When is the +Debt in Change calculated?

Imagine that I:
  • Buy a Rush
  • Buy a Launch
  • Play a Change
  • → Trash a Copper
  • → Gain a Bridge
  • → → Play the Bridge due to Rush
How much Debt do I then get? Is it 4 (because that was the difference in $ when I chose to gain Bridge) or 3 (because that's the difference now)?

I would think: Gaining the Bridge and getting the Debt are two separate instructions, separated by a period. So first, one is executed in its entirety, which includes the Rush trigger. This means you would gain 3 Debt.

But then what if (update: during your Buy phase) you trash a Silver to gain a Peddler at cost $4, then play it due to Rush so it now costs $2? The difference is now $1 in the other direction!

Had it explicitly said "the difference in $ between the costs of the two cards" then you would definitely be right, but could "the difference in $" by itself be read as an implicit reference to the previous line?

I tried these on dominion.games--looks like incurring the debt is the last thing to happen.

First one results in 3 debt and second one results in 1 debt (for that one, Peddler originally cost 4 since the Change was the second action in play):

First scenario:

W buys a Rush.
W gets +1 Buy.
W buys a Launch.
W gets +1 Action.
W gets +1 Buy.
W plays a Change.
W trashes a Copper.
W gains a Bridge.
W plays a Bridge.
W gets +1 Buy.
W gets +$1.
W takes 3 debt.

Second scenario:

W plays a Blessed Village.
W draws a Gold.
W gets +2 Actions.
W plays a Silver and 2 Golds. (+$8)
W buys a Rush.
W gets +1 Buy.
W buys Gamble.
W gets +1 Buy.
W reveals a Silver.
W plays a Silver. (+$2)
W buys Gamble.
W gets +1 Buy.
W reveals a Change.
W plays a Change.
W trashes a Silver.
W gains a Peddler.
W plays a Peddler.
W gets +1 Action.
W gets +$1.
W takes 1 debt.

The debt gain is the last sentence, so you do everything else first, then that. It only matters what the cost difference is then, not at any other time. So, 3 debt.

If the difference is in the unexpected direction, that's still the difference, and still the amount of debt you get.

To me, a difference in the unexpected direction would be a negative value. So, when you say "difference" here, do you mean the absolute difference, i.e. the absolute value of the difference?

It's the absolute value. That's just the usual result of trying to have a good simple phrasing, and then interpreting it. But whether it's good or simple, it's the absolute value.

I think it's the distinction between "difference" used mathematically, and "difference" used in common English. Dominion usually cares about the latter, so this rulings makes sense to me.

So this means you can Change a Wayfarer into anything (that costs more $ than it) without getting debt...
