FDS March Madness

Not sure how many people do March Madness on here, but I was filling out my multiple brackets and figured it might be fun to have a forum-based group. Feel free to join, obviously the more the merrier. No sports knowledge actually needed - if it was I'd certainly do a lot better on these things. And this isn't for money, just bragging rights.

The link below should take you there. Password is "dominion" if needed. You'll need a CBS Sports login to do it. Bracket name is FDS March Madness. Deadline for submission is Thursday, March 21st at 11 AM EDT.

http://forumds.mayhem.cbssports.com/e?ttag=13_cbsinv

Please let me know if you have trouble accessing and you'd like to join.

Good luck!

Pretty much the last call here - games tip off in about 2.5 hours, but I believe brackets lock in less than 90 minutes.

Did anyone else not know what sport it was until I had to look it up for the Tie breaker?

I'm seeing your name listed under the "players" section, so hopefully it went through. I can see what you mean about the site though. It's been fast in years past so I hope it's not slow throughout the tourney.

Anyway, 7 people isn't too shabby considering the late notice. Best of luck to everyone. I am not especially confident in my picks this year!

My picks are going to be awful. Apparently when your team is banned from postseason play for academic violations, your overall interest in the sport drops considerably for the whole season.

im not a fan of the scoring system where the points double each round. you get 32 points if you pick the winner correctly, buy you also get 32 points if you pick all the first round games correct, which is much harder. [not complaining, still looking forward to competing against you guys in the MM brackets! :) ]

Yeah, I like the extra weighting and that was the default, but that might actually be a bit too much. Maybe I should've changed it to like 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. I didn't really think much of it at the time, but that could make things interesting at the end!

Actually by picking the champ you get 63 points, since you picked them every round. So that's 1/3 of the possible points just by picking the champ. I've played 1-2-4-8-12-16, and that seemed a little better.

my math department is playing with
1-1-2-4-8-16.  So you get a cumulative 2 points for each 2nd round pick, cumulative 4 for each 3rd, etc.  I still prefer a more linear system like HME's.

I've also played a system where I get bonus points for a team's seed after the 2nd round.  This gives some more chances to players who picked the correct upsets, and not a "can't win without picking the winner" situation.

Current Standings After First Weekend

1. Ozle - 44 points
2. zporiri -42 points
3. HME - 41 points
4. shraeye - 40 points
5. D Bo - 38 points
6. Cuzz - 37 points
6. Tdog - 37 points

Interestingly enough, Tdog has the most possible points left, with his entire Final Four remaining. I'm sure we're in for some great games this coming week too, but what a crazy first weekend!

I think he has it won almost no matter what. His bracket is now strictly better than everyone's but Ozle's, since no one can get any points other than Louisville, which he has. The only way to lose is if Louisville loses to Wichita State AND the final has at least 177 points, which seems unreasonable.

And the official congratulations goes to shraeye for pulling out the victory thanks to Louisville's win last night.

Final Standings
1. shraeye - 112
2. Tdog - 105
3. D Bo - 98
4. Ozle - 64
5. HME - 53
6. zporiri - 50
7. Cuzz - 49

Thanks for playing everyone. It's pretty clear that the super-weighted scoring for the end rounds made this look further apart from 1-7, but really we all were pretty awful with our picks this year and it was pretty close for the most part. Now I know going forward to fix that scoring!

I think 1-2-4-8-16-32 would work well for the future.
