4 player with 16 Provinces?

Has anyone done this?

It seems like it would be natural:
2p- 8 provinces
3p- 12 provinces
4p-  ???

One of the issues with 4p is that engines are a lot harder to build since the games go so much faster. That could be fixed by player 5p rules with 4 players:

- 16 provinces / colonies
- 4 piles for game ending

Given the amount of testing Dominion went through I'll bet there is a reason this won't work, but I can't come up with it.

Also:
What if you did the same for all vp cards? 16 of each instead of 12? Would it break anything? Or is it just a function of not wanting to print 4 extra copies of all vp cards? (ie logistical vs perfect game design?)

I never really got why 4p doesn't have 16 provinces either.

Piles do empty a lot faster in 4p (if everyone goes for a Village Smithy engine, you're getting 2/3 of each, and then that's 2 piles gone), so you would probably need 4-piling. But if everyone takes the same amount of turns in 4p as in 2p, then that game is going to be twice as long.

From Donald X:

"You could ask why 4 players don't get 16 Provinces. Well you know, the game takes longer (in minutes) with more players so it seemed reasonable to speed it up there."

Sounds like, then, if you're the hardcore sort that would play Axis & Allies or whatnot then you should play 16 VP cards.

You "should" play with however many you and your friends agree to play with.  There are other factors that show up with more players, of course.  There are fewer of each kingdom card available, and on average you'll get whacked with more attacks.  Those both seem like reasonable additional reasons to have fewer victory cards per player.

3 is my ideal number of players for real life Dominion.
4 can become quite a drag, especially in attack heavy games.

Imagine playing a 4p Ambassador tug of war, ugh.

I'm happy that he decided to let 4 play with 12 VP cards.

Too. Long. I'd be sitting there for two hours.

I'm pretty sure there's no numerical or game mechanics reason to use 12 instead of 16 for 4 players, but is just the matter of time - more players with more Provinces means a longer game. I would be interested to hear how it works with 16, if anyone wants to try and report back.

I believe there's still a game going on from last year.  ;D
