Inheritance + Farmhands

Suppose my opponent has bought Inheritance and I have not. Now, suppose that during my opponent's turn I gain a Farmhands, perhaps via Barbarian. Given that my Estates are Action cards at this time, I choose to set aside one of my Estates with Farmhands' reaction

However, since I have not purchased Inheritance, when my turn begins, what happens with the Estate? It's no longer an Action card at that point, so it can't actually be played. So, does it work like Hasty with Territory, in that it just goes into play without doing anything?

On the wiki, the final item in rules clarifications says:
Quote
If your opponent has bought Inheritance but you haven't, your Estates still count as Actions on their turns, but if you somehow manage to play one it doesn't do anything.
I think your question sounds almost the same as that situation. You manage to play one because of Farmhands, but because you don't have Inheritance it doesn't do anything.

EDIT: I guess there is a difference which might matter: In the wiki rules clarification, the Estate is an Action when you play it, but in your situation it isn't an Action when you play it. But something clearly told you to play it...

You play the Estate, but nothing happens, as the Estate doesn't have any text say what happens when you play it.

This is analogous to the situation of the Clashes having the Patient trait, which is handled in the wiki entry for Territory:

Quote
If the Clashes are Hasty or Patient, then that may lead you to play Territory. This normally means nothing, but it will still trigger Adventures tokens (e.g. Pathfinding), count as a card you've played this turn (e.g. for Landing Party), and counts as a card in play (e.g. for Tools).

If you use Sheepdog + WotM + Vassal to play an Estate on an opponent's turn where the opponent has Inheritance and you don't, does the Estate do anything?

It does nothing, unless you choose to play that Estate itself using WotM.

If you don't use the Way, then the Estate's on-play text is: "Play the card with your Estate token, leaving it there.", which fails to do anything because there is no such card.
