Intro/Sign ups thread?

Agricola III is actually full now; really I should just see if Jimmm or TINAS want the fifth spot since they expressed interest before. If they don't, then eHalc gets the spot.

I can set up another game if there's more demand, the modding work really is just setting up the game at BaJ :P

Anyway I'll PM Jimmm and TINAS to see if they want in and change the thread title to show that it's full.

A GTA game would be cool---San Andreas?  CJ, the crazy hippy?  woozy?

I'd host another game of Love Letter if people wanted to play. I don't check this board too often at the moment because I'm not in any games, so PM me if there's enough interest to get my attention.

Depends if your victim gets turned on by being beaten at simple bluffing/deduction based card games or not, I guess.

Add me down as a willing to mod for T'zolkin: The Mayan Calendar. I do believe it should be relatively easy to mod, in terms of board stuff. And I'm sure I can convince a friend to lend me his copy long enough that I can collate all the cards and stuff into a document.
Note I won't be starting this for at least two weeks, because exams.

I'd be interested in playing Through the Ages. I've never played more than the introduction game, though, and I think it would be interesting to play with other beginners who also want to learn the game.

If we can grab a group of beginners, I'd be happy to host another game.

Alternatively, if you want something that'll be easier to follow, you could jump into a game on BGO (check the thread here for details). Or even, host one and post the game name & password in that thread, and let people know you're new. After all, we don't bite Well Watno and I do but...

Procrastination is a terrible thing

It's beautiful.

Rules question (because the rules are ambiguous and we seem to play it differently every game): With Agriculture tech track space 2, can you take corn from a space which still has 4 wood tiles, or do you need at least 1 empty field on the space before being able to use the tech?

The rules are actually pretty clear, on page 12:

Quote
If you cannot see any Corn Harvest Tiles on the Palenque
action space you’re using (i.e. they are hidden under Wood
Harvest Tiles or there are no more left
), you can still use
that action space to get corn (but you do not get a Corn
Harvest Tile).

With the technology, you are always able to collect corn on Palenque.

Ah okay, I just remember reading this thread a while back and still not really understanding the answer because there are so many conflicting responses. It looks like the rulebook's been updated between print runs too, so I guess you've got the new "fixed" rules, which means they're the right ones.

Wow, either these rules have been changed, or we've made a big error every time we've played... each player is supposed to start with the light side upwards? We always started with the light side down.

Needing to get to the top of a temple before you can even think of screwing over your opponents would make an already subtle part of the game almost irrelevant.

Yeah, it was an action usually only taken maybe once per two games in my experience. This was actually my first time reading the rulebook, so I know who to blame for this :P.

Also posting signups for T'zolkin now.

No, actually. He tends to be pretty good on getting rules right. It's the guy I know who owns the game.

Discussion/question:

Would hydras cause more good or more harm to forum gaming?  A hydra is two people sharing a player position in the game, and both being fully empowered to make choices.

The drawback is that you have to share control of the game with someone else.  The possible upside I was wondering about, is how much it could increase the speed of games.  It seems like oftentimes the pace is pretty fast in general, but then one particular player is unable to move for an atypically long period of time, and things bog down when EVERYONE has to wait for me, sleeping off getting so sloshed with my friends that I played Market-Moneylender-BigMoney a participant with very pressing work related matters to attend to.
I'm wondering if maybe you'd get to participate to half the extent, but then games wouldn't go twice as fast, but rather five times as fast, due to the chokepoint effect.
Of course, the moderator could still be a chokepoint, but having a co-moderator could increase that consistency as well.

I find that a lot of times hydras don't like to commit to anything before first talking to their partner, so there might be hidden slowness there.  They do tend to keep discussion going longer though.

In this thread it was mentioned that Trajan can be played at Boite a Jeux. Both I and Qvist expressed interest in playing a game with other beginners. It doesn't really need a "host" as it just involves starting the game and inviting others, but is anyone else interested? It takes up to 4.

