Silk Road/Gardens without support vs. Provinces

Just played this game.

So Silk Roads and Gardens were on the board, but I looked around for support (Ironworks, Workshop, anything with +Buy) and there was little, only Pawn. Still I decided to go for them and used Courtyard as a support card to line up some buys with the little money I had.

Was I right to go with Silk Roads with so little support?

My opponent quickly got to 4 Provinces and started whittling down the Gardens which I needed.
I scrambled a win by buying out the Estates and my 7 Silk Roads were 4 VP each while my 3 Gardens were 3 VP.

Considering a board of Courtyard, Gardens, Mining Village, Pawn, Peddler, Potion, Silk Road, Steward, Trading Post, Transmute, and Watchtower what's your choice here? How would you go about Silk Roads and Gardens or would you focus on Provinces?

I think your opponent dipping into the Gardens was a mistake. If you had to piledrive Silk Roads and Gardens, that's a lot of 4-cost cards. Gardens wouldn't help your opponent because he's been trashing a lot. I think if your opponent had focused on Provinces and just pushing through the end of the game, you didn't have a way to end it quickly enough on piles.

Well, I thought he was dipping into Gardens because he felt he was ahead with his 4 Provinces (which he probably was at the time) and he wanted to help me end it. I don't mind his strategy. My VP curve is exponential, it "shoots up" at the end. If he can end the game before my curve crosses his linear curve, he's done well. He was too late in this game, but it could have worked.

Whether it would have been safer for him to focus on Provinces, I don't know....

— TheMaskedFox's turn 20 —
TheMaskedFox plays a Silver and a Gold.
TheMaskedFox buys an Estate.
(TheMaskedFox draws: a Silver, 3 Gardens, and a Province.)

Why didn't he buy a Dutchy there if he was behind? Would have stopped you buying 2 estates and a draw

point tracker not on I assume so he thought he was still ahead?

No VP tracker, so I guess that's what he thought.

I didn't know whether I was ahead or behind, but just took a chance with the last Estate.
