Deeply deeply unpleasant game (Potions run out)

I just finished a really really sloggy game. Ambassador + Apothecary + Outpost, with University and Ironworks to pick up mining villages. I made a number of mistakes (both missing a university play early and being too lazy to sculpt some outpost hands w/ apoth), but won estate tennis and then proceeded to dump an additional 15 potions into his deck. The worst part was that Apothecary and Mining Village are MISERABLE to cantrip with, but I can't think of a better exit strategy to end the game guaranteeing the win. Finally I grab a province and end it w/ potions piling.

When I looked at this I thought it would be some crazy Swindler game.

Hahaha thats pretty funny.

Yeah... With the swindler game at least only 2-3 potions remain in the deck, rather than 15.

I strongly suspect Amb/Amb would have been stronger openings for both of you.

I suspect Ironworks/silver would be a better opening.  Silk road gets loads of help from Ironworks and opponent's ambassadors.

For the game itself, you played it pretty well in terms of ending the game.  There's just no action card that you want to play over and over again in this engine.  No attack, no terminal + benefit, no mega-turn to work towards.  It really is just apothecaries.

Oh and potion/ambassador is a viable opening with apothecaries.  Especially when there is an important $5/6 to hit early.   The best being Goons, but Border village + a decent $5 would also fit the bill.

Yeah, I think on that board I'd probably go IW/SR and ignore most other things.

(ignoring ironworks/silk road) potion/ambassador is a much stronger opening than ambassador/ambassador with apothecary on the board.
