Gutnis looks around the tavern. Bunch of slack jawed claim jumpers here, he worried leaving his claim was the wrong choice the gold there was a sure thing, the gold in the Gauntlet was just a rumour he'd heard from the Bill down the road, but times had been hard lately, it had been tough to provide for Anne his wife, and their son Joe. The militia had been taking his gold because he hadn't been pulling enough gold from his claim to pay taxes and buy food. Times weren't always this tough, he recalled even only a year ago when he had enough gold to feed his family and the 2 neighbouring families with leftover! Why he did that he wasn't sure because now the neighbours weren't returning the favour.
Gutnis knew he was going to die in this Gauntlet, he only hoped that before he did he would pick up enough gold for Anne and Joe. He regretted not putting more into the note he left Anne when he snuck out, he knew had he told her she would have protested and said they were fine, but the woman was wasting away and the boy was growingly weak when it came to lifting things. He overheard a group that was also going to the gauntlet, but the fools were only accepting people with boasts.
He spoke up better with a group then on his own right? "I, Gutnis can beat the lot of you with one arm tied behind my back, WHILE hopping on one foot!" he exclaimed, and like that the group accepted him.
