Because I was first player and it was pretty much a mirror strategy, or so I thought, and I got crushed.

opening: Smithy / Tunnel

This is not a good opening on this board.

Or on any board. Yes, I'm challenging people to find an edge case.

...but I want to be ahead in the "get tunnels and then discard them" race, and I want to pick up my terminal draw right away while I still have a good opportunity. I'm planning on Warehouses and Cellars to discard the Tunnels, and those decrease hand size.

Warehouse/Smithy, then.  That (or Cellar) also helps cycle your first couple of Tunnel pickups into your deck so you can start discarding them.  Still, FV is so much more powerful that you can't ignore it early.

You can't discard Tunnel with either of your opening buys, so why are you opening with Tunnel?

Tunnel/Warehouse has merit here I think, or Smithy/FV. But not Smithy/Tunnel, no.
