http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201209/29/game-20120929-232407-7a39a6fc.html

In which I use the ever-so-well-known mint-secret chamber-quarry-grand market combo to shoot ahead 5 grand markets by T9.

game of note mostly only because I've never really successfully opened mint-X before, where X was anything but fools gold.

Wow, what a lopsided 5/2 vs. 4/3 split!

According to our game chat, he was very ballsy to try the Mint/SC opening though! No, I don't know what that means either.

...in that it was no way clear before playing the game that mint/SC would actually pan out.

Also, you should have focused on some things other than caravans if you wanted to compete in the Grand Market rush. It was not actually solely the 5-2 opening which gave me that split (as I miss out on the early quarry).  ;)

I agree :) Though nothing a 4/3 start can do is even remotely competitive in the GM rush on this board, either way.

"...in that it was no way clear before playing the game that mint/SC would actually pan out. "

I very much disagree :)

Edit: Here's the 8 first logs I got with a 5/2 start:

Game 4 is kinda bad, the others range from super sick to sick. A 5/2 opener on this board is insanely strong.

Game 8 was the best/luckiest one.

The secret chamber is very good at discarding cards for coins. Maybe caravan/secret chamber is the best 4/3 opening.

I haven't given it too much thought, but Secret Chamber seems really bad in the early game for a non-Mint (/non Quarry) deck. Surely something like a Woodcutter should be better to pick up, and then picking up SC on a spare buy in a few turns once you have a Quarry? I dunno, you might be right in that there will never be a good time to pick up SC, but.. well I dunno. Some more thoughts on this would be interesting.

I don't suspect that it would be good on 4/3 at all; you want it with Mint because there's no way to get the Quarry quickly otherwise, but you should have no trouble hitting $4 with Quarry/Woodcutter.

I guess that a Quarry + SC collision yielding a GM is kind of cool, though.

dondon, SC is still good in the 4/3 deck, because of the interaction you point out (SC+Quarry=GM), but it's not the insane powerhouse that it is in a 5/2 deck (giving $4 for the Quarry when you don't have the combo, and later, as you point out, giving the GM). I feel it's still something you want though, but the 4/3 deck just can't/won't work on anywhere near the same efficiency as the 5/2 deck.
