I just started playing Letterpress for iOS, which is pretty incredible.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/letterpress-word-game/id526619424?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

Just so.  Did some of the programming on it.

I highly recommend all of these games. But, in order of importance, I would say:

1. Trainyard
Extremely addictive puzzle game. the difficulty raises from very easy to absurdly difficult at the later stages, and there's unlimited replayability because the online database has millions of user-made maps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWtIb7NEYgM

2. Battleheart
Worth at least one play through; Several more if you love gearing up and levelling up different parties.

3. Where's my Water?
Very fun and addictive. It can be challenging at times, especially the achievements, but overall not too hard. They're always adding new levels too.

4. Geodefense
This tower defense game rocks, as does its sequel GD: Swarm. Unfortunately there's some Openfeint crap that the game nags you about trying to sign you up for. Just make sure you turn off hardcore mode on your first play through.

5. Cut the Rope
This one's almost exactly like where's my water in terms of layout. Very quick and significantly easier than the above puzzle games.

6. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
This is a port of the nintendo game. The characters are great and the crime solving puzzles are pretty challenging. However, the dialogue takes a significant amount of time (as it probably should because you have to remember what people say), the game is quite long, and occasionally you will get stuck if you miss something important. It's absolutely worth it if you have the time, and a trilogy package of this game and the next 2 sequels is supposed to be coming out in a few months.

Released today, there's a free lite version and the paid version is only a dollar for just today.  All the reviewers compare it to Star Fox.

Side Note: loved Cut the Rope.  I haven't tried any of the others you mentioned but I'll check them out if they're on Android.

First world problems: I have too many things on my phone/Kindle designed to take up idle time, and too short a commute / too long a workday to enjoy them all.

For Android, Word Hero is a pretty neat game.  It is basically Boggle, but the hook is that games are played simultaneously with hundreds of other players in the world.  You can't just start a new game any time -- you have to wait up to 2 minutes for the next game to start or jump into the one that is on-going, and after each game you get to see how you rank among all the other players.

I think it's iOS specific, but I like Outwitters.

Has anyone else heard of it/played it?

I cannot recommend Hero Academy highly enough. It is easily my favorite iOS game and probably one of my favorite video games of all time. Rarely has a day gone by since its launch that I haven't played it.

The iOS version is free to download and comes with one team (of five, soon to be six). The Steam version is $5 and comes with two teams (including a team based on Team Fortress 2!) (yes, it's Valve-approved, that's how good this game is).

Hit me up in game (I'm stevezissou) and I'll show you the ropes.

I am really enjoying PunchQuest. It's free, and it is summarised pretty well in the title of the game. Fun enough to download and play, nothing to be too serious about.

In addition, Brainss is a nice variant for an RTS. You get to control zombies!

I'll definitely hit you up!  I also love Hero Academy, though I've never played via iOS, only Steam on my PC.

I see mostly iOs games listed here. I don't game often on my phone but I can recommend Great Big War Game for iOS or Android which has a great campaign mode and then endless online multiplayer RTS.

To remedy this...

The current Humble Bundle is for Android (also Windows, OS X and Linux).  I have heard good things about Machinarium and the other games look good too.  I have never actually purchased a Humble Bundle so I don't know how it will work out, but I plan to try it out later today.

If you've never heard of Humble Bundle, it is a really cool project.  I found out about it shortly after the previous Android Bundle offering was over.  That was sad. :P

I have downloaded it, and I am loving it! This really is a great game. If you like TBS and boardgames, you are likely to enjoy this a lot. I am playing under the username weni2009 (thanks for being nice in the chat, limpy aka. stevezissou), I am still figuring things out, but if you're looking for an opponent who is less than a complete stranger, invite me to a match! I will say beforehand that my time is quite limited (and I'm playing on a wifi-only ipad, so I have to be at home, not doing laundry, cleaning, cooking, eating, quality time with the wife, etc.), so I'll usually make just a few moves, and then take a day or so to make the next move, but that's the nice thing of asynchronous play!

Now I just have to decide which team purchase in order just to get rid of the mildly annoying ads...:)

I just got an iDevice for the first time ever; what games are like, must haves? I'm sure there's games that have been out for years now I've never heard of that everyone assumes everyone's already played.

Except Angry Birds. I've played that.

If it makes you feel any better, I downloaded the Lite version of ARC squadron.

I promptly died about 4 enemies in.