Mage Knight III is still in pre-game, and needs someone to replace me. So far the only choice that's been made is your hero.

One spot is still open for Agricola IV. We're playing with all three base decks (EIK), drafting our starting occupations and minor improvements, and playing tournament mode (certain cards selected by the BaJ community banned due to balance issues).

We need more games!
QVist was involved in pretty much everything as either a player or a mod.
I've offered to sub in for him in the couple games that seem like they might want to continue.

Now, I'm going to offer to mod something.
I think having more things to do here, actually helps me be more active.  It's a bit of a balancing act, because if I do too many things then they start to fall off, while if I do too few things they all start to suffer as well because I'm not as excited about coming around to see what's going on.

So, I'm going to go ahead and offer to mod whatever game people would like to play, that I can run.  I'll try to build up a list in the mean time.

I'm pretty curious about Agricola, is there a good resource for learning the game online/someone willing to help me learn? Or is the rulebook simple enough? I'm sure that at some point I'll be willing to sit down and wage through the rulebook, but probably not for an online game...

I'm open to run Acquire if people want. It works very well as a PBF, but I don't know if there is enough interest.

I would run or play Acquire.  Love that game.  But I don't have any sort of set-up/form to play Acquire with...I'd probably just setup my actual gameboard and take picutres of it...though that would probably get tedious fast.

Excel spreadsheet would work so perfectly for the board though. Deal out tiles, allow anyone to edit the spreadsheet, they play a tile onto the board, color code it to whatever hotel it joins with (if needed), buy stock, have the mod give them a new tile, rinse and repeat.

Both the mod and the players would have very little bookkeeping.

Agricola is actually pretty straightforward: You place a worker an do what the spot it's on says.

If anyone is interested, we could do a beginner's Agricola game, I know Twistedarcher also expressed an interest in learning how to play.

I'd be in for Acquire if that runs.

I'm up for running Eclipse if folks want to play it.
I'd be interested in running/playing an intro 18xx game (Note: I've never played myself), presumably 18AL.

Or maybe something like Imperial? Die Macher?
Note: I've never played those games either, but I'd like to play/run them to see how they go.

I'd be willing to run/play another Mage Knight game if there's interest again.

I'd be interested in running some other game that people want to play also.  We could do Small World, or we could do a light dice game, like Roll Through the Ages, or something in that vein.

So, any interest in any of those things?

Roll Through the Ages intrigues me. I'd be up for that.

Mostly, I'm up for a game that isn't reliant on using images. I'm pretty much good with text and Google Docs, which may be part of the reason why I couldn't get into Mage Knight so well but really enjoyed Tzolk'in, Terra Mystica, and Through the Ages. Even the D&D game I'm in is kind of pushing it.

What if I ran 18AL with something like this for the map? (Note: I'd still need to put in a good bit more work, but I was proof-of-concepting it)

I'm trying to ease my way back into this - see the "where we talk when it's night" thread for any "where ya been" queries - and am pretty confident with dipping my toe back in the waters with:

Interested to join any 7 Wonders game

Hmm, I think I once played an 18xx game at some point. I recall those tiles.

I may give it a shot, but I'd have to digest the rules first. I barely remember anything about the game.

Also, welcome back, Volt.

I have to say... playing 7W... twice? Three times? Now... I just don't have the mental energy to play it on the forums. It's essentially like playing all players at once, with slightly limited information - that is you can't control what others get in hands before your own. But it boils down to running the numbers on what you've seen, what's left, what each person has (after you, of course), and what the optimal play for all players on any given turn is.

I dunno. Just seems like a game that in many ways is broken by the addition of Excel (or good bookkeeping). I think I would enjoy it much more in person where tracking is a little more difficult.

It's like Dominion with a deck tracker / point tracker that's public to both sides. Couldyou do it face to face? Sure. But it's a lot less likely.

