What an emotional rollercoaster of a night its been for me!
Background to the FA CupFirst, a little background for those of you that don't really know the F.A Cup. It's one of the oldest sporting competitions in world (Dating back to 1871) and is fairly special in that pretty much every team in the football pyramid enters it, from the Premier League Champions right down 10 divisions (Which are split into separate regions each of course), to local village amatuer teams, there was even a YMCA team in it this year.
Basically down to level 11
On this chartNow obviously the lower teams have to play a LOT more qualifying games to get through to the big stages, and the teams in the top 2 divisions (Premiership and Championship) don't join in until the 9th matches. This is whats called the Third Round (the others being qualifying matches and preliminarys)
This means, feasibly that any team can eventually meet any team, and while in practice it rarely happens because of the staggered entry, the numbers involved means it does sometimes!
Pretty much every football playing schoolboy in England dreams of winning the FA Cup at Wembley....and the beauty of it is, he technically still can. he doesn't HAVE to play for Manchester United or Chelsea to have that chance! There is also the chance that they could reach the magical third round and play against some of thier sporting idols, remember a lot of these players are part time or amatuer.
If you get to the third round you have just as much chance of getting to play Liverpool at Anfeild as anyone else, and ok, you more than likely wont beat them, but could you imagine a local boy who grew up watching the Yankees play sitting there knowing with the draw of a ball he could be leading his team out at Yankee Stadium in a COMPETITIVE Game. And lets not forget, there is a 50% chance that that games not played at Yankee Stadium, but at his home club with only 4000 raucus home fans in attendance....
Ok, now I have waxed romantically over the theoretical possibilities, lets get on with the purpose of this thread.
The town where I spent my formative years, Hastings were playing in the second round of the FA cup today, in a replay against a team 1 division higher than them. Not the most glamorous of ties I will grant you, but Hastings have never been past the first round before, and quite frankly, the place is a shit hole that has very little going for it.
And whats more important, there is a place in the third round at stake. Now because this is a replay, the draw for the next round has already taken place! And the winners face a trip all the way up country to play Middlesborough. Now for non-uk football fans, Middlesborough are currently in the Championship (2nd highest tier) and are probably going to get promoted this year. They have only recently been demoted out of it, and have only a few short years ago been in the Europa League Final and played host to some of the best talents football has to offer!
