The problem with cards like this is that they're useless on boards without +buys. Like, not Thief useless, but like literally "will never do anything for you that Copper couldn't do better" useless.

Agreed. I don't think a card with -1 Buy is doable.

I think any card with a -Buy has to have at least one of the following:

-A way around buying, eg Remodel/Workshop-type, VP tokens etc.
-Another option that provides +Buys. Maybe something like Choose 1: +$3, -1 Buy or +$1, +2 Buys. It'd probably have to be non-terminal too.
-A duration effect. Give up on your buy this turn to have a mega-turn next turn.

Maybe there are more things you can add to this list, but you get the point.
I think the problem is, in some games -1 Buy will be huge, but in some it will be almost meaningless, so it'd be super hard (maybe impossible) to balance a card like this in general.

Depends on if the -1$ is meant to have a "but not less than 0" clause. It really needs one, because the idea of having negative money causes issues I think (can you buy a Copper after playing one of these?)

But if you did intend it to be limited to 0, then this is only barely less good than Laboratory, because you simply play them all before you play any money-giving cards. And that's way too good for $4.

If you are intending it to let you go negative, it's probably not worth it because you generally wouldn't want to play more than 1 or 2 of these, and what makes Laboratory good in the first place is the ability to play lots of them.

My Foyer card has +2 cards, +2 actions, -$1 in a way. Discarding treasure cards (especially if you have to discard anyway if you don't have any) is similar to -$.

Foyer
$4 Action
+2 Cards
+2 Actions
+$1
Discard 3 cards or 1 silver.

So, 1 nets you $3, 2 nets you $4, 3 nets you $3, 4 nets you $0, and 5 nets you... $-5.  Ouch.

Could you update the original post with your older card for the record?

It seems interesting as a Rats-esque card. If you cannot get rid of them, they only seem worth getting with Trash-for-benefit (including upgrade effects), extremely thin decks, and sifting like Warehouse. That seems like a reasonable assortment of cards. I don't see anything about it stopping it from costing $3.

If you have no virtual money though, and you play your Greeds first
1 Greed: $3
2 or More Greeds: $4

But it does eat into your virtual money.
I'd consider making it $5 though.

Ok so the original idea was to do a card with "-buy" and the first version of it was just a brainfart like this: -1 buy, +3$, worth 0$. I like simple cards :) At some point I thought about a cheaper lab with -1 buy. Guess -buy is just too hard to balance.