I prefer to play 7 Wonders IRL (if everyone has played before), but I like the game enough to play online. I agree it can be a lot more math-y since you're able to calculate the best possible card in your hand, but I don't really do that anyway. Just like I don't use the Dominion Extension. It ruins the fun of 'Ooooh did I pass that card along? Is there still a Cog in circulation?'. It may not be optimal, but it's still fun. So I'll probably /in to whatever the next 7W game is.

Also, did anyone hear that their is going to be another 7 Wonders expansion? I wonder what design space hasn't been explored yet.

7 wonders plays very differently with a small group of players.  Like 3 or 4.  If all you guys have had so far are 7- and 8-person games, and players like Galz are feeling a bit burned out on it, I'd suggest a 3- or 4-person game for a significantly altered experience.  The fact that the hands you see will come back to you opens up a new dimension to game strategy, among other things.

The ones I think are in the works are Armada and Babel. I heard Babel is some sort of community wonder (coop mechanic?) and I imagine Armada adds interaction with non-neighbours.

This.  I'm with Galz that I think it is better in person, but also the only game I played on here was a 7 player game, and I really didn't like it that much.  I much prefer 3-4.  It feels more like Dominion because there are different wonders in play (not always all 7) so sometimes you have to watch what you discard, sometimes you don't (I'm looking at you Halicarnosos).  When I played on here, I didn't do any bookeeping or tracking or anything.  I did what I do IRL, worry more about myself and what I have in my hand at that moment.  A little of looking to who I'm passing to, but that's as far as I looked.  Now this resulted in me getting crushed, but such is life.  I'd be interested in maybe playing a small 4 player game, but if we play 7, I'll opt out.  I also have never played with the expansions, and I have not heard many good things, so I'd prefer just base 7W...

Some people on BoardGameGeek denounce Leaders as making the game swingier.  I (1) disagree, and (2) don't care even if it's true - they add too much fun to the game.

That said, I can see someone not wanting to play Leaders/Cities if they're unfamiliar with them.  I enjoy playing with no expansions, either, or both of those expansions.

I also enjoy the Wonder Pack.  Great Wall!  Stonehenge!  Abu Simbel!  And everyone's favorite:  Manneken Pis.  Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like.

Leaders can be a bit confusing, but Cities is fairly straight forward.  Unfortunately several friends of mine did not like Cities the first (and so far only, I think) time we used it because they felt suffocated by the debt tokens.  I think the random shuffle ended up putting every debt card into the game, and Petra and Catan as well.  Next time I should remind them that they could always just take -VP.  When someone builds a debt card, just imagine that they built a card worth extra VP and it also gives everyone else a chance to earn a few VP by paying money.  Debt can feel harsher than it really is because of loss aversion.

I have the wonder pack but haven't gotten to try any of them yet.

The Great Wall is terrific fun.  The gimmick is that you don't have to build stages in order, so you can build whatever benefits you the most at the time.  The drawback is that none of the stages give you VP, so you have to leverage the advantages it offers to make best use of it.  A side has more raw power but demands more resources.  B side is tricksier in that regard and easier to build the whole thing.

Abu Simbel is a neat mechanic but also pretty straightforward.  It lets you "bury" one or two of your previously played Leaders.  A buried Leader no longer has its effect, but gives you VP equal to double its coin cost.  Great for Leaders that give some benefit over the course of the game (like Bilkis or Archimedes) but no VP on their own; bury them at the end for beaucoup points.

Stonehenge is weird.  Each side has a stage that gives you VP (and, on the B side, coin) for every Stone you have on brown cards.  But Stone doesn't help you build any of the wonder stages.  So it feels like you need EVERYTHING - and if you get Stone-screwed it can feel pointless to build the wonder.  Stonehenge A in particular is very similar to Gizah (just raw VP with the Stone gimmick).  Stonehenge B has a neat last stage which is basically "make your own Guild" - you get 1 VP for every card your neighbors built, of the color you use to build the wonder stage.  But overall the wonder is funky and my fellow players dislike it.  I like a challenge, so I enjoy it; I've had good results pursuing a resource-heavy strategy (not just Stone, but everything on brown) to get monopolies and force everyone to buy from me.

