What's missing again?

Hamlet
Horse Traders
City

If I reckoned correctly, just one other card fits the pattern.

Thought at
might want you take a curse voluntarily to improve your next hand, but that would fit for too many cards

I initially thought: cards with horses on them (art), but that too would fit too many (Trusty Steed, Princess being obvious ones)

I'm going to modify the above guess a little bit and say ambassador and masquerade as all of these cards are conceivably reasons you would take a curse when an opponent plays a torturer, but this can't be the whole story.

If the category is cards you could have in hand that could cause taking a Curse from Torturer, to improve your hand, then I would not include Ambassador.  Giving your opponent a curse is good, but it hurts them as opposed to helping you.  Masquerade still fits since you have to pass something, and the rest of your cards could be good.

If that is the correct category, then Hunting Party is at least an honorable mention.  Taking the curse would allow it to skip over curses already in your deck.

You would also have to include Bishop/Salvager/Island (if you don't want to trash cards from your hand but need the bonus), Secret Chamber, Vault, Tactician (if you discarded 4 cards before), Forge (if you want to get the OscarTheGrouch-Achievement) and probably some more.

Great thoughts here, but nothing even close to what I had in mind.

Very Small Hint: The connection has to do with how the cards behave, rather than how they look.
Still Small But Less Small Hint: No strategic analysis required to find the connection -- it's just about behavior.
Larger Hint: Horse Traders, while fitting within the group as I've defined it, is clearly the odd one out of the four and might easily be excluded with a slight alteration to the category.

Guess:

Conspirator?

OK, reading the larger hint it's probably wrong. Or at least not what I was thinking...

Without reading DStu's guess or the hints (well, I read the Very Small Hint), my guess is Tactician.

...Reading the larger hint makes me think I'm probably right.

Pawn?

I have a possible connection but it's tenuous...

ftl has the right answer.  But what was your reason?

ftl has the right answer.  But what was your reason?

What I was thinking was those are cards that may either give +buy or not give +buy. Hamlet you can choose +buy for discard. City gives +buy at level 3. Horse traders... well, I guess it doesn't give +buy if you 'play' it as a reaction? It's iffy and I don't like it, which is why I'm still not quite confident in this. With Pawn you can straightforwardly choose whether you want +buy or not.

Yes, that's what I was going for.  In a nutshell, cards that can give +Buy when used but do not always give +Buy when used.  Every other card either always gives +Buy when used or never does.  With Hamlet and Pawn, it's up to the player whether he gets the +Buy; with City, it's dependent on the state of the game.  As you say, Horse Traders is different, as I said in my hint above.  It gives +Buy when played, but not when revealed.  You could easily reword the connection to exclude it by saying "can give +Buy when played but do not always give +Buy when played."

Okay, so I had the right idea with Tactician also, in that it doesn't give you +buy the next turn if you don't have a card to discard with it. But I missed Pawn, which is more obviously right. Good job, ftl!
