Bought lots of Ironworks thinking to go Duchy/Duke... bought too many and my opponent bought Worker's Village to the max. Both piles empty I end up emptying the estates with only one Duchy bought....

That's hilarious! As a tip, you don't need anywhere near that many ironworks for duchy/duke. One or two suffice; if your opponent is really really not going after them, and really, really slow, you might conceivably grab a third. But basically you never need 3 even, let alone 9....

Only if you've run out the silver or have less than $3. Unless you're playing Counting House and have extra buys.
