Question for New Yorkers (or anybody with knowledge)
« on: January 07, 2013, 08:58:01 am »

Is Jan/Feb a good time to visit New York?

Am looking at a weekend break with some friends and its a toss up between New York or Dublin (depending on how much I can convince them they can afford!)

But if its going to miserably cold and raining then I might hold off till a bit of a better time.

It's very cold (if you're used to London, like I am). April's a great time to be there. Similarly September/October.

But if you go, go to Otto - at 5th Avenue and 8th Street.

During the fall/winter, if you're going to Manhattan, it gets very windy, because the wind gets funneled between the skyscrapers.

It's going to be cold.  I don't know about "miserably cold", that depends on your tolerance.  Right now we have temperatures in the 40's.  A warm day would be 50's, a cold day would be 30's.  Pretty dry.

FWIW I prefer this to the summer, when it can get muggy.

30's to 50's isnt really a problem for people living in London in January!

Athough, I think we are going to put it off and go to Barcelona instead

Due to Wind Chill and other factors, it feels significantly colder on average in December-February in NYC then it does in London.

YMMV

Odd, I thought London was colder than NYC.  It is a lot sunnier in NYC.

I'm considering a trip to Barcelona myself this spring, actually.  If anyone has advice on Spain I'd love to hear it.

Well, it's been unseasonably mild at the moment, got a cold snapcoming that will take it down to 30's and below by the weekend.

I have been to Barcalona before, but I was rather young.
Although I get the impression you cannot really do the wrong thing there, its all pretty obvious

I want to see a FC Barcelona match.  Get a chance to see Messi in his prime.

Of course NYC is definitely hotter than London in the summer. I'm thinking of going to Barcelona in the summer to see Kraftwerk and Pet Shop Boys at the Sonar 2013 festival.

Syracuse hasn't seen too much snow yet, but I hear the skiing is still great. Definitely warm enough for good hiking, and the lakes should freeze around then. Plus, you could hop over to the Falls or Toronto, visit Snakes & Lattes and...

Oh sorry, did you mean The City? Fine. Carry on.

But don't you dare suggest you'll be heading 'upstate' if you stay south of Albany!

Awesome. I've been there thrice in the last 5 years or so. It's a really great city. Too much of my time there was spent in conferences, but definitely go to Sagrada familia and Parc Guell, and gorge yourself on some paella.

That's not fair. Anything north of Dutchess County is upstate.
