Weekly Design Contest #229: A Simple Construction


The challenge for this weeks design contest is to design a card or card-shaped object that has a dividing line and uses no more than 20 words in the card text. Vanilla bonuses count for one word each, as well as coin or debt amounts, but not card names or costs. Contractions also only count as one word, as well as numbers except before a vanilla bonus.

You can submit up to two connected cards, and only one of them has to fit the criteria. No travellers or four-way split piles.

Examples of official cards that fit the criteria are:
Charlatan
Grand Market
Tunnel
Coin Of The Realm
Battlefield (and some other Landmarks)
Cemetary and Haunted Mirror (nice that both fit the criteria)
Flag Bearer and Flag
Way of the Mouse
Ronin
Approaching Army

I will be judging by elegance, clarity, balance and how fun it seems to play.

This started as an Action-Victory card, but I dropped the inherent VPs in favor of the setup text to ensure players have land available for restoration.

Edit: At segura’s recommendation, I have added a cantrip effect. This should make the card more appealing in a wider set of kingdoms.

Just remove the second dividing line and write the "When you discard this ..." under the 2 VP without an extra line. I don't think you ever want two lines on a card.

I envision this being in a Dark Ages sequel (like the one I am working on, Dominion: Plague), where Ruins abound and VPs can be a little tough to come by at times. Fully expect a card like this would be passed over in a Prosperity or Empires-style game. However, I take your point and made an adjustment. Thanks!

The only Dark Ages synergy is Rebuild and the decent trashing overall in Dark Ages. Otherwise: Shepherd, Groundskeeper and any engine that can can decently trash midturn and thus deal with the Estates and refuel Land Restoration.

Love this, but why does it need to be an Action? I guess there's a few interactions with Maroon/Courtier etc.

It's mainly there for flavor and I agree, it's certainly not necessary, though I did think including the Action type would help for some TfB cards like Maroon, Sacrifice, Rice Broker, etc.

I like very much that this leads to a far later triggering of the Prophecy than the official cards.
I think that it could use a buff though (e.g. Coffers instead of Coins or extra Buy on top).

Here is my entry - a deck inspector and reaction that can trigger an additional copy you have, at 20 "words". I found it interesting that no deck inspectors are also Reaction.

Clarification: The reaction type is solely to mark it as playable when sitting in the Trash. Playing it from the Trash isn't "gaining" but it does go to your discard pile when you discard it from play.

Setup: Use an extra Prophecy this game.

Clarifications:
  • Insurance causes games with 2 Prophecies instead of 1, regardless of how many other Omens are in the Kingdom. Each Prophecy starts the game with the normal number of Sun tokens. (Use Coin tokens if there aren't enough!)
  • +1 Sun means you remove a Sun token from any Prophecy which still has Sun tokens on it - you choose.
