Fan Mechanics Week 99: Cursed!
« on: August 18, 2024, 04:52:42 pm »

This week's challenge is design a card or Horizontal that makes use of a Cursed card. In practice, one Cursed card would be used in a game. The Curses would be the physical representative of the Cursed card and the rules regarding the curse pile size are still applicable.

Your submission should include the name of one of the below Cursed cards or also design a Cursed card and reference that.

:)
Below are some Cursed examples.

:)

My main judging criteria is whether I would be excited to see the design in a Kingdom. Important factors:
* balance: is it useful, but not overpowered (both in general and in a variety of Kingdoms)
* playability: it is fun to play and works with more than one type of deck
* simplicity: this doesn't always mean fewer words; a card with lots of text that, once you understand it, can be easily and intuitively be played is better than one with four lines of text that is difficult to understand
* topicality: designs something within the specifications presented

Have fun! I look forward to seeing your entries. You are welcome to submit up to two entries, just put each into its own separate post for clarity. Each entry should use no more than four card/Horizontals.
:)

Do these function differently to Charlatan?

This week's challenge is design a card or Horizontal that makes use of a Cursed card. The submission should include the name of one of the below Cursed cards or also design a Cursed card and reference that.

I'm a little unsure of how these work. I can see at least two apparent possibilities:

(1) This appears to be how the cards function as you've described them in the OP. There is separate pile of the Cursed cards that is gained by the landscape, in addition to the regular Curse pile (gained by regular Cursers). Those regular Curses function as the Cursed card (e.g. they are also Actions, and are able to be played as such). Both Curse and Cursed piles are Supply piles, counting towards a 3-pile ending, buyable during the buy phase, and gainable as regular cards (e.g. with Sunken Treasure). Is this what you intended? If so, how large is the separate (Cursed) pile?

(2) The idea for the Cursed card to just replace the regular Curses (while having regular cursers give the Cursed card instead). You would (presumably) just use the regular pile of Curses, and somehow just have the Cursed card on the table as a reminder. This is clearly not what the Cursed cards you put out there do, but (as Snorka mentioned in reference to Charlatan), it does seem simpler and more streamlined.

Sorry about the lack of clarity. I intend for one Cursed card to be used during a game and in the real-world use the existing Curse pile.

You'll find getting rid of them to be exhausting work.

Fae
$5 Action - Attack
+1 Buy
+$1 per different type in play
You may gain a Fae Spell. If you don’t, each other player gains a Fae Spell.

This could be too good. I considered not giving it the Attack type as the attack is fairly weak and potentially even beneficial.

A blockade variant that should do more to block your opponents' gains.

Quote
Dark Dealings • $1 • Event
Once per turn: +1 Buy. Gain a Fae Spell. +$1 per Fae Spell you have in play.

I decided to use one of your Cursed cards, Fae Spell. Dark Dealings costs $1, but can only be bought once per turn. It refunds the Buy spent on it, gains a Fae Spell, then (whether or not the gaining works) gives +$1 for each FS you have in play. Ultimately, it turns Fae Spells into a peddler variant, minus the first copy you play (although you need some other source of money, as if you only play FSs, you won't have anything to buy DD).

While these are all good submissions, there can be only one winner.

Winner: emtzalex's Dark Dealings
