Mandarin and spoils?

When you buy a Mandarin using spoils, are the spoils cards considered "in play" so they get returned to your deck?

Also, if the answer is no, then does spoils not get counted for Bank either?

I think it's no, when you play a card that is trashed (I would've said one-shot, but that includes spoils too) it doesn't count as being "in play."

You return Spoils immediately when you play it, so it's impossible to return it from play with Mandarin and it won't add to Bank, HoP, etc.'s value.

The answer for both is, I believe, no.  Spoils leaves play when returned to its pile, and is therefore not "in play" when Mandarin is bought or Bank is played.  Or HOP for that matter.

Thanks!

We played Mandarin/spoils assuming no, but im pretty sure in the past we counted spoils for bank (I'll write that off as the reason my wife won! :p )

In fact, Spoils aren't even in play long enough to be trashed by Counterfeit, although you still get the $3 twice.

Although to state the obvious, you can still trash by most other means in order to make your Foragers happy.

No, trashed Spoils go back to the Spoils pile, not the trash, so they can't help Foragers.

Pretty sure that if you trash a Spoils, it goes into the trash.

No they don't.  If you trash Spoils, they stay trashed.  Spoils are only returned to the Spoils pile on play.  That means Spoils can't be trashed by Counterfeit (they get returned first) but you could still trash Spoils from your hand with Forager.

That makes sense. Clarified.