Finally, Manneken Pis.  The A side copies your neighbors' wonder stages.  The B side is just one stage, that costs one of everything to build, but coughs up 7 VP, $7, and a shield.  I don't get to play it much because my players enjoy using it too much.  :)

I prefer Cities to Leaders because the Leaders really mix up the balance of the game. Some people like to have swingy games, and I do too, but not in 7 Wonders. But I'll play with them anyway. I like cities because of the universal effect of the debt cards. Diplomacy is also fun and the masks are interesting.

I've only tried the basic wonders. I have drooled over the ones from the Wonder Pack, however. Especially the Great Wall. Very versatile!

That would explain it :P I probably heard it from BGG.  I suppose I would be willing to try a game with 1 of the expansions (2 might be too much to learn PBF, ar at least at first).  But really, who am I kidding, I don't want to get into another game that makes me spend too much money...

I would be willing to host a game of 7 Wonders for fewer players, and perhaps make some form of card tracking spreadsheet for players to use to hopefully make card tracking easier (I'd have to see if my time allowed that). Most likely 3-4 players? Maybe even two games, it's not too hard to mod once the game is in swing after all.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

I've been a member here at f.DS for several months now, and for some reason ignored the games forum because I thought they were all of them just some variant of Werewolf...Shoulda checked the non-mafia section at least once by now.

But, I have now corrected that mistake and here I am!  It is so cool that this is here. I was going to set up for some friends of mine a few PbP games, even got as far as setting up a forum to do it on, and then it died from lack of interest.  So I went looking for a place to join of the games I was going to mod.  I wound up here, too cool.

Ok, enough with the hyperbole.  I would like to play a game.  I have several here at the house, but came specifically looking for Battlestar Galactica. <===this is currently my first choice

I would also like to play Twilight Imperium 3, if someone figured out a way to mod it.
I'm also up for The Resistance, Long Live the King, and Settlers of Catan (again, assuming someone could Mod them).

Actually, I would be up for anything, but I don't own most games, so I would need access to rules before I comitted (which is easy, since most places post pdf's of their rulebooks as a way to lure in fence-sitters)

So I got the Village for christmas, and while I have played 3 or 4 games of it, I don't really know what I'm doing and haven't won yet :P  Anyways, it's not terribly complex, there is not much hidden information.  In fact, there really isn't any.  So I'm thinking it could be easily done in a PBF format, and I think the moderator could even play, assuming you guys would trust that they would put the cubes on the spaces using a RNG and was truthful about it.  Anyone interested in playing it?  Looking for 3-4 people.

If you like board games and don't mind playing a game that lasts for several weeks, then yes you should play them :)

We discussed a similar question in this thread
http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=10171.msg332808#msg332808

Generally any game could be a realized as a forum game (edge case: Space Alert), so if you have a game that you would like to play, suggest it, perhaps you can find someone to moderate it. What works better are games that don't require a lot of interaction during other players turn.

More specific questions/musings;

Are these more or less time consuming(per day)?
What are some of the most popular?
I like mafia, I like games like civ and diplomacy and d&d.
Are there threads I should read to get aquainted?
Am I posting in the right place to sign up?

Less time-consuming.
Most popular by games run seem to be 7 Wonders and Resistance.  Through the Ages and Terra Mystica are popular, but moved off-site.

They're pretty straightforward playing, so I don't think there's really a need to acquaint yourself with them.

This is usually the thread where we organize games, sign-ups/confirmations happen in the thread for the game.  Sometimes someone posts a game without suggesting it here first, in which case you can watch for sign-up posts in the Forum Games area.

