Which cards are the slowest?

Pirate Ship- I cannot tell you how many times people dip for Pirate Ships and by the time they are worth around $5 I have 5 Provinces. It excels in multiplayer, but mostly it is too slow. Also, the Pirate Ships can help the attacked player tremendously by trashing their coppers.
Alchemist- The deck that we measure how slow it is by comparing it to this.

Not sure quite what you mean. There's this:

Sea Hag    23.95 ± 0.02    25.94 ± 0.05
Familiar    23.89 ± 0.02    25.76 ± 0.06
Mountebank23.56 ± 0.02    25.64 ± 0.04
Goons    23.18 ± 0.02    24.37 ± 0.04
Colony    22.71 ± 0.01    22.71 ± 0.01
Platinum    22.71 ± 0.01    22.71 ± 0.01
Witch    22.69 ± 0.02    24.71 ± 0.05
Ghost Ship    22.07 ± 0.02    24.33 ± 0.05
Ambassador   22.05 ± 0.02    24.24 ± 0.05
Saboteur    22.02 ± 0.02    24.17 ± 0.05

which is the top 10 cards by average game length

Which card chains seem the slowest to set up?

Goons is probably the slowest to set up in my book - largely because most of the time, your opponent is doing the same thing, which means you're both playing 3-card hands in a deck with very little (if any) gold.

Well, going only for Pirate Ships is silly.  I always laugh when I buy a PS or two, and the other player(s) will buy Silver/Gold, or Treasure-generating cards like Bureaucrat, only to feed my coin mat.

Any card chain involving Potion cards are slow to set up; the earliest you can even have such a card in your hand is turn 5. They are also quite difficult to purchase with multiple buys without already having a strong engine.

This happened to me recently in one game, and was probably the only reason I won that game. There were no villages, so I could only play one Pirate Ship per turn. Plus I was the only one doing the pirating, so I didn't slow down my opponents' economies much. I generally view Pirate Ship as a strong card, but I have to change my view that it's always a powerful option xD (even if I usually play with more than 2 players).

@michaeljb, what?
Chancellor may not be a great card but it's for sure an accelerator rather than a slow card. The benefit is rather immeidate (your next hand). you are cycling things in quicker rather than slower. Not a slow card at all.

Ambassador (you are trashing in a slow way and attacking)/duke (you need a bunch of duchies before it's worthwhile, definitely leads to longer games)/goons (attack, care less about province/cursers in general (delayed benefit).
I don't think of treasury as that slow a card, in particular it's an early game accelerant, which, in general, make the game quicker not shorter. Sure it discourages greening for a bit but it's a quicker card than, say, market.

I'm pretty sure he's saying that Chancellor can let you get Potion cards in hand before Turn 5.

What might be interesting to consider is which cards slow the game in a satisfying way, and which cards slow the game in a frustrating way.  For example, getting your deck clogged with Curses can slow the game to a frustrating crawl as you struggle to do anything with your hand.  But building up a massive engine of many parts and drawing your entire deck every turn can definitely slow the game down, but it's quite fun to play and to watch.

Or, with quite a bit of luck, a Courtyard/Potion opening.

(Or opponent's Noble Brigand/Fortune Teller/Rabble/whatever)

Well I'm generally speaking of course; there will be exceptions haha. I guess a better wording is that you need two reshuffles to occur to hit a potion-cost card in your deck. (of course, there's exceptions to this too, such as Watchtower). The point is that they're slower to get into your deck than other cards ordinarily.

University is probably the slowest in terms of shuffles needed.

First shuffle to buy the potion..
Second shuffle to buy the University..
Third shuffle to get the action..
Fourth shuffle to use the action to help you get a VP card!

I have one word for you: Watchtower.  And while Universities may be slow to start, they quickly turn into engines of awesome.  Combine with trashing and a Scrying Pool, and you'll be shuffling every turn.

the fact that there exist particular other cards which make things not slow is an exception rather than the general case and doesn't invalidate the statements posted...

Most Dominion works like that. Cards have drawbacks, and there's usually other cards that negate those drawbacks if they happen to be in the same Kingdom.

Just played a game with University, Minion and Chapel.  That was fun :)
