i started this one torn between apothecaries and alchemists and decided to go apothecary first and transition in. my shuffle luck was perfect and it wound up awesome. is this typical?

Its typical in the sense that Apothecary is amazing. I would have potentially picked up some cellars rather than xroads after the first, but thats just because I find Apoth + Cellar to be surprisingly strong.

Good play! I'd say that baron for the extra buy was an important piece of the puzzle. I'd also normally take an extra potion. 2 buys + 2 potions = a better chance of the alchemist chain coming together with sufficient tempo to be dominant, and apothecary is just a nice bonus on that