Per day, usually less than 5 minutes per game.
Nothing is really most popular, lots of one-off games, though quite a few 2 player games of Tash Kalar.
No real threads you need to read, though maybe look at some of the game threads; and for signing up, just watch for sign up threads.

Note that there has been a slowdown in games recently; I'm not entirely certain why.

Check out the tta thread in the other board games section.

If you're comfortable with the game, using the interface at boardgaming-online.com should be no problem at all.

I love coup, play it all the time IRL. I've thought about it as a forum game before but I don't see how it could work well unless everyone was on at the same time and played an entire game in one sitting. How much time will you give to people to react to actions?

Coup's been played here before:
http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=8713.0
It looks like the consensus was that it's still difficult in PBF since every time you claim a role you have to wait for everyone else to have the chance to call bull.

Yeah, this is the reason. There are so many opportunities for people to call others out and you need an adequate window of time for everyone to have a chance. It seems like it'd take so long to get anything done.

Love letter and Coup never really seemed like good forum game fits to me. They're too light and interactive - each player's decisions on each turn are too small and rapid paced for the amount of depth the game offers. Coup is especially bad, since you need to often be around to do things or not on just about every other player's turn, meaning to go around the table once everyone needs to check in 4-5 times. Love Letter is just not deep enough of a game to work that well.

Bang I've not played. I've played Samurai Showdown, which I believe is based on the game, and that seemed like it'd work fine. There's a few small issues in things like you'll often be drawing cards on your turn, and need to wait for players to react to your actions, although I don't know if either of those are issues in the original (Bang) game.

Years ago, I played a lot of Bang.  More recently, I've played a lot of San Guo Sha, which started off as a Chinese re-themed rip-off of Bang but has since taken on a life of its own.  Still very similar though.

I don't think Bang would work well as a forum game.  It has a deck from which cards are drawn and its also highly interactive.  The former means that a lot more moderation is needed.  The latter means that there is a lot of down time if players aren't online at the same time.  You'd have to wait after every Bang! to see if the target player has a Missed!  It might work, but I think it would drag far too long.

So I just got Canterbury for my birthday and I played it for the first time last night and really enjoyed it.  I was thinking this game would work perfectly in a play-by-spreadsheet format.  I'd like to make the spreadsheet, but it could be a while before I get around to having the time.  Anyone interested in playing?  Should I even start thinking about making a sheet?

I've spent the last week designing a board game and creating a playable prototype. I just played it for the first time tonight and our group loved it! This is the first game design that I've been excited enough about to take this far in the design process. I'm just so happy right now because everyone genuinely loved it (and made excellent suggestions for improvement) and there is like no better validation than someone enjoying something you created. :) :) :)

By the way, the game is called Apprentice and I'm hoping to run it as a forum game after I get a bit more playtesting in. Hopefully within a couple weeks!

Can you say what kind of game it is?

Sure, it's a resource collection game in which the actions you can take are determined by a moving/blocking game on a grid of building tiles.

The actions you can take grow stronger-and more expensive-the more times you use a certain building. It makes for very simple decisions at the start but very tough ones towards the end. And the options you have at the end are heavily influenced by the ones you take at the start. Overall I was thrilled by how well the game "worked" the first time.

I've playtested this a bit more and I want to open it up to playing/testing by forumers. I put together a spreadsheet so it's ready to play! I think I'll write an introductory post and open it up today.

I'm modding a game: Forum Survivor Season 2 We're hoping to start as soon as tomorrow (Wednesday September 24, 2014) and we need at least one more person to join to make the game happen.

If you're at all into forum games I'd highly recommend at least checking it out, even if you aren't a fan of the show Survivor (many people participating have never seen an episode  of the show and don't really know what they're getting themselves into, which is totally fine! I don't really think it's a significant disadvantage.)

More details about the game are in the OP of the thread. Come join us!

I could write my own ad for the game here, but Adam said pretty much everything I want to say about it in the post right above this
