Weekly Design Contest #235: Polly Want a Cracker!
Now, I know we all appreciate originality over here, but forget all that! Let’s just parrot stuff Donald X. has done and call it our own!
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to design a card or landscape that only uses sentences found on official card-shaped things. For the purpose of this contest, sentences are broken up by periods and line breaks.
Any number of non-supply cards, artifacts, heirlooms, split piles, etc. are allowed, but they must follow the rules about parroting existing sentences.
Cards and landscape from Rising Sun and Plunder that fit the rules on release:
Pilgrim
Practice
Crucible
Longship

My judging criteria:
Keep it simple
Keep it focused
Keep it balanced
Keep it interactive
Keep it fun!

Happy designing.

Fun idea, but it seems like a weak card. I think it could have the benefit of a medium strength $4 Village variant, such as Town, and still not be strong.

Split Pile: Bounty / Vigilante

Quote
Bounty — ($4)(Treasure)

$2
You may trash this.
-
When you trash this, gain an Attack card.
Quote
Vigilante — ($5)(Action - Attack)

If there are any cards in the trash costing
from $3 to $6, gain one of them.

Return this to its pile. If you did, +2 Cards,
+$2, and each other player discards down
to 3 cards in hand.
Quote
Sources for non-vanilla bonus text:
Engineer & Squire
Quote
Sources for non-vanilla bonus text:
Rogue, Wish, & Mercenary

Here is a split pile made of a Bounty and someone who wants the bounty. When you put out the Bounty, you might lose it (trash it)—but if you do lose it, you might gain the temporary assistance of some hired help. Vigilante (whom I would have really liked to call ‘Bounty Hunter’ and almost called ‘Bounty Chaser’) will hunt down someone for you (from the trash), and he can also rough up some people for you, but he’s not sticking around. However, play your cards right and you can use Bounty to gain Vigilante and vice versa in perpetuity.

EDIT: Original entry was a bit OP, so removed Bounty’s +Buy & made Vigilante terminal. I think this is now balanced. You effectively spend $4 for a card that spends half its time as a Silver and half its time as a $5-cost. Also, there is a chance you don’t get to trash Bounty the first time you play it (if the Vigilantes are not yet uncovered).

This is too strong. It is basically a card that switches between two cards, like Vampire/Bat. The first is a non-terminal Woodcutter and the second is Lab plus Militia.

Obvious nerfs are increasing the entry price to $5 and/or making the Attack non-terminal.

Usurper
Night - $6
You may play an Action card from your hand three times
____
This is gained to your hand (instead of your discard pile)

Edit: No longer my entry

I take your point, this is likely too strong. I wanted to make it worthwhile even in kingdoms that have a trash-gainer like Rogue or Treasurer which could break this exchange-by-another-name loop, but those are just edge cases.

I really want to keep Bounty at $4, because otherwise I worry players will never get through the top half of the pile (same reason why Donald X made Gladiators to trash Supply Gladiators). But at the same time, for $4 you are getting a card that can turn itself into a $6, so maybe its price should be raised.

Either way, I should nerf Vigilante by making it terminal. Thanks for the feedback!

Which card did your phrase “When you gain this, you may trash a Treasure from your hand” come from? I can’t seem to find it.

Tunnel Map • $4 • Action  - Reaction
Look at the top 4 cards of your deck.
Put 2 into your hand and discard the rest.
-
When you discard this other than during Clean-up,
you may reveal it to gain a Gold.
:)
Seams like a Reaction recombination would be fairly easy, albeit maybe not a winner for this contest. So here is my entry, Mapmaker's top with Tunnel's bottom - i think it is the best of the three i made.

I’m not aware of such a card, though Ducat has this verbiage for “Copper”.

Separately, the card seems too strong for $3.

Yeah, it is an obvious $4. Opening Double Prospector could very well be a bonkers money strategy .

I'm more worried about the silver gaining part. What this mainly does is make BM+Prospector much stronger than it would otherwise be -- and it would otherwise be very strong. Drawing cards is good, the on-gain is good, the coffers are amazing, and the free silvers are also amazing (... if you're playing a big money strategy). That's a lot to put on one card. As is, I think BM+Prospector would buy 4 Provinces very quickly; I wouldn't be surprised if it's significantly faster than Rebuild.

100% right. The on-gain does not exist, so I replaced it with Ducat's on gain.

It also costs $4 now, meaning you (usually) can't open double Prospector, and you'd need $5 to utilize the on-gain effect.

If I have a card with a sentence I want to use that references its own name, is it allowed to replace the name with the name of the submitted card, or do the sentences have to be used verbatim?

Example: Cultist has the wording "You may play a Cultist from your hand" Can I replace "Cultist" with the name of the submitted card?

Elegant workaround: "You may play a Cultist from your hand, where "Cultist" means "[card name]".

<Prospector>
You can still put the "Gain a treasure costing up to $3 more" part since it's a separate sentence. Unless you removed it on purpose to make it slightly weaker ofc.

Horse Market
$4 - Action - Reaction.
+$1.
+1 Buy.
Gain a Horse.
Discard any number of cards for +$1 each.

When you discard this other than in clean-up, you may play it.

I feel like this might be strong for $4, but too weak for $5, so I might tweak it.

New entry:
Monk
$4 - Action
+3 Cards. +1 Buy. You may trash a Copper from your hand. Each other player may trash a card from their hand.

Notes: Smithy with a buy and trashing! But be careful, your opponent will often make better use of the trashing than you, especially early on.

Old entry: Galley
$6 - Action Duration
+3 Cards and +1 Buy
At the start of your next turn, +1 Action and $1.

Notes: Wharf should have cost $6, don’t make that your point of comparison.

If I happen to win, I can’t judge the next contest.
